The Ultimate Universe - Obsolete?

No, it really doesn't. That's actually one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Whoever wrote that took a brilliant character and turned him into a greasy, two-bit thug. Awesome. :whatever:

They didn't turn him into anything. He was made that way. The brilliant character you're refering to still exists in 616.

BKV's take on Mr. Sinister, or "Sinister" really, was that he was a deranged psychic who killed mutants and believed he was talking to his master, Apocalypse. BKV set it up so that it COULD have been true, or he may have simply been crazy. Knowing how Kirkman's been taking all of his plot threads literally, though, Ultimate Apocalypse may be inevitable in his run.

The trouble with Ultimate is that it was created with post-modern sentiments in play and things like immortal mutants with dark blue leather costumes sometimes seem out of place. For the longest time, magic really didn't work well in Ultimate and various writers have been trying to shoe-horn mystical elements, from BKV with an ACTUAL "Ruby of Cytorrack" strengthening the mutant Juggernaut to Bendis's wonky Dr. Strange Jr., but IMO they don't work.

Could a revisioned Mr. Sinister been done better than BKV did? Absolutely. It was his first major arc on the title, and arguably his worst. It didn't mesh well with Austin's two issues that introduced Gambit and mentioned Essex as some sort of crime lord (a fill in in the middle of Millar's launch).

I liked the stairs-bit at the time, but some have overrated it.

Now see I haven't really read UFF, so I can't coment on that, my biggest beef with villains in the UU, is how Spidey's rogues gallery has been wasted. Scorpion, Vulture, Mysterio (heck even non Spidey villains like Omega red) have been vastly inferior to 616 counterparts because they were throw away characters, mere plot devices instead of characters, just an excuse for Spidey to beat something up at the begining of the story. 616 Green Goblin is already an A-list character, so Bendis writting a scary Ultimate Goblin is expected, but not really that impressive. Bendis gets bigger points for his use of Venom. But Bendis wanted to really impress, he should have made Vulture or Scorpion into better chracters in the ultimate universe.

Heck if they made D-listers like Trapster and Egghead into more threatenng chracters that would be impressive. Writing Green Goblin well, that's easy, writing Egghead well, there is a task.

Yeah, Bendis wasted Vulture, Mysterio, Scorpion, and plenty of others in his quest to have every female character in USM be a demigoddess, and to emasculate, humiliate, and ruin USM. He writes character-less drones for Peter to pummel to start some arcs before picking some enemy who knows Peter's ID to defeat him and then Peter needs a maguffin device or ally to save him. For the past 2 years at least. That is why I split.

Ultimate Universe seems to be working well as a launchpad for talent.

That makes sence, combine that with Marvel's rumored idea of getting rid of the Ultimate Universe..and there's the corperate reason.I never did think the Ultimate Universe would last this long. There have been both good and bad things, reviewings of old characters..but in the end..616 will never be outdone.
