The Thor: Ragnarok Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

Having seen the movie twice now, once in english and once dubbed into german, I can only hope that german critics have enough sense to not judge Ragnarok based on the dub.

German dubs tend to be amazing, blockbuster dubs in particular, but this is a complete disaster.

The translation is OK. They obviously had to take a few liberties here and there, but they stayed reasonably true to the original script at all times. It may not be quite as funny as the original but most of the humour translated pretty well. No, the problem with the german dub is another entirely. Namely terrible voice acting and a lack of common sense.

No strain is ever audible in any of the character's voices during fight scenes for instance and no matter how far away from the camera a character is, you always hear them as loud and clear as if they were standing right next to you. It makes no sense and you can't help but be aware of that fact. It's a real immersion breaker.

As for the voice acting: The guy who voices Thor appears to be completely unaware of the fact that Thor goes through several different emotions over the course of the film's 130 min runtime and whoever voices Loki really couldn't be bothered. They have the combined emotional range of a teaspoon. That is to say: none.

I typically prefer subtitles to dubbed movies.

I'm so glad movie theaters in my country never dub movies and use subtitles instead. I can't stand dubbed movies, and if theaters dubbed movies here I would just wait for them to come out on Blu-Ray/VOD instead of going to the theater.

Subtitles are better than dubbing to me too as you capture the performance of the actor, someone like RDJ, instead of whoever is doing the dubbing.

Why surprisingly? Luke Cage is extremely well written (with the exception of Diamondback).

Reviewers often get the first 6 or so episodes early, so if they reviewed the show based on that it would certainly help explain the strong positivity towards Luke Cage. The first half is really strong while the second is much less so.

I'll def pay attention when I go see it tomorrow (especially the distance thing you mentioned)

yeah voice acting is really important & can really take you out of the movie
But thankfully we have a great actor voicing Loki that people even say he's on par with Hiddles
I like dubbing generally especially for blockbusters b/c you can easily focus on the visuals & not on reading subs but I'll sure check this in English as well but maybe 4th or 5th time
First I need to absorb the whole picture with visuals etc

Wulllllll......IM got 251 reviews and 17 rotten. Thor is 131 and 5. Soooooo, if Thor gets 90% from here out with 120 more reviews, it would exactly equal IM. If it gets fewer reviews, it would have a slightly higher ratio. If it gets more, it would have a slightly lower ratio.

Anything over 9 out of 10 of the remaining reviews would pretty much ensure an IM percentage or slightly above. Right now it's getting about 25 out of 26, but the last 60 reviews have been about 14 out of 15.

That's a very long winded way of saying "It depends on whether or not the critics who have submitted reviews are representative of those who have yet to submit them." This is a way of saying "As we get more info, we'll have a better idea." This is, in turn, a way of saying "We'll know for sure when the final numbers are in."

Genius, huh? t:

That's just weird to me. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars on these movies...and then they drop the ball on something that important? That could cost them millions. It's worth hiring good voice actors...or at least hiring someone to hire good voice actors.

Some people read slower than others as well due to any number of things. (poor eyesight, learning disorders) And of course there is the problem of having to edit the dialog to fit onscreen.

I can tolerate subs, but there is no doubt it takes away from the movie. I felt it really keenly with Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. Gorgeous movie and I hated looking away to read the subs. It's also bad to miss "reaction shots" of a non speaking character when they are onscreen as you read the dialog.

In part because of Diamondback and even the poorly conceived costume he wore. However, mostly because the first half was so terrific with Cottonmouth, but after he died the story seemed to take a major nose dive in terms of quality. I know I am not alone on this belief, but I am not even saying the show was bad by any means. I very much enjoyed it. However, to give it the highest rating out of any of the MCU products Televisions or Movies to me seems surprising.

I guess you're right and it's different for everyone. I love subtitles and am used to speed scanning them as I'm watching everything on screen. I put them on on all films (in English) I watch at home (as long as the font is pleasant to look at) and it's especially valuable for me on any technical film like sci-fi/fantasy with jargon where I want to understand every word said (and even how they're spelt).

True. I can definitely see how that would have played a large roll in the higher rating. Still though while the story was Solid during the first half, I still liked some of the other MCU television products better.

I guess you're right and it's different for everyone. I love subtitles and am used to speed scanning them as I'm watching everything on screen. I put them on on all films (in English) I watch at home (as long as the font is pleasant to look at) and it's especially valuable for me on any technical film like sci-fi/fantasy with jargon where I want to understand every word said (and even how they're spelt).
