Kyle sat silently the whole ride, soaking in as much information as he could.
The closer they got to Metropolis though, the more uneasy he felt.
Hal was flying the rocket, and Bats and that X guy were talking to the Joker.
So, where was the voice in his head coming from.
"Kyle Rayner."
Kyle blinked hard. Maybe it was just fatigue, or the thrill of the chase.
"Kyle Rayner."
Things started getting blurry. Kyle leaned back, rubbing his eyes through the holes in his mask. He opened them back up...
...and was standing in nothingness. A haze of blue and gray swirled around him in an endless void.
"Welcome Kyle Rayner. Most powerful Green Lantern of them all, and savior of the Corps."
Kyle looked around. No one was there, but he heard the voice clear as day.
"Who are you?"
"Someone who is in need of your help. The power of 3600 Green Lanterns flows through you. The power of a god."
"No, I gave that up a long time ago."
"Did you, or has your mind been blocking your true potential, afraid of the ramifications."
Kyle began to feel uneasy.
"You have a unique gift. A gift, that if joined with me, could save the human race, and this universe as you know it. The unity and wholeness of a peaceful race will rule supreme."
"Unity? No, I'm here to stop the Unity."
"Do not listen to your so called friends, Kyle Rayner. Their actions are misguided, and futile. Join with me, and you will achieve everlasting prosperity. Embrace your responsibility, and the rewards will be endless."
The voice began to change. It was becoming softer, more soothing and....almost feminine.
"Kyle..."
A shape began to swirl out of the mist. The shape of a human form, a female, coming towards him. The closer it got, the clearer and more familiar it became. It was...
"Alex?"
"Yes, Kyle, it's me."
"Alex, no. You're dead. I saw it. I watch them put you in the ground."
"No, Kyle. The Unity has given me life. We can be together again. Forever. Just come with me, join with us, and we'll live the perfect life we've always dream of. Take my hand, please."
Alex reached out toward Kyle. As her hand got closer, his ring began to spark and crackle with energy, almost as if it was warning him.
"I..."
"Join with us, Kyle."
"NO!" Kyle lashed out with his arm, blasting the construct with a searing blast of power. The figure dissolved instantly in a puff of mist.
"I will not give in. I'm a Green Lantern. I've taken my oath, and I will stand beside my friends."
"Then you will fall."
Kyle summoned all of his will power.
"We will FIGHT!" he yelled, a pulse of energy erupting around him from every direction. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open, and he felt a large breath escape his mouth. He didn't even know he was holding it. Gaining his bearings, he looked around. He received a few startled stares. Sweat was trickling down his forhead.
"It...it tried to take me. It attacked my mind, but I fought it off."
He looked up at the rest of the gathered heroes and villians.
"Jesus, what the hell is this thing?"
