The "World of Heroes" DC RPG Season III

It appears that we are beginning to amass an army against the Unity. And a cohesive one at that, as opposed to the ragtag group that fought in Metropolis.

But one of the newcomers concerns me. This Freeze. Granted, I know nothing about him. But to freeze us one moment, and become our ally the next...unusual. Looking at my own situation it is possible, but still unusual.

Superman has arrived, dressed in his typical attire. Excellent. That was one being we did not need to fight. The odds are starting to swing towards our favor.

But this plan of Freeze's still concerns me. His plan is just what we needed to buy time. Yet, is it too convinient that he showed up when he did? Could he actually be working with Unity? How easy would it be to betray us with the weapon? How does he plan on freezing all the unified in the world? I decide to have a few of my questions answered.

"Freeze, how do you plan to do this? Orbital platforms? A mobile gun? Or do you believe you can create a single weapon powerful and accurate enough to put all the unified in the world into hibernation?"

I then turn to the Bat. "And since he is apparantly one of your enemies, how can we be sure we can trust him?"

I get closer to Sinestro, so that we're the only one's privey to the conversation. It's odd that I'm having close quarters with an individual who I originally fought in the ocean a few months back.

"The plan itself is feasable, he was able to do the same thing for his wife for several years. Unlike Joker, Freeze is more humane. Besides, if I'm wrong..." I pick up another pair of cuffs, so that he'll understand.

The Joker was feeling pretty peeved at the moment. He'd offered a partnership with these do-gooders, and all they could do was stick him in a pair of handcuffs. They thought he was harmless right now. Oh, how wrong they were.

The Joker always had an ace up his sleeve. Always. Couldn't they comprehend that he WANTED to be caught? Couldn't their feeble minds possibly reason that he had given up his bomb trigger awfully easy? Apart from a few surplus bumps and bruises, everything was going the way he wanted. They may believe they had him under control, but they were all falling for his latest gag.

But his success all depended on one person. Harley Quinn. Where was she now? She'd be lost without him. He was willing to bet that she was feeling very...

...

Afraid. Harley Quinn was feeling very afraid.

"Oh Mister J!" she cried to herself, "What are those big galoots doing too you?"

She hoped her puddin's plans were all going okay. What he was doing was brave. Harley had never met a smarter, more courageous man in her life!

"If there's one person in the whole world who I trust to save us all, it's you, Mister J!"

Harley looked down at the object in her hand. The Joker had given it too her, told her to keep it safe. It was a small jewellery box, one you'd put a wedding ring in. But there was no ring inside. No, embedded into the interior was a big, red button...

"Seriously.... How good do I look in blue?"

Everyone looks at me. I love that I can do that. Annoy a group of the most powerful individuals in the universe. Its great being me.

"Ring, estimate power levels."

'Ring assess' that power levels are at 100%'

I grin. This is going to be less annoying than I thought.

I board the Invisible Jet and set my course for the Twin Cities.

The Parasite was busy draining the life out of Jay Garrick when the Unity's deep voice resounded inside of his skull.

Raymond Jones. Come to me immediately.

Rudy rolled his eyes and dropped the Flash's unconscious body, crumpling it on the ground. He gave the groaning body a swift kick, surely breaking multiple ribs, before being teleported to the Unity's ship.

*****

After the bright blue light of the teleporter faded and the Parasite adjusted his eyes to the bright, never-ending whiteness of the interior of the Unity's vessel, he approached the glowing blue orb of the powercore. "Whaddaya want, 'U'?"

I wish to congratulate you on your success against Jason Garrick. The threat that he presented has passed now that you possess his connection to the Speed Force until he recovers.

"Why did ya want me ta take down Garrick anyway? What possible threat could he have been compared to the other heroes?"

He was unique because his speed force aura partially negated the effects of my Unity. He was immune.

This peaked Rudy’s curiosity. "So now that I got his power, am I immune too?"

The Unity weighed its words very carefully. Raymond, if I wished to unite you and turn you into another mindless follower right now, I would not be able to do so unless you wanted me to, because we are in a telepathic link by mutual choice. Now that you are in possession of Jason Garrick's abilities, you are capable of terminating that link at any time you wish to.

"Hm. We wouldn't want that, would we?"

Certainly not.

"Alright. I guess. What about the other speedsters?"

I have removed Wallace West from the equation. I do not expect him to be a problem for the moment. Bartholomew Allen will be dealt with as well soon enough.

"Okay, now that that matter is settled, can ya put me back down on earth? I wanna get in on some more asskickin'."

All in good time, my friend. Now that Kal-El has rejected our union, you may be our last line of defense until more soldiers are recruited to my cause. This will no doubt 'put you where the action is', as you so eloquently described it.

The Parasite grunted a noise that could be described as 'huh?' at the notion of Kent's betrayal. He had been surprised by Clark's agreement to join in the first place, but even after that, Rudy had never thought that Superman would abandon a team that he was on. Oh well. It just meant that the Parasite would be allowed to kill Smallville now that he was on the enemy's side.

I will not allow you to kill Kal-El.

The Unity had read his mind. Rudy hated that, but he didn't want to break the mental link over a simple annoyance. "Why not?"

Because he is being re-educated even as we speak. You will not interfere or interact with him until I approve of it. Are we clear, Raymond?

The Parasite scowled at his employer. "Crystal," he said under his breath.

Excellent. Now that Jason Garrick is out of commission, we have bigger plans to execute.

The Parasite yawned loudly and listened to the Unity’s plan.

*****

Soon, Jones was teleported back to Keystone City. During his absence, someone had taken Garrick’s unconscious body, probably to a medical facility of some sort. Oh well. They’d be united soon enough.

Keystone Memorial

Mobs of unified zombies roam the streets outside of the hospital. I place the Jet on hover and autopilot and fly out of the loading bay. I enter the hospital through the roof. If J'onn was right, Garrick should be here. But how? With all the Unified automatons everywhere, what's keeping him alive?

I advance to the IC ward where there seems to be a barracade. Four automatons try to collapse the barracade. I pick up a gurney and toss it at them. They scatter and fall to the ground unconscious.

With a mighty heave I open the door that is barracaded. When the dust settles I see two figures in white coats holding iron rods protectively over the body of Jay Garrick.

"Merciful Minerva."

"Wonder Woman? Is that you? I mean, really you?" This doctor is visibly shaken but he's braver than some of the heroes I've worked with. Gardner for instance.

"It's me. You're going to be alright. How is The Flash?"

"He's alright physically, but we can't get him to wake up."

"Maybe I can help."

I pull the medicine pouch from my belt. Only enough for one application. I pray to Athena that this works. I apply the salve to Jay's feet and face. Hopefully it's magic will do the rest.

"What are you doing?" The nurse asks.

"This will make him feel better." Garrick begins to stir.

"He's coming around!"

"Uhh --- Wonder Woman? Where am I? The Parasite ---"

"All will be revealed soon enough, Flash. Right now the world needs you. Can you travel?"

He sits up. The strain is apparant, but like a true hero, he stands up.

"Just got to get my hat."

I can't help but smile.

"Let's get these two to someplace safe. Then you and I have an appointment at the North Pole."

We are going to win.

"IF you'd both kindly stop conspiring against me, we can make this quick and easy. This STAR Labs turret has an energy projection weapon that I was easily capable of converting into a freeze ray. I have all of my old gear in a boat that I used to come back to this godforsaken place. With the aid of a Green Lantern, more specifically his rings' precise ability to do complex and delicate labor, we can create a similar and larger scale weapon."

He walked over to the turret he had converted into a giant freeze cannon.

"If these cannons are in prisons, I assume they can be found in a variety of other places. And knowing my nocturnal nemesis as I do, he probably knows right where to find them. That is, if he doesn't already have a few larger ones floating around in orbit. My suggestion is that we have the Green Lanterns take me into space, and allow me their aid in performing surgery on one of Batman's orbiting sattalites, adding a precision freeze cannon, assuming he doesn't already have a comparable weapon in orbit. Which would save us time, which I can assure you is of the essense. In the meantime, the Lanterns not necessary for this plan can simply take this gun, and some of my other equipment and fly around freezing Unifieds until we're ready to do the grand finale. Any thoughts."

"The plan is sound, but there's only one problem: since the Dark Allience's attack on the Watchtower, they used ALL the orbiting sattalites to destroy it and the one's still functioning were barely enough to track people, let alone power a freezing cannon."

"I'm open to suggestions, you're the informed ones. I can tell you any energy weapon of a similar enough design would be suitable for the task. You say there is enough sattalite presence to track individuals? If we had could simply build a targetting system capable of pointing a freeze cannon with that level of precision, we wouldn't need a whole network. Simply one very fast computer, and one very large appparatus. And someone fast enough to use it adequately."

Kara watched as both her mentors flew off in search of their quarries.
Sigh. I guess that means I have to go hunt down Mr. Twinkle Toes. I guess I could try the easy way first...

She touches the buckle on her belt and it pops off, revealing itself as a small device looking alot like a cell phone. "Titans. This is Kara. Bart, if you're there we need you. Repeat, Kid Flash we need your help."

"Kara. This is Cyborg. Bart swung by here a couple days ago. He ditched his costume and his comm. He said he needed some alone time."

Damn. So much for the easy way out. Now, where would the fastest kid alive spend down time? Daytona? Nah, too obvious. Vegas? Nah, he doesn't look anywhere close enough to play in the fastest city in the world. Wait. He said something about wanting to vacay in Cabo some time. I guess thats as good a place to start as any.

She flew out of the Fortress northward, but not far enough to get anywhere near the states as she ducked into Cabo San Lucas. She scanned the area with her x-ray vision, and sure enough Bart was perched on a stool at Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo. She quick switched to her Linda outfit to avoid the mob, and walked into the bar.

"BARTHOLEMEW HENRY ALLEN! Just what in God's name do you think you're doing?"

"Well, I was trying to get drunk, but my body won't let me. My metabolism kills the buzz off of Everclear before it even hits me. The only plus side is I met the Red Rocker and Mad Anthony. They rock." He flashed Kara the metal hand gestures and then turned back to the bar. "What are YOU doing here, Linda? Gonna try to drag me back to the Tower? Sorry, but I still need time to myself. I've been through alot in the last five years/three weeks or however long you want to call it, and I can't concentrate on anything right now. I know I was there for a long time, but I don't remember anything from there. Not one thing. The only five things I remember are either stuck here with us, or related to me. Whatever you needed me for, I can't do it right now Linda. I'msorry."
As his words slurred together at the end, Kara could tell he was nervous, and really wanted to be left alone.

"I understand Bart. Come back to us... and me, when you're ready. I think I can speak for anyone that we miss you." She kissed him on the cheek and flew off back towards the fortress.

An idea forms in my mind.

"When I first came back to this world, I...visted the Watchtower. It was too damaged to support operations, but was still functioning on at least a basic level. Perhaps we can use what remains of the Tower to create the large-scale weapon you need. Along with the satellite's that are still functioning to act as a targeting system we may have the proper equipment." I continue my train of thought with what happens after implementing the plan. "Afterwards those of us with power rings can thaw out anything that needs to be when the time is right. Or, perhaps, convert the freeze platform into an energy-heating platform."

"Supposing your space station has a power source big enough to operate such a device, and your rings are powerful enough to complete complex re-arranging of large parts of the hull, this would be pheasible. A quick raid of STAR Labs will provide us a variety of the weapons necessary for conversion. Even a variety of sizes for more precise situations. What matters is that steps can be taken to eliminate these things before they take over."

Roman slowly opened his eyes. He could hear chopper blades whirling. Where was he?

"Sir?" Black Mask looked up to see one of his men.

"Wh-where are we?" he asked

"Heading back from black gate sir. You took a nasty hit so we got you out of there." Slowly, Roman rose.

"What about Joker?"

"We don't know sir."

A wide grin spread across Black Mask's face. Free. He was free of that mad man at last. They were headed back to Gotham. Roman could forget about this Unity crap. He didn't want anymore to do with it. It wasn't going to get to him.

The city was his for the taking. Heros everywhere were too distracted with Unity to care about Gotham. Now was the right time. Black Mask was going to get what was his. Gotham was about to enter a cold new age. The Black Age was here.

IC: Barb Gordon

The Batcave

The suit is put on display in all its batlike glory. Right beside the Robin suit that Jason used to wear. The inaccuracy of sight never struck me before like it does now as I stand before the two in the vast underground home that Bruce has made into his home.

There's a sense of finality that the costumes enamate. An end. As if put here for all to see and initiate sessions of reminiscising about what they used to be. But the fact of the matter is, and this is putting it very bluntly to; Jason's dead.

I'm not.

With an exitement the kind of which I haven't experienced in a while, I reach out. My cold fingertips touch the cold of the glass that stands between myself and the suit. I want to touch it. The palms of my hands spread out across the surface of the case, enveloping it as I envelop the idea o fit...the reality of this moment.

I open up the case and my hands enter to retrieve the material of clothing that has been the thing around which my life has always revolved around. The leather is cool...smooth and stretchy. The yellow of the gloves still withhold the faint stains which I suspect are blood.

The wearing of the costume doesn't take long. I enter the dressing rooms and strip off my clothing. Goosebumps erupt all across my flesh as I shake my head for what must be the hundredth time at Bruce's negligence of the fact that heating systems down here should be improved.

The material of it embraces my body as if like a second skin. My hands, long fingered and white slip into the gloves and become yellow with sharp blades protruding dangerously from the sides of my arms. The vivid red of my hair is only accentuated as my head disapeares into the pointy eared helmet. My eyes peep out from behind the blackeness of the mask against which the whitness of my freckle spotted face contrasts sharply. The garment flowing around my body is a bright yellow from the inside, matching the Bat insignia that is marked boldly across my breasts.

I take in a deep breath and step out into the cave again. Looking at the now empty glass case has me wondering briefly about Bruce and what his reaction would be at the sight of it. I walk towards the assortment of vehicles parked at the side. The Batmobiles are really something to behold but the cycles...

I walk around one and drape a leg across its leather seat. My hands feel out the shiny metal of the handles and a wide grin spreads across my face as I turn the ignition and it roars to life beneath me.

This is freedom.

I run Freeze's idea through my mind while he's speaking. There's something wrong about this. He's acting too nice. While he's not as bad as Joker or Two-Face, Freeze is, pun not intended, cold to the rest of the world. Normally, he doesn't really care about the world, he just wants to make people suffer as he has.

Then, if he's trying to freeze cities... This is a set-up. I can feel it. I mentally slap myself for going along with it. Even if it does work, there isn't much chance for the Unity to survive, without something to contain them, much like Nora's chamber. Sure, we survived something similar, but most of us are Green Lanterns and an individual who's spent most of his life being able to survive anything. Millions of normal people though...

I should lock him up somewhere right now. But, in the situation we're in, we'll need all the help we can get. Freeze would be a valuable asset, I just need to get this sattalite business over with and do something worth-while.

"Maybe instead of freezing the citizens, perhaps we should try to contain the cities themselves. Is it possible to make a dome of ice around the infected cities?"

The Red X said:
X lent against the near by wall "So what’s our next move? Do we attack Gothan and the resistance again... because from the looks of things that didn’t work so well last time”

"What do you suggest?" asked the unity

"The way i see it, is you tried taking on the resistance in a straight out battle before." X pointed to the rest of the group. "But why go after the drones when you should be attacking the nest"

X continued "We let them know we are coming so they can bring all their forces together in one place, plant a warhead in the city. Then we end this." He pulled his arm to towards his face and clenched his fist.

Your plan may yet hold merrit, but for now, we must play to our advantages. Red X and Garth Ranzz; the last time that the resistance fighters saw the both of you, you were allied with them. They are not aware of your current allegiance to me. I can give both of you a degree of mental shielding to protect this secret from Imra Ardeen - Saturn Girl.

The Unity could feel Garth's discomfort with that particular issue.

I understand your emotional conflict in this matter, Garth Ranzz, but it is a necessary factor. She will understand why you had to keep this secret from her when she finally joins us. And she will thank you.

Rudy rolled his eyes at this mushy crap. "Cut the mushy crap. Why don't I just take buddy's place?" Rudy said as he jerked his thumb towards Sparky, indicating him. "I can take 'em all by surprise when the time's right."

No, Raymond Jones. For now, you will stay here with me. It has come to my attention that there is a glaring flaw in your biology that must be remedied immediately, before I can allow myself to assign you to another mission.

Rudy slumped backwards into a chair with a huff.

For now, Garth and Red X are to infiltrate the resistance and learn of their plans, which will be broadcast back to myself. This is a crucial time for us, but I remain confident. Afterall, the rebellion are up against an entire world of my soldiers. It is only a matter of time before they fall.

I turn to Bruce. "Pains me to say this,"

I'm surprised by Guy's maturity with this. Perhaps his blueness is a step up.

"As I said earlier, if we can somehow just contain the cities, instead of potentially killing people by freezing them, it could work." Another idea forms in my head.

"Also, it's possible that we can cure a United person. If my guess is correct, the Unity basically blocks most of the brain from controlling itself. Perhaps if I can find the right nerve endings to loosen the block, while the United part of their brain would still be part, the people would at least be able to fight it.

"Freeze, as I said before, can this device of yours make a dome shape, simply contain the city instead of freezing the populace?"

"Wait... wait a minute..." I suddenly realise something. This doesn't happen often.

"Call me stupid, which i'm sure you all do behind my back anyhow," I look directly at Sinestro as I say this. "But we're trying to shut down the signal the Unity are broadcasting right?"

Batman nods.

"This piece of junk runs on the c**p!" I say pointing to my ring.

"Now, the hot telepath chick..." I try to remember her name. "***** Galore? doesn't matter, listen, can't she use my ring to identify the signal?"

Batman just stares.

"Well she's like in J'onn's league as a minde reader right?"

Batman gives me another nod.

"So can't she shut down th signal if she can identify the signal?"

Batman raises a eyebrow under his cowl; you can tell by the way it bunches up.

"Look I don't pretend to know what i'm talking about, but surely someone taht powerful can just... ya' know... cancel out the signal?"

I'm impressed. Gardner just logically came up with, what could be, a rather ingenious plan. Actually, I am more than impressed. I am completely astounded.

And then I remember, it is due to the ring effects, and not Gardner himself. And all is right with the universe again.

But the plan still has merit. And, as much as it pains me to admit it, I say so. "That could actually work. Or at least buy us time. But perhaps we should ask the telepath. Now," I say sarcastically, "how can we communicate with a powerful telepath from a great distance?"

Bruce gives me a cold, untrusting look as I arrive, and it's obvious to anyone
who knows him as well as I do, that he's taking mental inventory, no doubt checking if he has his K ring. Good, keep it Bruce, I think to myself, even I don't know if I'm 'free' from the Unity because it suits his plans.

The conversation turns from debating Freezes idea, to Guy (who's dressed in blue now, and claiming that his ring runs on Unity power, which I can't say I trust) suggests getting that telepath who was with Superboy to mentally shut down the Unity. That's when I jump in with a word of warning.

"I don't think that will work. This telepath, Saturn Girl, is surely powerful, but, as Batman can confirm, the Unity's power is immense. If she's compromised and taken by the Unity, Saturn Girl could potentially 'unify' people just by looking at them. Not exactly the best case scenario."

Clark interrupts my mantra, but it keeps me focused on something else.

"True, but it's possible she can trace the Unity's location, so we could at least fight it head-on."

"Well as long as i get paid,I don't matter how we do it" Answered X.
