Paramount Ends Relationship with Cruise
Source: Variety, Wall Street Journal August 22, 2006

Variety confirmed today that Paramount Pictures is ending its 14-year relationship with Tom Cruise's production company, Cruise/Wagner Productions. Cruise and Paula Wagner will be exiting the studio as they forge ahead with plans to create an independently financed production company. Wagner told the trade that Cruise/Wagner is in discussions with several distributors to find a home for their films, which will be self-financed.

The move comes after months of speculation about the future of their Paramount-based company as the Aug. 31 expiration of their current contract approached. Negotiations said that talks were still underway as of a few days ago, however Paramount executives didn't feel they could reach final terms they were comfortable with.

The current Paramount regime, led by chairman Brad Grey, was hoping to cut back on Cruise/Wagner's overall deal, long known as one of the most expensive production pacts in town.

Viacom Inc. (parent company of Paramount) Chairman Sumner Redstone told the Wall Street Journal that they were not renewing the deal because of his off-screen behavior. "As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal," Redstone said. "His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

On the flip side, however, Wagner said that setting up an independent production company "is a dream of Tom and mine." She challenged Redstone's assertion that Cruise's behavior had cost the studio ticket sales, pointing out that the star's movies have made the studio a huge amount of money.

I just noted this in the casting thread. All I can say is ... THANK GOD!

I agree. IF Cruise would have been chosen I wouldn't whine about it. I'd support him. Yeah Paramount isn't he studio but the distributor has ties to the studio and it's 1st look directors like Favreau and Paramount, Leterrier and Universal, etc...

I'm a little surprised, as Tom Cruise is still a huge draw and talented actor, but right now he's a joke to many people, so Paramount cutting ties shouldn't surprise anyone, its would be a shame if their cutting ties over Cruise's mistakes and not over his talent.

my sentiments exactly in shellheads movi7e we want to see IRON MAN not CULT BOY

Tom Cruise life seems to being going dowhn hilll.........

was he ever a 'real' choice or was it just Snakes on a Plane?

Prior to the circus of the last year and a half some people mentioned him but he was gonna be an unpopular choice with fans right or wrong...

I guess there is only one crazy thing left that Tom Cruise can pulled. Coming out of the closet FINALLY. He would still be a good choice for Iron Man in IMO. He's a good actor but has a really bad personality.

man.... I guess this also 99.9% rules Tony Stark jumping on couches out. Darn.

well I guess we can toss this away then :D.

Considering that Marvel is making Iron Man and not Paramount should not be the factor to rule out Tom Cruise.

The factor that had Favreau saying that Cruise will most likely not get the role should be the factor to end specualtion (which has already been said by the way)

Mostly true hippie however Paramount directors have first looks at films even when they're just the distributor. Marvel can of course say yea or nay but if there's a director under Paramount or an actor under Paramount that Marvel wants...it makes it real easy. Favreau was at Paramount, Leterrier at Universal, etc...

Why are some people convinced Cruise is gay?

Tom Cruise ALL the way for Tony Stark...believe me...the money guys would go thru the roof, if Cruise is attached. Sure, you've gotta pay him, but Marvel might have some leverage, with Cruise NEEDING a big hit to get back on top, and wipe some of his current troubles off the minds of moviegoers.

Because there are some morons in the world that don't see that haveing sex with women makes you not gay.

Probably a good thing --- even though, admittedly, Tom Cruise could have played a fantastic Tony Stark, and the role is right up his alley... the fact is that all the negative publicity surrounding him these days would have hurt the movie, and as a somewhat lesser known character than some of the big guns like Spidey or Hulk, Iron Man doesn't need that kind of negative push.

WOTW was a domestic dissapointment as was MI3. They made money at the box office but not as much as expected. MI3 was actually an awesome film though IMO WOTW was a major miss as far as quality. I'm not gonna join in the lynch mob on Tom Cruise but I don't want him for the role at all. If he gets it I'd support him but I pretty confident he won't. It'd be a total waste of money and it'd turn into a Tom cruise movie more than a Iron Man movie, then we have to deal with his lunacy for sequels. Oh god.

I thought Cruise would of been a good Tony Stark but after seeing him now with all the outbursts and weird acts I am glad there is little to no chance in hell he will be our Iron Man.
