The Tekken Thread

Nah, not many are there who are able to do that.
And I'm one of the ones that don't, I usually just pick a random character and start smashing buttons and hope for the best.

Most people tend to play to their strengths. I tend to use Paul a lot, and I focus mainly on his power, and the few juggles I know, so I rarely if ever break out the ten hitters. I've seen dozens of people use somebody like, Yoshimitsu, and none of them use him the same way. That's one of the reasons why this game has so much depth. You don't have to master a character, just learn a few moves and play it your way.

Has anyone ever perfectly mastered a character? Because i once heard a interesting theory on Tekken. The game engine is so complex, when someone uses a character, they never use all of the movies that character may have. For example,if you use Lei..are you really going to use all his moves and remember his various stances? You could know most, but not all of them. There are some who know, and use all moves that a character has..but it's not often you see that.

True but it does show how skilled you are. I've been playing Hwoarang and Lei for a while now but I've only thoroughly mastered Hwoarang (except for Just-frame Sky Rocket). There's an edge in knowing lots of moves. No fixed pattern for your opponent to observe, the less likely he'll be able to block some. That being said, I've never successfully used Lei's Drunken Fist parry successfully.

That being said, you should go with whicheveer your most comfortable with. There is no 1 way to play any character. Different guys like to play their sig characters in their own way. Like Anubis said, he prefers Paul cause he pretty much bulldozes through the rest but I've played some pretty solid Paul players who prefer to go all tricky and **** with fakies and half-combo fakies. Even Hwoarang whose supposed to be played as a defensive fakie character can be played in an all-out offensive way.

See the style you prefer. There are LOADS of tournament vids and combo vids on Youtube. I tend to check out the stuff Tekkenzaibatsu churns out, especially by a player named Castel. Watch, dissect and see if you intergrate their style into your game. Or break in your character in a new way, its all cool so as long as your having fun. But if you're talking Professional gaming...well...I dunno.

ARGH!! Just saw the Tekken 6 machine in my local arcade. "Cabinet testing" only though. The machine had T5DR playing instead. The wait is killing me!

YES! The game is out in my arcade at long last and after giving it a twirl I must say, TSix is going to be a treat for new and old players alike. Tekken's always been seen as purposefully slow and stiff in order to allow players an easier learning curve for time-sensitive moves like Just frame Sky Rocket or Omen but after giving the game a few good tries I'm certain that the pace of the game has changed significantly in a good way.

Oh, and look out for Bonus Stage baddie Nancy MI-1**** or other, a fun bonus game reminicent of the old SF2-SSF2 Bash a Car bonus stages. Remember though, Nancy bashes back! Will be back with some new character grades! Zafina's first on my list!

Heh, as it turns out, Hwoarang's really got a new bag of tricks but you guys will see for yourselves soon enough. Giving Zafina a try I have to say she's got a pretty tough learning curve. I've only managed to pick like, 4 combos playing as her till I got pounded by the CPU or a challenger comes by. She's cool but in the hands of green player, slow, predictable and pretty damn stiff.

Leo on the other hand surprised me. Let's just say she truly is a beginner's character and I was having a lot of fun with her moves. Hard-hitting, with about three stances though a bit of a slowdown between stances makes her vunerable. Regardless, with Leo I could beat about 3 Vet players in my local arcade till they finally picked up on my strategies. Even then, I gave them a good kick-around.

Miguel I haven't tried but I've fought two players using him and already I hate the guy. I like to think of him as a harder-hitting Bryan. His moves seem purposefully slow but deals some major damage and his got a lot of knock-down moves which can really make use of the Bounce system effectively.

On the Bounce and Rage systems...I have to say, I never really expected it to be anything more than a tacked on thing. But they DO add more depth to the game. The Bounce system (regarded as Broken by some players) does benefit more characters than others but due to the air-combo damage equaliser, it won't exactly kill you. It is irritating when playing with flailers like Baek who pretty much do the same thing over and over and over again (***s) when they see the bounce but really great bounce juggles require skill and pace. With Bounce, the Wall stages are more significant than before.

Rage does give a certain adrenaline rush when you're in Rage mode or if your fighting an opponent in Rage. I wrong step, one timed grab or EWGF and no joke, you're ***ked. It makes the dying moments of the fight all the more intense where even a noob is suddenly on equal footing (of sorts). I have to admit, while I had my doubts, Namco did right with Rage mode.

Now for the rants: Stages. Great graphics...****ing small spaces to work with. I was very surprised by the size of some of these stages. Their not Virtua Fighter small but small enough that it's noticeable. 1 stage in particular called "Rustic Asia" which is the Chinese Village stage in the Pig pen is a fave among Wall combo addicts (Baek players). Unless you're an aggressive player, you'll find yourself cornered pretty quickly. ANother thing: Breakable walls and floors. Very ***ked up. Ruins the pace of the game though it does make for good distraction when your getting your ass handed back to you. Still, it doesn't feel right. So far I've only encountered two such stages which is all there should be. Taking a play from DOA was NEVER a great idea.

I didnt even realize the game was available

I thought that there would be no more Arcade machines, that the Tekken games would go straight to a console. It's..very cliche` for those who still like to play fighting games that way.

Nah. While most Western gamers believe Arcade gamers are an extinct breed, in the East, Arcade gamers are still the cream of the ***king crop. Its partly because not everyone has Internet access and almost everyone does not want to chalk up wins/losses to the sudden connection glitches. Plus, the feeling of guys crowding around a machine either watching in awe or snikering like jackasses is kinda cool. Love it!

Guess what Americans? Tekken 6 (Arcade) is coming your way. And thank GOD too, fact is, they won't release the PS3 edition till the rest of the world plays the arcade version first. Troubleshooting issues and stuff I guess. Either that or they want to earn their precious arcade penny before launching Tekken 6's Online gameplay. There's no telling whether that system will Sink or Swim. Hope the boys at tekkenzaibatsu get their game soon, I'm running outta ideas for my Hwoarang.

I didnt even know they were making a movie.

I mean by making a movie in full CGI rather than live-action. There are way too many inconsistencies in Live-Action, alot of elements unfaithful to the original story. Namco's Tekken series got a lot of good press because of its beautiful CGI endings/openings and such. They should have done that.

Advent Children is pretty standalone. You just have to remember two characters, the hero Cloud (blondie) and the villain Sepiroth (silver haired dude). They basically take up the bulk of the story. Just watch it for the CGI, its pretty impressive

Uh...okay. Looks like Kotaku just smashed my hopes of a May release for Tekken 6's PS3 version. According to them, T6 won't see home release till November...which sucks.

I think if they do a film it should be based around 3 characters mainly and then start mentioning other peoples stories sort of like in POTC and make it a trilogy.

I don't understand why these movies are made, high chance is that it won't do well. Stick to games,or CGI movies. I once heard that Heihachi was meant to die after the 5th game..but I don't know if it's true.

Just noticed this Tekken thread, 6 looks like it's going to be kick ass and is shaping up nice. I haven't played a Tekken since Tag tho. My local Mall got rid of it's arcade, and haven't picked up a Tekken title since. Me and my friends wore out our controllers playing Tag tho lol.

In fact 2 of my friends got really good and kicked all of our asses. Funniest fighting game moment I saw was when they got so used to eachother they traded kicks with ducks. One friend kicked, the other ducked got up and kicked, the other ducked, and so on. They did this for like 30 seconds straight heh.

Anyway Hwoarang was my fave, I liked King and Jin, and Paul as well. Reading this thread is kinda getting me excited to get back into it, think I might pick 6 up when it comes out.

You can always download Tekken Dark Resurrection off of the PSN. Its online enabled and an HD version of the PSP Tekken 5 game. It looks and plays pretty good

Is the arcade situation in the States really that bad? The way I here it, Namco doesn't bother bringing the arcade game over there because there isn't much interest in arcades in America anymore.

I can only speak for myself, but while in middle and High school me and my friends hung out at a local arcade (lived in a small town at that time), and a 30 min drive away (where I live right outside of now) we had 3 good arcades. Now, all 3 arcades gone, the one in that small town is gone, only semi-arcade I've seen near me since is at the stadium seating theatre and even that's just Time Crisis 2, Soul Caliber 2 (still), and a few motorcycle games. The arcade scene here is horrible, there was demand as the mall arcade was always packed, but gone now. I miss it honestly :(, I went to Indianapolis and they had a few arcades there, but I don't feel like driving that far everyday lol.

Hate to break it to you man, but according to Kotaku, the only arcade in the States that will have a couple of Tekken 6 machines is some mall in Texas. Online gaming is a pretty big deal over in the States but for fighters the general concensus is that their better in arcades.
