The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread - Part 7

He wasn't just talking about TDKR though, but Mad Max as well and franchise films in general. All he was saying is that with these large films the role your playing is basically just a type, a variable in a formula. He has a point. This isn't the first time he's played the villian in a big franchise film either. He played Shinzon in Star Trek Nemesis. He said himself that he takes these kind of things just as a stepping stone to other things.
I don't think it means it won't give it is all though, if hes out to make a name for himself he aims to impress.
I'm not worried about Hardy's meh comments on TDKR, for a few reasons...

1. Before TDK, Heath Ledger openly admited (using the f-word) that he thought comic book movies were stupid, with BB being an exception. **This was from an article**

2. ALso before TDK, Heath said he didn't even finish reading The Killing Joke, he put it down like 1/3 through it. **This was also from an article**

3.**This one I could be wrong on, I heard it from someone else** Suposedly one of the big reasons Heath took on TDK role was because he just wanted a movie that would take up his time, or something of that effect.

4. And finally... "In Nolan We Trust" After almost 10 years of fantastic movies and performances, I trust Nolan's decisions.

So what happened with the Joseph Gordon Levitt's big news?

So late to the party here... but is hardy bashing comic book movies or comic books themselves?

Meh... as long as he gives a great performance I don't care for his opinion.

Gary left LAX today as well. You'd think WB would just hire a private jet for all of them. :D

Folks, get ready. This next month is going to be awesome.

He pretty much confirmed he is doing TDKR for the paycheck and not the film itself . As long as the film is great and he doesn't phone it in i could care less . He cameoff as a snob but its not like I will be having drinks with Hardy

This is what he said
You deal with something Dark Knight – or Mad Max, or Superman or Spider-man, whatever – it’s like going to work in an airport and going, ‘Hi I’m over here!’ and then everybody goes ‘Oh here’s that, that’s the villain of the piece.’ Then it’s a thousand people going to Duty-Free. Like, [shouting] ‘I AM THE VILLAIN!’ and make a lot of noise. There’s a formula here, you can’t muck around with it. There’s a lot of rules, you’re restrained in many ways as an artist. But then you’re also grateful because of the huge exposure and the paycheck.
Or the not-paycheck ‘cause they’re making you a stahhh. Whatever it is, you’re paying an entrance to getting higher exposure. These movies are huge vehicles to make a lot of money… and make a large audience happy. So now you’re at the very top level of trying to bring character work in a boutique way to something that is, y’know, Starbucks.
Predictably, many panties have been bunched over these relatively trivial comments. :oldrazz: Some of our expert translators in the peanut gallery have come up with some very colorful interpretations of what he's saying here.

I'm getting really excited with all these pics and tweets about the gang leaving for Pittsburgh. Let's get this party started! :awesome:

So Batman, Blake and Gordon are all headed there. Where's Bane and Miss Kyle? Alfred, Fox and Tate can join in too if they want! :awesome:

No, it's nothing about comic books.
Here you go, link to the interview -

I think it's silly for people here to be comparing Heath Ledger's comments on comic book movies to Tom Hardy's comments, as Hardy is talking about hollywood-blockbuster type films basically. Bringing your finest acting skills, your art, to a huge movie.
It's just that the way he is referring to films like TDKR is "questionable" to some here, as it might appear as if he doesn't think much of the role itself.

However, it can be observed that he cares about investing himself in the act of bringing fine acting to big movies, and extending upon that he probably respects Nolan for encouraging that and bringing that finery to the blockbuster realm of films. Aside from this I think he's having some fun with the interview and can't say anything too specific about TDKR anyway.

Yeah, Tom is saying that Hollywood blockbuster type films limit themselves in the ability to create and develop characters because a lot of producer's interest is in making actors stars rather than giving them a big sandbox to play in.

He's actually right.

I'm getting so pumped for this Pittsburgh shoot. Don't let us down ninjas.
The ninjas will pull through! The big shoot at the college is this weekend, are we expecting something earlier this week?

THR's planned schedule for Cotillard from February has her in Pittsburgh. So...maybe?

No . Look at Ledger . Its a lazy snobby attitude that thinks all smaller films have to be superior than larger films. Good actors make the part their own

It's not that it can't be done, it's that Hollywood rarely allows it. The Nolans are the exception because they actually bring in smart scripts.

Films suck now, not sure if you've noticed.
