I start to hate things when they get too metatextual. Or meta-artistic. Or whatever. Duchamp annoyed me.

One of things I like about art is the way it gets people to think. Even if the thoughts are negative, the people are still thinking. Thinking people are good.

Fair enough. I don't know if I prefer one over the other, though. High concepts can lead to different crafts or different ways of doing the same craft, and that's always cool.

Well, it's more that I resent the fact that in today's postmodern, irony-first way of thinking, simply producing a well-crafted piece isn't enough anymore. It's gotta have some amazing concept behind it that makes people re-evaluate their whole perspective on life. That's one of the reasons I switched majors from art in college.

I won't deny that. Still, there are plenty of people that prefer technical skill over idea.

I don't think anyone is. My friend just bought the volume 3 hardcover, which finishes up Vaughan's run, and I had to break it to him that the next story was kind of a let-down and the quality just hasn't been up to snuff.

Thanks for the preview post.

I'm not excited about this book like I used to be. :(

Me neither. What helps that is the slowness of the releases. It is essentially a bimonthly now.

I actually do get that Whedon is a fan, it comes off in his writing. But that alone doesn't exactly make him perfect on the story itself. Likely because he writes the characters as he personally recalls and prefers them, not as they should be written barring the ending of Vaughan's run. Aside for mentions of the past to acknowledge it, some of the characters, especially Chase, act like they did back in Vol. 1 under TSUNAMI.

While having the kids work with the Kingpin was nice, it is a continuity nightmare considering other books like DD or ASM, which depict Kingpin in jail or Europe, take your pick.

Aside for that, the time travel story has some charm. Ryan's no Alphona, but considering Ramos is next up, I'll cherish him.

In some ways I probably like this run better than some of you, although I probably compare it to ASTONISHING X-MEN, which in comparison is glacial in pace and much more generic fare. But with so many months between issues, I may stop caring.

The fact is that when Vaughan was on this was my #1 book. Now it won't make my top 5.

That statement pretty much puts it in context. I'll talk about how wrong Ryan is for this book, and how he doesn't draw young adults and how his style lacks energy, until I'm blue in the face (er...keyboard)...and then there's the fact that he's not Humberto Ramos.

You're right, Dread. I'll cherish him, too.

Cool.

And now I have 10,000.
