The Tobey Maguire/Peter Parker Thread

Yeah, but from what I heard at least 80-90% of the actors from "300" who had really defined abs were actually just CGI.

Then you heard wrong, mate and have been grossly misinformed. The actors had to train for 6 to 8 months to get in shape, doing some killer work outs. I've done the 300 workout...its not that hard if you do the work out via conventional methods but the killer is, you can't rest in between the different workouts...it's a continuous beating that your body takes. That work out could ultimately kill the physically weak.

Seriously, you're getting too obsessed over what another man's body should look like. Like I said, Maguire wasn't fat & for all we know he was as toned as in SM-1 so as long as he could fit in the costume, I don't care how toned he actually was. Get over it & move on.

There is no obsession. I'm making what I feel is a valid complaint. However, I feel that you act merely as a Tobey apologist who's willing to shrug everything under the carpet just because it's him. You keep telling me that you don't think he was fat BUT um, I'm not saying you are. I've even said he wasn't fat. The FACT is, TMags lacked the physical look that spider-man should have. Think about it for a second, instead of trying to make it seem like a bigger deal than it is. If he's earning $20million for a role in which he's only in costume 15% of the time, would it be too much to ask for him to actually look the part? Valid question yes or no? Also, I'm not using this complaint as a be all to end all of what's wrong with these movies. It's just one of many observations that I find lacking in these movies and I'm speaking up about it. YOU may not care how toned he should be, fine, that's you but I do. I want to see this character who Raimi and TMags actually think and claim they're brining to life.

Exactly. I'm starting to wonder about some of these Hyper posters here. It seems all they care about is focusing on another mans body.

Then you should try reading more posts or expand on the threads you allow yourself to read because that for sure, isn't the case.

Seriously, is it really that big of a deal?

Is it that big of a deal for him to be in shape if he's in costume for 15% of the time and he's earning $20million for it?

Spider-Man has already made it's money and nothing can be done about it right now.

You're right. spider-man has made his money and that is why you got sm3 the way it turned out. Quantity wise, it's been the most profitable of all 3 movies. Quality-wise it got trashed...even by the Raimi/TMag loyalists on these boards.

@Jide- Just for the record Jide, Tobey must not be too lazy as he did ALL three films and could've walked away when he hurt his back. But instead he did ALL three films and didn't ***** or complain. Because of him sticking around for continuity sake I'll always respect him.

Keep deluding yourself. He came back for sm2 simply because he was offered more money. He got $20million for sm2, which was a $15million pay increase from the first movie 2 years earlier. For sm3, he got close to $30million. Yeah, he stuck around for continuitys sake...continuity in that his salary contniued to increase at ridicuous levels for doing very little and to keep apologist fanboys happy and wet.:whatever: :o

You say it's easy for you to get in shape? Tell me, how does being a full-time student compare to being an actor?

Easy. How many films outside spider-man has TMags done since 2002? He has plenty of time and money to get the right people to get his lazy ass into shape. As a student, time is luxury I lack. I'm mostly travelling to and from uni, studying or in class, with very little social time. I get up at 5am to work out every morning for just over 30minutes and then do the same at like, 11pm. It's what most people call, discipline.:o

A full-time student doesn't require you to gain and lose weight for roles. Maguire had to do films where he had to lose his muscle mass/toned body and then try to gain it all back in time for Spider-Man 2 and 3.

Boohoo. How many times did this happen to TMags? If this happened 3 times to regularly then you'd have a point but you don't. TMags over the last 5 years has been in pathetic physical condition for someone making as much money as he does and with the time available he has. Now that he's a father I guess this will only underscore his complete lack of discipline in getting into impressive physical shape.

So please, tell me how being a full time student compares to being an actor taking on million dollar roles? Also doing things to the body that obviously takes a toll.

He clearly has more free time than I do. What exactly has he done since sm1 outside the spidey movies??? He had to lose weight to play red pollard?? So?? In his condition, all he had to do was tone up, which is easier to do when you're thinner. A few weights here and there and mostly cardio stuff. Situps/crunches and push ups would have done him more justice than what was served in sm2 and 3 but hey, what's done is done. If you like TMags looking ordinary, good for you but some people prefer their superheroes to actually look like superheroes. Peter Parker has a well toned and highly defined body...that is an undeniable fact. Is it so wrong for me to want the same for the lead actor? I dont think so.

I believe you're obsessing over a trivial aspect. I could see your complaints if he came in looking like Jack Black or Ethan Suplee. I never said that Tobey Maguire looking ordinary is what I wanted, all I'm saying is that it's not a big deal right now as far as I'm concerned.

The majority of complaints from fans range from lack of action, no quips, and of course not seeing Tobey's body so they can pause, analyze, complain, and repeat the pattern the next day. Like I said, if he came in looking like a fat slob then I'd understand your complaints.

But he's not fat and that's not the problem. He's spider-man. He's supposed to be cut. What we have is another extreme. Sure, he's not fat but he lacks the physical look that he's supposed to have. I don't see anything trivial about it. Every other actor playing superhero roles aren't being paid as much as TMags and they're all getting cut and into shape. Why should TMags be an exception? Because he did one movie years ago that required him to lose a bit of weight? Or because he's your "precious" TMags who is the perfect spidey? :whatever:

No one is physically weak if they work out a lot. I've done some killer work outs to the point where my legs felt like jelly & I could barely stand. I'm pretty strong for my age but in this day & age, you have to be strong.

Btw, what exactly is the "300 workout"?

So, you're telling me every actor has to have a body just like the comic book character they're portraying? I'm not making excuses for Tobey Maguire but it's hard to say he wasn't that cut in SM-2 & SM-3 if we didn't see much of his body. Besides, why do they have to show a full body shot anyway? I'm pretty sure any straight male such as myself wouldn't care whether they show him shirtless or not. In any case, saying Tobey Maguire needs to have a body just like Spider-Man in the comic books & cartoons is like saying Brandon Routh should look just like the Ed Guiness version of Superman. Tobey Maguire was cut & toned enough & if you can't deal with that, don't even bother watching the movies anymore or any of the sequels that may be released in the coming years.

This is going in circles.

So....I'll just say he is not as cut as he was in the first one. Okay. Do we actually get a good look at him in SM3 (we do in SM2, so I continue to leave that off the list), no? So does it matter? No. We can't tell if he is or not and simply because we know in real life he isn't is there this constant *****ing.

C'est la vie. As for Uber calling Tobey a terrible actor. Go watch Wonder Boys, The Ice Storm, Cider House Rules, Ride with the Devil, Seabiscuit and The Good German (albeit the last was not very good) and get back to us on that one. I'd say Pleasentville which was superb, but he essientially plays a less geeky version of his Peter Parker in that movie.

By the way, Jide, did you ever read Koepp's draft?

Cider House Rules was just a good movie period. I remember being bored one evening & I turned on the TV & saw the movie on. I got so into it that I watched the whole thing & it was a really good movie. Didn't expect to see Tobey Maguire but he did a great job in that movie. I believe that he's one of the best actors of his generation & he still has a lot of potential.

300 workout

I do it six days a week; it's a freaking killer and not for the weak at all.

To Vegeta_1000:

300 Workout: a) Pullups - 25 reps
b) Deadlifts with 135lbs - 50 reps
c) Pushups - 50 reps
d) 24-inch Box jumps - 50 reps
e) Floor wipers - 50 reps
f) Single-arm Clean-and-Press with 36lbs Kettlebell - 50 reps
g) Pullups - 25 reps

Most of that's not even hard. I do most of that even when I'm just joking around & competing with my friends.

Seperately? Perhaps.

To do this right, you must do all without any breaks.

Most will die; probably you would too.

I completley agree, I remember renting Cider House Rules form the video store and I really thought it was good the first time I saw it.

Uh, no, I would not, I could do all that a couple times a day if I wanted to. When I do, I will PM you but right now I can't as my chest is hurting. Trust me, I'm not making excuses, I've already posted it a couple times on this thread. I might try to do it tomorrow but it's not that hard of a workout. All I'd need is a pull up bar & heavier weights but I could pull off some killer workouts myself that can get me into good shape.

Yeah, it was definitely a great movie. I've yet to see a lot of his other movies but I'll probably buy them sooner or later.

Ok, say what you want...but don't sound stupid saying, "Oh, yah, I do that all the time with my friends, blah, blah"

I do that workout too, plus extra cardio, and it is an extreme workout and not for the faint of heart...me and my brother got out friend to try it, before he went to boot camp and he couldn't take it after a while.

Have you seen The Good German, Pleasantville, or Seabiscuit? Those are some of his other very good movies and I recommend that you get those. You would enjoy them. :yay:

I'm not your friend & I'm not saying anything stupid. I do chin-ups/pull-ups everyday at school & sometimes I'll do three sets of 10 back to back. I also do reps with my weights everyday as well as sit-ups, push-ups, etc. I have nothing to lie about, that workout wouldn't even be a challenge for me.

Wow, so that is the 300 workout? This is what they had to do without any breaks? Everyday? Damn. I guess one could see results such as 300 if they did this for six weeks, watched they ate, and so forth.

I may buy those movies if I see them when I have the money. I heard that Seabiscuit was really good so that may be the main one I'll try to see if I can buy.

To be honest, I think this workout would only be hard if you're someone who doesn't work out regularly.

Yeah, the Good German is interesting and it's actually the first film where I ehard Tobey say the F word. I love how he beats the crap out of George Clooney.

That would be a great buy IMO.
