Endgame Thor/God of Thunder - Chris Hemsworth

MCU movies and CBM always made fun of its characters - Tony always had some colorful nicknames for others etc. I thought them making fun of him was mean but that's because I luv him lol it was consistent with treatment of characters in MCU and I didn't think he was singled out

Is it classy, no, but I wouldn't say they were fat shaming him. But come on he was not in a healthy state so even if they were is that a bad thing? He should listen to mom and eat that salad

fat shaming? lol come on...I'm a big guy myself and I got none of that from this. I found it funny.

People need to get some thicker skin...(get it ;) :D)

Agreed on the thicker skin part. They're not making fun of someone with a thyroid disorder or someone who has been fighting obesity and weight gain all of his life, they are ribbing (heh...ribs) a guy who looked liked he was carved out of wood the last time they saw him, and now he looks like the very basement dwellers he mocks over his headset while playing Fortnite.

If they had been doing this to Ned from Spider-Man, then I would even call shenanigans on the whole thing...and I am the LEAST concerned with what the PC Police say about anything.

I am curious if he'll be skinny again in GotG 3. I think I could see it happening, just because it would aggravate Quill to no end...which would be funnier. Also, after a year of him out in space adventuring, he would more than likely lose that weight...
...on the other hand, seeing he and Groot play video games together would be hilarious!

It really wasn't. The moment he broke down was really affecting.

At first it's played for humor. He tries to play it off like everything is fine.

I'm not saying there's no value in what was shown, but it's heavily weighted toward making fun of his situation. Even after the sequence in question.

I disagree. I thought Thor breaking down "don't say his name" and his scene with Frigga were very empathetic towards him. It doesn't matter if he gets plenty of funny moments in the movie, the heart and the compassion is there

Keywords here, "looks like".

It's funny the first time. When you make it a running gag, it stops being funny, and becomes in poor taste.

I get that there's an element to "Ha, you used to look like THIS and now you look like THIS", but whether they're inviting the audience to mock him because he was in peak Chris Hemsworth shape before and is now fat or not, the audience is being invited to mock him because is now fat.

People are now saying it's okay that they fat shamed because they found it funny and because there was a deeper angle to it in the midst of the fat shaming.

But it's still essentially fat shaming.

But it wasn't a running joke that he was 'fat'. It happened few times - "melted ice cream" and War Machine's comment about what's coursing through his veins. The rest of it was funny imho not because of his weight but because of the Lebowski/laid back/wears shades indoors appearance

So it's ok that they fat shamed because it stopped after a while?

Come on now.

There were better, more sensitive ways to handle it.

I mean, it didn't offend me, I put it in quotes because yeah the PC culture can get a bit much

but being 2019, it's considered rather uncouth to not be "woke" or whatever, so it's surprising they went that direction... like guard said, making A joke about it is one thing, but to have people calling him chubbs and telling him to eat a salad all movie is kind of making a joke out of somebody who is dealing with some s***, which is a criticism people have made about several Marvel films, that they can be a bit light and breezy about things that should be sort of serious

It was no more of fat shaming than Rocket and Drax making fun of Quill in IW. It's not about him being 'fat' it's about the change in his appearance all together.

And again, like it was pointed out, it's not like he has diabetes or something

LOL If I changed like that and my mom saw me she would tell me to eat a salad too and not in a kind
Rene Russo's way of saying it :D

No he had clinical depression and PTSD
And that was one joke at Quill's expense when he was clearly still in great shape, it was ironic

Whatever Thor is hot always, Pratt is not hot ever :lmao:

I thought Thor's breakdown was the most affecting moment in the movie and felt most real so I disagree with any claims about no depth or shaming or whatever

It's about him being fat. We all know it. There aren't a comparative number or degree of jokes about his long hair and beard. There are a lot of jokes about him being chubby and out of shape.

And again, like it was pointed out, it's not like he has diabetes or something

So it's ok to make fun of him for being fat because he has control over it?

No, you're right, it's not like he had diabetes...he seems to have a serious mental condition/state of mind.

So they're basically poking fun of both his obesity and his mental state.

It's funny. At first. But it's also insensitive, and the ongoing joke really has no place in a superhero movie.

Never said there was no depth, and when they took it seriously it was indeed fantastic

but having dealt with depression issues myself, and associated weight gain
If someone told me I looked like melted Ice Cream I woulda slit their damned throat

OK well that is your opinion. I both laughed and felt compassion and understanding for him but if you were so profoundly offended then that's your view and I neither have the power nor interest in changing that.

I also dealt with depression and weight gain...hell I'm going through it now lol...I still didn't get bothered by this. AT ALL if anything it helped.

I however am really into self deprecating humor so different strokes for different folks.

I don’t think people would’ve hated Thor’s arc as much if
it hadn’t been played mostly for laughs. There are moments where you feel the weight of his depression (no pun intended), but they’re vastly overshadowed by jokes.

I found it funny Thor apparently drinks Irn Bru. An odd but of product placement, bit then it has been claimed to be a hangover remedy.

I had some medical issues and through the course of treatment, I put on 60lbs. My mother straight up asked me when my baby was due when she saw how much weight I had put on.

The underlying issue isn't the fat shaming for me, it's the trivialization of PTSD.

We saw that in Iron Man 3. To some extent all of those characters suffer because of what happened. This is a CBM movie. Just how serious do people want those issues explored in something that is PG 13 blockbuster?

Come on, this is isn't a serious drama, adjust your expectations a bit

There's nothing outrageous about Thor's characterisation or treatment in the film. Not to normal people anyway.

I think you can be a normal person and have a negative opinion of his arc. Let’s not get crazy. :funny:

But if you’re not going to seriously address the serious problems your characters are facing, why bother including them in the first place? I think we’re past the point of saying, “It’s just a comic book movie, don’t think about it too hard.”

The Russo’s could’ve gone in a different direction, but they didn’t. So whatever the fallout is (and it seems mostly positive, but still mixed) is on them.

Because if you don't include them it's basically a cartoon with only happy people doing happy things. Things like what Thor is going through makes him more relatable, human and through that likable
