I’ve seen 5 superhero films this year this one is so far the top, way about Wonder Woman and a little bit higher than Spider-Man.

Actually I would personally put quite a number of films I’ve seen this year above Wonder Woman, a large part of it in the middle almost put me to sleep and the last big revelation and special effect are very vanilla and by the book. Those are only the bigger of many problems I have.

This one entertained me by a long mile. I am actually tempted to pay for the second time to see again. That would be unprecedented.

A total dazzling experience! Best of the Thor films. The delightful influences of Flash Gordon and Big Trouble In Little China are perfectly put in place. Blanchett is outstanding as Hela. Hemsworth is at his finest as Thor in here. Loved the chemistry of "The Revengers", particularly Hulk and Thor. I wished a little more from The Executioner. All in all, third time in indeed the charm here!

There was definitely a lot of Jack Burton in Thor's character and I loved it. The aftermath of his "That's what heroes do" speech to Valkyrie reminded me so much of this :funny:

Instantly made me think of this track.

I also watched it twice at the theatre. Something i had never done before. :cwink:

There's one thing you should know about me before I start my review. I rarely watch action movies, and it's even rarer that I like them. I'm more of a historical drama/biography type gal. In accordance, the most importing things to me are the characters, their interactions, and their development.

Therefore it's a surprise that I thought the action in this movie was the most enjoyable part. When Led Zeppelin kicks on again during the finale and Thor, Valkyrie, Loki, and Hulk are all fighting in slow motion, that was the most awesome thing I've ever seen.

The humor hit pretty well for me. This is the funniest Marvel movie yet, and that's a good thing. The music, as well, is worth noting. It's not often I leave a movie humming part of the score.

Now for my gripes. All the characters felt one note to me. Bruce, Thor, Hela. Even Loki, who is usually interesting, I found flat. Valkyrie ended up being my favorite character, which I was not expecting at all.

I'm sorry guys. I didn't like Korg. I thought he was unfunny and unnecessary. Skurge was also pretty unnecessary, now that I think of it. All that time would have been better spent on our main characters.

With the exception of Odin's death scene, I was disappointed with the emotional aspect. There were a few touching moments, but they were over too quick. I would have liked to linger on them for longer. The character development was there, but it also felt rushed.

Ragnarok is definitely the best Thor movie. I highly recommend it. But I still feel that the previous two had better character moments.

Right now my top five MCU movies are:
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier 9/10
2. Captain America: Civil War 9/10
3. The Avengers 8/10
4. Thor: Ragnarok 8/10
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron 7/10

I'm looking forward to Black Panther and Infinity War, but I think I'll be leaving this forum now. I need a little break from superheroes. Stay awesome, guys.

I would put WW and Spiderman at the top followed by Thor ragnarock then GOTG2 as the weakest.

I'd say TR is one of the stronger Thor films, though I wouldn't put it as one of Marvel's best.

Its more along the lines of AAOU, Antman, Dr Strange, and GOTG2. Okay to solid films which are fun romps while watching with a movie audience, but ultimately don't stay with me that long after seeing it.

Just saw it and I already want to see it again. Like immediately. That is rare for me. Oh god, what a ride that was.

This was certainly a fun movie, although it went overboard with the humor a few times. Overall, it helped advance most of its characters and introduce a couple of interesting new ones.

Hela delivered, and I like that the climax had a fresh twist from the other Marvel films.Odin's role was surprisingly emotional, and Dr. Strange's cameo was well-crafted. Valkyrie was a fresh addition to Thor's cinematic roster.

Unfortunately, Hulk was far too bumbling despite some impressive power displays. His character regressed, and Korg's personality had very little depth. I was even more disappointed that Miek did almost nothing.

Soooooooo happy right now! Loved it so very much.

The final fight scene sequence was glorious and I can think of nothing I would change (but - the EYE! No walking that one off!)...the humor hit for me 80% of the time, and I didn't find it overpowered the interpersonal stuff, there was a balance that worked for me. Thor is different, but more as character growth from going through a lot, he is still Thor. He's a grown up, not chasing his brother around any more. And I like that things were revisited, it made it part of the natural dialogue of a relationship. Like "get help" ... it wasn't just a one-shot, later, when Hela is walking toward them on the bridge, and Loki is eyeing her and says "I'm not doing 'get help'" - that was perfect. Some of the previously missed opportunities for complexity came in, too, like the confirmation of Pax Asgardia, that made me very happy.

Perfect set-up for events of Infinity War, too.

Going to shut up now, because I'll just gush. I'll be back there tomorrow, though, I need to see those fight sequences in a theater a few more times.

Great that you loved it, and there's nothing wrong with gushing. We should revel in what makes us happy! :woot:

Very nice to know that you loved it Roast. Yeh those fights sequences are really cool and in my second viewing i could really take it all in and just totally appreciate the epicness of it. I was leaning forward in my seat geeking out. ;)

Glad you liked it, but to say Hulk regressed is out seeing as he was almost a mute in previous films.

I don’t think half my audience realized that was Matt Damon as Loki. I checked IMDB and looks like of Chris’s brother played Thor.

This was dumb as **** and I mean that in best possible way. 9/10.

I recognized Matt Damon right away. I didn't catch Sam Neill until the 2nd time I saw the movie.

Just got back, was lukewarm going on but man did it win me over.

-Thor and Hulk/Banner have insane chemistry

-Tessa as Valkyrie was straight bad-ass

-Loki was awesome as ever

-Hela might be my new favorite MCU villain.

Overall: 9/10

Easily the best Thor movie. This is now two straight Marvel franchises in which I thought Part 3 was the best of the trilogy (Captain America being the other). It really felt more like Guardians of the Galaxy than it did the previous two films.

Pros:

The action and excitement level were through the roof. It was definitely a more epic and fantastical film than the previous two. It was also gorgeous to look at. Up there with Doctor Strange as one of the best looking CBMs out there.

Chris Hemsworth was able to let loose with this film. I liked him before, but this was by far his best performance as the character.

It was legitimately funny in several places with most of the jokes hitting for me.

Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum really hammed it up as the main villains, which is really what this film needed. Hela was more of a combination of Hela/Amora from the comics as opposed to just Hela, but that never bothered me. Not a ton of depth here, but they were fun.

Hulk talks! Again, I think this is easily the best portrayal of him in a live-action film.

The score. Loved it.

Cons:

I thought the middle part of the film sagged a bit. I enjoyed the Sakaar stuff, but I felt it really went on too long for not having much of anything to do with the actual plot.

The other Asgardians from the previous films aside from Thor and Loki (and maybe Heimdall) really got the shaft.

The Doctor Strange stuff, while amusing, didn't really fit in with the rest of the movie and didn't seem to have much purpose other than to have him there. They could have just as easily had Loki take Thor straight to Odin instead of having the little side trip.

While I think the idea that the MCU doesn't take things seriously enough and that there is no dramatic tension is incredibly overblown, I do think there is one case in this film where it kind of was an issue. I felt that Banner's concern about losing himself in the Hulk was too easily glossed over and brushed aside. This was a serious matter for Banner, but he is treated more like he's just being crazy.

Overall though, I really did enjoy it and would put it around the same spot as the other two MCU films from this year. 8/10

If I were to rank them right now, I would have GOTG2 first, this one second, and Homecoming third, but they are close enough that it could end up being subject to change in the future.

On the Dr. Strange/Odin issue- there was apparently way more in NY before the reshoot, and I even think you can see Odin die in the alley in the first full trailer. He's in front of Loki when Mjolnir detonates, from what I can see. Probably means there was some Hela/Odin interaction?

I wonder what was the problem with all that NY/Odin footage? Very curious and hope an answer comes some day.

I don't know about any of that stuff. But Odin's death scene was one of the best scenes in the film. I don't think I'd want to trade that for him possibly dying in some New York alley.

Well maybe it will be a deleted scene when it eventually comes to home video. As for why, I think that they did some early test screenings and the whole Hobo Odin and scenery it took place in did not go over well with the viewers. They felt putting Odin on a Norweigan landscape felt like a better setting where a more emotional discussion could take place between him and his sons.

I can see how venue could be the issue. Sitting by the sea, vs. sitting on a garbage can, for a heart to heart. That's got to be it (but enquiring mind wants to know, better yet, see!)

That scene was really, really, well handled. There was actual closure there. And gut-punches.

The Norway setting was MUCH better than a scene in the alley would have been.
