So if the Sentinels have been around the entire time, where have they been?
Not in use.
They only seem to be made operational and active at the end of The Wolverine.

not everything that was around in the 70's-80's are still around today, or talked about/ mentioned on a regular basesSo if the Sentinels have been around the entire time, where have they been?
They're 18 ft. tall. They already are approaching The Animated Series size, if they're not there already. The people in the background, closest to the sentinel, look as though they pose about as much a threat as Rogue and Wolverine in these shots.

Or in another timeline.
In general, it's not ridiculous to assume that Sentinels are a technology that doesn't quite work out in the 70's, is put into retirement, and then through advances in tech, becomes a key part in the struggle against humans and mutants in the future.
tho, you would think if they were still around during the OT timeline, there would've been at least one at the United Nations summit (in x1) with all the worlds leaders gather in one place
Maybe they were declared to inhumane, causing too many casualties than targets. And are banned like Sarin Gas, Napalm, or even the Atomic Bomb.
It's not that they stopped being a threat they just stopped being used but most likely being perfected in secret not to mention the blueprints probably still existed. Just because no one uses it doesn't mean its not a threat. And it seems that its going to make a comeback. The only way to get rid of the threat is to prevent it from being created.
