The "World of Heroes" DC RPG Season V Signup/OOC Thread

Wieg, if you could hold off a bit on jumping in, I'll let you know when. I'd sort of like to do this on my own..then you can jump in and try to kill Deathstroke. ;)

That's fine. I was going to have Jay roam around aimlessly attacking thugs and escaped inmates, building up his anger.

Insert Zinda and Speedy in your exploits please. :)

Just a passing comment will do, nothing fancy.

Screen Name: CConn

Character you would like to play: The Detective Chimp

Powers: heightened intelligence, the ability to speak to all species of animals, and immortality.

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable): None

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:

1). I love his personality. His demeanor. I think that makes it really easy for me to write for him, and really characterize him well. At first glance, he may seem like just a stupid remnant from the '50s, but I'm very confident I can make him something more, something very worthwhile and unique.

2). One of the things I love about DC and his potential, is that he's just begging to be placed in a Noir setting and style. And I love Noir. The old detective movies and pulp fictions, it's all very dear to me, and I really want to use that effectively when RPG. Of course, DC isn't just about being a Noir Detective, he's also magical. And very involved in the DCU's magical community. And while I won't profess to be a huge fan of magic, it certainly does open up a ton of possibilities you just can't do with Superman or Batman. You can have a lot more craziness in the stories.

3). He has no fanbase, he has little history, and he has no respect. It's almost like painting on a blank canvas. I love the idea of being able to develop and build a character without having to worry about expectations or having to do something epic or anything like that. Detective Chimp can do anything because no one expects anything from him. It's great.

Write two complete sentences using proper English grammar explaining what you plan to do with the character you've chosen (i.e. What are your goals? Will you be doing anything different with the character than is usually seen?): I plan on to take Detective Chimp on a journey both thematically and emotionally. Introducing him first as a rather isolated noir character, then developing both his characterization and interaction with the more lighter and magical aspects of the DCU.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG: Probably no more than once. But I plan on making my posts sorta lengthy. Honestly though, I'm not a hundred percent sure of anything. I am new at this. Simply said, I'll try my best to make quality posts consistantly.

Color and font you plan on using for your characters speech (Might not be applicable but it makes the roster pretty): Olive Veranda.

How did you find out about this game, Recruitment thread/word of post/seeing the RPG OOC/IC thread? I had a passing thought that I wanted to RPG, Master Bruce logged on, and I told him I wanted in. After he got done laughing for a bit, he suggested this thread.

Please provide a small sample post with original content in the style that you plan to write your character in:

"I suppose you think I'm pretty funny. A talking chimp - and a pretty smart one, at that. But let me tell you something, the whole world's funny. With Supermen and boys and girls and dogs. Why don't anyone ever rip on Krypto? That's what I want to know. No, I'm no different than any schmuck who stumbled into the realm of magic.

"
Yeah, magic. That's the problem. Sure, Superman's can bend steel and shoot lasers out of his eyes, but there's a science behind that. A reason. There's no reason behind magic. No point.

"
And for a Detective - a keen mind with a ton of deductive reasoning - it's enough to drive you mad. I went mad. I was mad. For 30 or 40 years, actually. That's the one good thing about being immortal; you have more time to waste time. And believe me, doing nothing but drinking strong whiskey for a few decades is pretty much the most wasteful thing you can do. Just the bathroom visits alone take up half of your day."

A highly drunk and slightly puzzled bar occupant looks back at the nostalgic Chimp, "what the hell are you talking about?"

I played a lot before.

Please provide a small sample post with original content in the style that you plan to write your character in (must be at least 3 paragraphs long and contain at least one line of dialogue):

Gotham City, Downtown:

A mysterious figure wearing a trench coat and old 40’s hat looked up at the skyline of Gotham City in an alleyway, The GPD, the alleyways, cars, the metropolis was barley under control those skyscrapers were lucky enough to have something to stop them from falling.

The bat signal shined on the dark sky of Gotham.

The mysterious figure grunted

“Him”

The figure flipped a coin and lit a cigarette

He walked along the alleyway,

“He can barley do the city any good.”

He takes the cigarette from his mouth.

“And what does it need?”

He grabs his hat to reveal one side scared the other fine

“Balance!”

Where was Detective Chimp sooner? I would've loved Dr.Fate to run afoul of Chimp, but I gotta work on wrapping everything up. I've been wasting so much time already.

Would it be wrong of me to post apps for some new characters before I finish with the ones I already have?

Yes, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Alright. Well I guess I just gotta hope that no one applies for Superboy and Animal Man before I get the chance to finish with Mr.Miracle and Dr.Fate.

Of course now that I said that, someone will apply for those characters just to spite me.

Character you would like to play: Jim Gordon

Powers: None

Group your character is aligned with (if applicable):
Gotham City Police Department (currently retired)

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:

1) He's the character I originally wanted to join as, before The Joker cropped up.

2) I've always been a big fan of the character of Commissioner Gordon, and think he's a crucial part of the Batman mythos.

3) I don't think anybody has played him before. Though I enjoyed using him as an NPC in previous seasons.

Write two complete sentences using proper English grammar explaining what you plan to do with the character you've chosen (i.e. What are your goals? Will you be doing anything different with the character than is usually seen?):

With Gordon, I'd like to try something different. I want to explore the idea that not all heroes are "super", and make Gordon a convincing, engaging protagonist.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG:

I'll be honest here. As Gordon, I may not post every day. He is probably going to be secondary to The Joker, as the nature of the character means he isn't going to get involved in every arc. But if I DO get caught up in an arc, I hope to post as him at least once a day.

How did you find out about this game, Recruitment thread/word of post/seeing the RPG OOC/IC thread?:

I've been around since Season 2.

Please provide a small sample post with original content in the style that you plan to write your character in (must be at least 3 paragraphs long and contain at least one line of dialogue):

"There ain't nothing worse than getting old."

They say talking to yourself is the first sign of madness. Jim Gordon didn't know what it was. Loneliness? Boredom? Senile dementia?

"Yep..."

Chuckling sardonically to himself, Gordon pasted the latest news article on Batman's nocturnal exploits into his scrap-book. Barbara had gotten him a fancy laptop for his last birthday, and she'd tried to explain to him countless times over the years that he could find any news article past and present on archives posted on the Internet. Really, these old scrap-books were totally redundant now, a waste of time. Well, old habits die hard. And these days, all he had was time.

Gordon gently closed the scrap-book, and leaned back on the sofa. He winced as his bones creaked painfully. It had been a couple of years now, but he still felt sore all over from his most recent near-death experience with The Joker. He was on the loose again. Great. Gordon would be sleeping with one eye open, and one hand on the gun he always kept under his pillow. In this city, and with his history, he had to.

Adjusting his glasses on the bridge of his nose, Gordon picked up the remote off the coffee table and flicked on the television:

"...another mass escape from Arkham Asylum. Jonathan Crane, aka The Scarecrow, and Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face. The cause of the explosion that allowed these dangerous inmates to be freed is currently..."

Gordon flicked the channel over to NBC. "Heroes" was on. Why should he dwell on what they talked about on the news? These days, it was too depressing. And besides, it wasn't his job to worry about it anymore. He was retired.

Sometimes, that was a hard fact to accept. Retirement. In his younger days, Gordon had always thought of retirement as sending old horses out to pasture before you put a bullet in their head and turned them into glue. It had seemed so far away then. But after nearly 30 years of dedicated service on the force, after so much pain and loss and heartbreak, he'd decided enough was enough. But even now, every so often, those old cop instincts would come back. His old bloodhound's nose would get a sniff of a case, and he'd want in on the action.

But then he'd realise that he wasn't the Police Commissioner of Gotham anymore. He was just an old man. Put out to pasture. But really, he was fine with that. He'd earned a break. And he got to see Barbara more too, which was nice. Yeah, that's what retirement was. Nice. Gordon tried to switch off, and enjoy the show:

"This quest, this need to solve life's mysteries. In the end, what does it matter when the human heart can only find meaning in the smallest of moments? They're here. Among us, in the shadows, the light, everywhere. Do they even know yet?"

Gordon let out another sigh and switched the television off. His mind just didn't want to settle. Maybe he just needed to shut everything off for a little while. Taking off his glasses and laying them on the coffee table, Gordon propped his feet up on the sofa, and closed his eyes. He found himself taking naps during the day more and more often now. Well, he could afford to now.

"Hey, retirement has it's perks."

Approved, Keyser.

(Never once did I think we'd get both James Gordon and Detective Chimp in this RPG. And on the same day, no less...)

Sigh....I believe it's been over two since I last posted as him so I'm reapplying as him. C'mon Q I have other stories that I want to tell with John.

Screen Name: Watchman

Character you would like to play: John Constantine

Powers: John has a vast knowledge on the occult and other magical subjects. He has the ablily to conjure magic. Also he is one cunning bastard.

Three reasons why you have chosen that character:

1) I really wanted to try something different

2) One of my favorite characters in the DC universe

3) Just wait until you read the situation I put him in

Write two complete sentences using proper English grammar explaining what you plan to do with the character you've chosen (i.e. What are your goals? Will you be doing anything different with the character than is usually seen?): I will be putting John in a situatuion that he hasn't face before and it's going to take more than wits and magic to survive. It would be nice to play as a normal, well kind of a normal, human in a world of heroes.

How many times do you intend on posting a DAY IN the RPG: At least once depends on school work

How the hell do I keep turning up like these? Right now I stand in Jimmy Cats, you know big time London crime boss, with some wanker pointing a gun at my head.

"Save him now!" You see ol' Jimmy here was looking for the secrets of immortality. Instead of finding them he was possessed by a demon...ancient Sumerian me thinks.

"Don't worry mate he's in good hands" Matter o' fact Jimmy is good as dead. The demon has dug too deep into him and no way is Jimmy coming back. "Now get me a cellphone"

"A cellphone...?"

"Yes a cellphone I need something to contact the um... sprits. It's not like the telle where everybody gathers around holding each other's hands. Now get me a cellphone!" He hands me his cellphone. This is going to be easier than I thought. "Now leave I must must be alone. You don't want this thing to go inside of you do ya?" They leave the room fast while I start to dial.

" 'ello" a very tierd voice answers

"Chas mate it's me" I whisper

"John is that you?"

"No it's Keanu bloody Reeves. I need your car"

"Oh what is it now John? Do you have any idea what time it is?!"

"Yes I do but I met some guys of the unsavory type and I need a ride out of here"

"Ugh Ok, Ok, just tell me where you are" I give him the address and wait by the window

"Everything ok in there?" a shout came from outside the room I didn't say anything cause Chas just pulled up. I open the window and jump onto a nearby branch and climb down the tree. I dive into the cab. I light one up as Chas takes off.

Hmm..Keyser might be throwing my plans off a bit... ;)

Karem-Knight
Just to let you know Two-Face has been in Arkham for about the last year or so after Black Canary beat him and his right hand man defected to help Dinah overthrow him. :)

Sigh....I believe it's been over two since I last posted as him so I'm reapplying as him. C'mon Q I have other stories that I want to tell with John.
You're accepted.

And thanks a bunch, Spike, for the Brainiac pics. I appreciate them man. :)

Keyser, Spike, sorry for the hold-up on Robin. I had a post all typed out and the Hype ditched it...

That's my first Gordon post up! Tell me what you think!

Oh, and for RPG newcomers, here's some highlights of when Commissioner Gordon was last involved in the RPG, back in Season 3:

Jim Gordon was standing on the roof of the GCPD. He had retired as the Police Commissioner of Gotham City, but he still found himself hanging around here a lot. He told himself that it was because they needed him. But maybe it was him that needed them.

Gordon sighed, absently placing his hand on the Bat-Signal that he had once operated so often. They say that the number one killer of people is retirement. And maybe that's why he wanted to keep in the loop. He hated to say it, but he was finally feeling old. He couldn't run or jog any distance without feeling that pang in his chest, his old, weary heart siezing up.

Gordon supposed that dying of a heart attack wasn't all that bad. With all the heartbreak he'd been put through, it would be somewhat fitting. And a lot of it had been caused by The Joker. That monster had paralysed Barbara, and murdered Sarah. He wondered why he hadn't killed The Joker already. Was it a sign of his inner strength, or a display of weakness?

"I thought I'd find you here," came a voice from behind him.

Gordon turned round, and found himself face to face with the very monster he had been thinking about. The Joker grinned deviously.

"I've been watching you up here for a while now," he continued, "Harley dropped me off up here when we saw you enter the GCPD Building. I know you too well, Jimbo. I knew you'd come up here to sulk. Think about all the old memories that haunt you."

"What do you want, Joker?" asked Gordon, his voice aching with restraint.

"Why, you, old man," replied The Joker, smiling maliciously, "You see, after Harley dropped me off, she picked up the department's secretary. Unless you get on the chopper with me, without a struggle, the poor girl will be taking a head-dive off the chopper! HA HA!"

The two enemies stared at each other in hateful silence for close to a minute. Finally Gordon spoke.

"Fine, I'll come with you," he said, "Just don't hurt Carla."

The Joker nodded, approaching Gordon. He put his hand on his shoulder as they both stared out at the Gotham skyline.

"Gotham City, Jimbo," sighed The Joker, "Enjoy it while you can. Though with all the pain this city has put you through, I say you should be glad to see it burn, HA HA!"

"Don't touch me," muttered Gordon.

Shrugging, The Joker took his hand off Gordon's shoulder. Just then, harley landed the chopper on the rooftop. Walking side by side, almost as if they were old friends, The Joker and Jim Gordon climbed into the chopper together.

"Let her go," said Gordon, looking at his terrified secretary.

The Joker nodded, shoving Carla out of the chopper and onto the rooftop.

"Go tell your friends in the station what happened to Gordon!" he shouted, "They're going to wish they had said goodbye! HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

And with that, the chopper took off into the night.

The Joker opened the front door, holding it open for Barbara Gordon as she stepped inside. They both walked through the dark hallway, passing a cluttered room full of strange looking toys and gadgets. Joker led the way up the stairs.

"Careful not to step on the 7th stair!" he called, gingerly leaping from the 6th to the 8th step.

Once he got to the top of the stairs, he stopped in front of a bust of an oil merchant from the 18th century. Thoughtfully, he stuck his finger up the nose of the bust. He pressed the button inside, opening a panel in the wall to reveal his secret living quarters.

"After you," he said, allowing Barbara in front of him.

Once she passed, he locked a pair of handcuffs on her, tying her hands behind her back. He then pushed her forward into his office, the wall closing behind them. There was a messy looking desk, which didn't fit in with the rest of the room, which looked more like a backelor pad than an office. There was a roaring fire, an animal-skin rug, and a large sofa.

And there, in the centre of the room, was Jim Gordon, tied to a chair.

"Awwww, a family reunion!" laughed The Joker tauntingly, "How touching. HA!"

The Joker spun round on his heels, and walked across the room to behind his desk.

"Now that you're both here, I'd saw it's time for a little history lesson," said The Joker, sitting down behind the desk, "I'm sure you have heard of the gulags. The travelling prisons in Communist Russia. I may not seem much of a history buff, but when it comes to the history of pain and torture, I'm all ears, and all smiles! HA HA!"

The Joker took a sledgehammer out from under the desk, putting it down in front of him.

"In these gulags, the Russians kept thieves, murderers and, worst of all, army deserters. And in all that time travelling around, in the unbearable cold of the Russian wilderness, they got kinda bored. So they came up with all kinds of interesting torture techniques to try out on their inmates. And one of my favourites is called 'Playing the xylophone.'"

The Joker stood up, walking back round in front of the desk. He picked up the hammer, and started cradling it in his hands.

"The bones in the prisoner's spine would be methodically cracked, one after the other," explained The Joker with relish, leering at Barbara when he said spine, "They'd start down at the coccyx, then move upward through the lower vertebrae."

As he said this, he ran his boney fingers up along barbara's back, showing her the bones that would be broken, one by one.

"Now, this was not a rapid process," he continued, "No, they would only break a single bone at a time. Then they'd wait for that bone to heal before breaking the next one. Once the last one was healed, they'd start again. They could play some pretty impressive scales on that xylophone. HA HA!"

The Joker sat down cross-legged on the floor, in front of the Gordons. He slowly tapped the sledgehammer on the ground.

"And now, I feel like playing some scales of my own," he cackled menacingly, "But I'm not entirely without compassion. I'll let you two decide between you who goes first. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

To be continued in the next post...

The Joker smiled knowingly.

"Misdirection, my dear," he explained, "It's all about...misdirection."

With a click of his finger, a Joker card apeared in his hand.

"It's why I kidnapped you two happy campers," he chuckled, "Now the do-gooders won't be thinking about finding the antimatter, they'll be thinking about saving YOU. Misdirection, distraction, DECEPTION. And when Batman finds your dead bodies, that's going to be one hell of a distraction! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

He paced around the room, walking behind Barbara and Jim Gordon. After a dramatic pause, he leaned in over Barbara's ear.

"The trick is to do what people least expect," The Joker cackled, "They'll be looking for something odd, something out of place. That's why I encased the antimatter bomb inside something familiar, something...friendly. I replaced the memorial to Thomas and Martha Wayne from the building's main hall with a hollow duplicate. It has a lead exterior, so even Superman couldn't spot it with his fancy-pants X-Ray vision. And inside? The antimatter! HA HA!"

The Joker laughed at his own brilliance. The simplicity of it - it was perfect!

"I knew the hiding place had to have SOMETHING to do with the Waynes," he continued, "They're my new favourite family - I like them even beter than the Gordons now! HAHAHAHAHA! At first, I was going to put the antimatter bomb in the grave of Thomas Wayne, but you know, digging up Brucie's parents? Been there, done that..."

The Joker trailed off, his eyes glazing over. Suddenly, his mad eyes brightened with malicious glee.

"You know what? I just had a funny thought..."

The Joker spun round on his feet, bringing the sledgehammer crashing down on Jim Gordon's left hand. Gordon screamed in pain, almost drowning out the sound of cracking bones.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh God, you should...HAHAHA...see your face! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA........."

It happens so fast that I am barely able to register it. What my eyes witness next makes my blood boil to unbearable temperatures. Dad's angusihed cries reverberate around the room, his form shaking heavily as blood oozes out the mess of cracked bones that must be his left hand, perched atop the wooden armrest.

"DAD!" I try to shift towards him, my blood singing in my ears.I want to help him...ease his pain but the metal cuffs dig deeper, painfully into the skin of my wrists and all my attempts of breaking free are futile. I am frustrated beyond control and the hurt of seeing him this way makes evrything so much more worse.

The only thing louder than Dad's groans of agony is Joker's cackling laugh...echoing and bouncing about the room...making me almost sick with disgust and loathing.

With the amount of strength previously alien to me, I sping to my feet and lunge at the Joker. My body topples his over, making us both crash heavily against the floor. I feel myself losing control. I want to kill him! Hurt him like he's hurt dad all his life by doing everything possible, even murdering off Sarah! All methods of torture flash through my reeling mind and I struggle against him, helpless with my arms tied behind my back and roar against his face, " YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS!!!!!!"

The Joker was taken aback by Barbara's sudden assault. She couldn't punch him, but she'd already knocked him to the ground, and was doing plenty of damage - kicking and biting like crazy.

"Ouch! Ow!" he cried in pain, "Can't you...take a joke?"

The Joker grabbed hold of the sledgehammer, jabbing it into Barbara's gut to knock her off of him. He scrambled to his feet, seething with anger at being taken off guard. How dare she? Didn't she know she was in the presence of The Clown Prince Of Crime? he was going to have to teach her a lesson.

He lifted the sledgehammer, as if he was about to hit Barbara. But then he turned round, and swung the sledgehammer upward, catching Gordon right under the chin. The chair he was tied to went flying backwards, and Gordon landed hard on the floor. Looking down at Gordon, a fiery madness ablaze in his hateful eyes, The Joker hit him with the hammer again. And again. And again.

He paused for a moment, panting with exhaustion, his hair dishevelled. He wasn't smiling. Not anymore. Then his head snapped up, as he locked eyes with Barbara.

"DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SCREW WITH ME!?!" he screamed, "DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS, YOU STUPID ****E!!!?"

I thought I knew cruelty.

I thought, I was one of the few in the world who knew the extend of cruelty the Joker was capable of. I thought I knew the way his twisted mind worked in its full extend. I thought after all I've been through with him, I could stand anything else he could throw at me.

I was wrong.

Cruelty is watching a mad man beating my father's familiar form into pulp in front of my eyes. It is watching the crimson specks spraying out as he continues to pummel the hammer at my father's body. Cruelty is watching as the life was being beaten out of my father's body as his agonizing goans fill up the air. Cruelty is the fact that I can watch while not being able to do anything.

I lay sprawled against the floor,my cheek pressed against the soft carpet. I can taste the metallic tang of my own blood bubbling in my mouth. My stomach aches so bad because of the way he striked the sledgehammer in his hands into it. My wrists are so sore the burning sensation is almost unbareable.

The bleary lopsided view of the ornately furnished room is bathed in orange light. Dad's groans go softer...Joker's eyes are on my form now. He looks as tall as ever from down here...Hate enamates from every fibre of his being...possibly even stronger than the amount of the emotion I harbor for him...

"DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SCREW WITH ME!?!" he screamed, "DO YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENS, YOU STUPID ****E!!!?" I can hear his words, they bounce off me...almost muffled as I feel myself losing conciousness...I can feel myself welcoming, for once, the numbing sensation spreading through my being as I shift my watery eyes up to look at him.Not really taking in the sight of the evil face leering down at me...

I swore to myself after he crippled me that I won't ever let myself be broken by him again...

I was wrong.

The Joker's rage soon turned to a dark satisfaction when he looked at Barbara Gordon. She was lying on the ground, and was staying down. He had broken her. He'd hit where it hurt the most - through her father. And now he had her right where he wanted her. The wicked grin slowly returned to his face.

"I just killed your daddy dearest," he cackled, dragging the sledgehammer with him towards Barbara, "And you know what? If you hadn't blind-sided me, he might have lived a little while longer. So, it's all your fault! HA HA!"

The Joker kicked Barbara in the gut, rolling her over onto her stomach. He stood over her, resting the hammer on her coccyx, the lowest bone on her spine.

"I just thought you'd want to know that," he hissed, "Now, I think it's time to start playing the xylophone..."

Suddenly, there was a deafening bang. Then, a stinging pain shot through The Joker's arm, causing him to let the sledgehammer drop to the floor. He put two and two together, and realised he'd been shot.

"Oh," he said, as he stumbled backwards, falling against the wall.

Holding his injured arm, The Joker looked up at where the gunshot had come from. His eyes widened in shock, as if he'd seen a ghost. For a second, he thought he WAS seeing a ghost.

Jim Gordon. He was alive. Standing right there in the centre of the room. His shattered face was a crimson mask of blood, with one eye swollen shut. His left arm hung dead at his side, and he stood on shaky legs. Sheer will and determination were al that were keeping him going. Somehow, he had loosened the ropes tying him to the chair, and struggled to his feet. And now he had The Joker's gun.

"Stay the hell away from my daughter, you sick bastard!" he finally said, almost ni a whisper.

For what felt like an eternity, the two men stared at each other. And then The Joker started to laugh. He threw his head back and let it come out in wild, violent bursts.

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You're almost as hard to kill as Batsy, Jimbo!" he said, "But you're just as pathetic as he is. You don't have the guts to kill me."

Then, with a flick of the wrist, The Joker threw a stack of playing cards at Gordon. Gordon raised his arm, shielding his face from their razor-sharp edges. But the distraction was enough for The Joker to tackle Gordon to the ground, knocking the gun across the room.

The Joker and Gordon wrestled on the floor, desperately trying to reach the gun.

And then Barbara intervenes, and distracts Joker long enough for Batman to save the day. Gordon goes to hospital, and that brings us up to date...

Well, I'm officially dropping Hal (I think I mentioned before about dropping him, but can't remember) I'm gonna hang onto Kyle for now, but I'm gonna kinda try and look for a smaller storyline for him, or go off on his own. Anyone interested in doing something with Ion?

Perhaps Bart and Kyle could meet up? Them both being brainchildren of the 90's and all.
