The Thing (remake)

Just because isn't really a good reason to remake The Thing. I mean, Carpenter's ending was perfect and it basically made it so that it couldn't realistically produce a sequel.

You can't really make an Escape movie without Carpenter and Russell involved.

The ultimate point is that these films were Carpenter's statements. If they want to make a statement, make their own movie with their own characters.

That's weak. Every director's film is their statement. Also why can't you make an Escape film without Carpenter and Russell? Obviously you can...beause they are. Also Carpenter is onboard but not as a director.

Carpenter has said that he loves the remakes. He loves how he gets checks for doing nothing while people tell him his movie was much better. So basically they can remake a movie, it doesn't mean they should.

And Carpenter movies are different. Carpenter used his movies as more of a statement on society than other action directors. Sure, they may have the similar lines of dialog and similar scenes, but it was a different time when Carpenter made that movie.

I suppose I don't get remakes in general. I mean, does someone remake a novel? A paining? I could repaint the Mona Lisa because I think it's good and deserves and update, but for what purpose?

^ The reason you don't remake a novel is because when reading a novel you use your imagination. There is no budget, no F/X, no CGI, etc...That's why the book is usually better than the film. However people do make movies based on Novels and sometimes different directors and actors take another shot at it and make it...different. You're comparing apples to oranges. Movies are basically a visual interpretation of the material it's based on.

I don't care if his movies are different. All movies are different. All directors are different. He isn't freaking Jesus Christ ok. The Thing remake is not as needed as Escape from NY that's for sure. Escape from NY was more of a singular character driven film that screamed for futher adventures. It's low budget showed at times and the story was great. It deserves an update and if I was Carpenter I'd be thrilled to see so many people enjoyed my idea that others want to update it.

The thing is (no pun intended), is that that singular character, Kurt Russell IS Snake Plissken. Oh well, it's not like as soon as the remake comes out all copies of the original are going to explode.

^ It's not the same. The Thing isn't really a character like Snake Plisskin ok. You can't compare a monster to an anti-her/icon of sorts. I know it won't happen but if they wanted to they could write dozens of Snake Plisskin stories and they could be interesting. Monster movies kind of get old after a couple films. That's why Aliens got old after Cameron's film, Predator, and now they combine the 2. There's much more depth to a human character and flexibility in the stories you can tell. All you can do with The Thing is change the time frame or where you want to put The Thing to cause destruction. Your arguments aren't making any sense.

I'm just saying that the depth of the human character of Snake Plissken is Kurt Russell's role.

The Kurt Russell one will always be the best. I'm so tired of this remake bull****, Hollywood's out of ideas.

It's funny they keep trying to remake Kurt Russell movies!

Hey Hollywood, did you ever think it had anything to do with...Kurt Russell?

**Makes Bucktoothed Face**

You know it's becoming rediculous the day they start talking about remaking Executive Decision! :woot:

(I'm not saying th^t it's a bad movie)

The depth is in the character Kurt Russell portrayed. Kurt's personality shined through as he owned that character. Kurt did his job and made Snake his own. Now it's Gerard's turn to show us how he can handle the character and hopefully turn this film into an ongoing franchise. Too many people think remaking a film is against the law or something. There's nothing sacred about Escape from NY. It's a movie.

John Carpenter's take on the Thing is one of my all-time favorites. I'll give this remake a chance.

I agree, this is one movie that everytime I watch it I fall inlove with it each time. It never got the credit it deserved. Regardless of what I hear: ie. who's in it, who's directing it, im going to see it. Just because the original might be perfect that doesnt mean a remake is a bad idea it should be the opposite, if a movie is perfect then it should be interesting to see how a remake can improve on the original, its just a matter of the perspective you choose to take. optimist or pessimist?

I love Carpenter's The Thing as well. I'd prefer a sequel over a remake however...

I would like to see them do with what they should have done with dawn of the dead. Create a superior remake and then that same group create another sequel. remake The Thing and then a year or two later make a sequel.

Does anyone know where they shot the originals outside scene's ?

A great story can be retold an infinite amount of times. This doesn't only apply to classic literature.

Interesting, any idea which of you is right ? :D they did an amazing job making it look sparse and isolated.

It's right on the commentary, John and Kurt say it themselves, they talk quite a bit about it.

LOL

By original (if that's what you meant), the location I provided was for The Thing from Another World.

:O

If you're talking about the original, then I think Shredder is right. As for the 1982 version, then it was filmed at the glacier in Stewart, B.C., Canada.

ROFLE WAFFLE!

:p
