The Runaways Thread

I guess we won't know what happened between Victor and Nico until a later issue.

Anyone remember how Xavin referd to Victor as 'Nico's robot' in YA/Runaways #1? Seeing as this takes place after the current Runaways arc maybe this means something?

Possibly. Or it could just mean that Nico's the leader of the Runaways, so she's responsible for Vic.

It seemed rather obvious that Victor and Nico "spent the night together" and that it likely entailed sex. Stop being so uptight. ;) Teenagers have pre-marital sex. Welcome to the end of the 20th Century. I'm sure even as an android, he's "fully equipped" (at least as Data from ST:NG once said).

It's a shame that RUNAWAYS doesn't tie in well with the CW mini, but that is probably intentional as RUNAWAYS sells well in digest and the digest crowd likely has very limited knowledge of the MU and may be thrown by heavy continuity with a tie-in, especially one that will be months old by the time it's reprinted in digest. Marvel wants digest readers to sort of "think" they're reading a manga, and that means keeping RUNAWAYS a bit autonomous. On the other hand, non-digest, well connected readers at least have a team-up between Marvel's best two teams of new characters that by the first chapter looks to be entertaining.

Another awesome issue as always. Found it surprising that Nico and Victor have already knocked boots, at least that's what I'm guessing they did.

But I'm definitely interested in what Chase has in store. He snagged up Lotus, who seems to be the only one that didn't lose their mind after the incident.

When Molly asked the Leapfrog if Gert was in heaven, that was a pretty cute moment, heh.

Kind of miss Alphona on this issue, but the art wasn't bad. :O

I actually prefer Norton to Alphona. Usually the only artist to fill in for Alphona after some 7-9 issues or so was Miyazawa (who draws SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE and it's previous volumes), an artist who got a lot of flack for being too "manga" from RUNAWAYS fans but who I never minded. Still, I preferred Alphona to Miyazawa. But I got to like Norton from GRAVITY and he has a knack for drawing teenagers, superheroes, robots, etc. and have it all look good, without it ripping off manga; after the 90's, artists who draw in manga style sometimes ware thin. Not to knock Alphona, of course, as the co-creator of the RUNAWAYS and as a rare artist these days who can actually produce maybe 9-10 issues a year, on time. A good 3rd of Marvel's artists have to pull teeth to put out more than 7 issues a year.

As I stated in my review on the last page, I liked this issue. True, the core series doesn't tie into the CW mini very well, but so long as both are good reads I honestly don't care so much. Chase' solo quest has become the book's best subplot, although I do hope he doesn't become an "outright villian" and eventually returns to the team. Hopefully the fact that Victor can get the Leapfrog off the ground at all isn't a sign of Chase being replaced on the roster. The title of the arc suggests that perhaps Chase wants to find some way of reviving Gert, perhaps through the same time-travel methods that the New Pride plucked a young Geoffry Wilder from the 80's. Others have speculated that he could bring about an "undead Zombie Gert", as horror is one of the few genres in Marvel that RUNAWAYS doesn't have a cast member representing (unless you count "Nico as a mage" as horror; I merely see it as "magic" which is simular but not the same; Dr. Strange has fought alongside superheroes many times). True, the Runaways dealt with a vampire in the first volume, but it's not the same.

this has been bothering me actualy, if the new pride plucked him out of the 80's...doesn't that irrevocably change the future and therefore the lives of the runaways. Surely he's not there to either have or raise (don't remember if he'd had alex yet) alex so every past event running up to this changes.

They mindwiped young Geoffry so that when he was sent back to the past, he remembered nothing and history was allowed to run it's course.

runaways always has the coolest covers! Still doesn't beat the ducks though :D

Definately. RUNAWAYS has the most constrant stream of great covers of any ongoing I've seen this century.

FYI, that solict suggests that the core title WILL tie into the CW mini, just not until next arc. That's fine.

Well, when you jump back and forth between Jo Chen and Marcos Martin, that's hardly a surprise. But it should be noted that Fables has actually had a constant stream of better covers for its entire run, since James Jean has done every Fables cover to date.

So Alphona hasn't been drawing Runaways? Sure seems like his art to me in the last arc.

I don't read FABLES, so I hadn't "seen" them. The statement stands. ;)

Nope, Norton has been filling in for a 3 issue arc from #19-21. He's better than Miyazawa, who has done past fill-in stints on RUNAWAYS. In fact I like Norton's art quite a lot, have since GRAVITY.

Okay. I haven't seen #19 yet if indeed it's out yet. I thought everybody was refering to the "Parental Guidence" arc. That was confusing me. yeah, I don't really like Miyazawa's art, especially compared to Alphona's. That's why I didn't buy that once arc where Karolina goes off into space.

RUNAWAYS #19 came out last week on the 16th.

I feel Miyazawa gets more flack than he deserves because he's not bad, he's not Bachelo (who only drew the two ugliest covers the title ever had), just isn't as fitting on the book with the manga-style. Norton is a better fit and is a great fill-in artist, IMO.

Well yeah, pretty much everybody is better than Bachalo, except for maybe Ramos.

i don't like that cover above. the way vision and victor have been acting weirdly together i fear the "new" villain could be some sort of merger between them or a drastically twisted victor. and i like victor :(

Miyazawa's not Bachalo--this is true. He is, however, bad. Quite bad. So bad I often wonder if he could draw a proportional (i.e. not dumpy) human figure to save his life. Oh yeah, he's bad.

I wouldn't mind seeing Victor develop a bit of an edge to his character. I mean he puts up with so much from the other Runaways that it would be nice to see a stronger side to his character. I mean Nico completley dominated him in that bedroom scene in issue #19.

Also, when is #2 of Young Avengers/Runaways out?

I don't like his powers, and he's just so gay. And I don't mean gay gay, cause we all know he likes it up the pooper. I mean he's just completely wet. Plus each of them is supposed to represent their alter ego. How the **** does wiccan represent thor.
