So in the 1500 years that Thor has been around, he was only truly "mighty" for two of those years?

Sounds pathetic to me.

I for one am glad to read those rants because it means so many users have, apparently, never experienced a profound depression

Preach!

Thor had JUST lost his Dad, who he was closest to, found out he had an evil sister, had to kill her after all his comrades in arms, save ONE were killed by her, he then became king of Asgard for like, 10 minutes after seeing his homeland destroyed (by his own hand), and then a powerful being shows up, whoops him, kills half of the few remaining people he has left, including his best friend and his brother (the ONLY family he has left, by the way), and THEN, on his quest for vengeance, he is the one who didn't go for the killing blow because he wanted to mock his foe...only to cost the universe half of everyone.

YEAH, he has a reason to kill Thanos, hole up, and just exist in a state of depression. I've seen people lose one person and sink that low, and he lost EVERYONE, with the exception of his fellow Avengers, and a handful of Asgardians. The fact that he didn't throw Stormbreaker and have it come back and ram into his own heart and kill himself is amazing. Most people would have. He had an obligation he felt to at least be there for his people should the need arise, and he wasn't totally useless in a fight, obviously.

Man, it must be great to live in an ivory tower where nothing ever goes wrong...

This gif didn’t age well. :D
He’s the dude now. That whole interaction plays now in Quail’s favor. :D

I have a feeling Thor is gonna show up next movie with his perfect abs again, and everyone is gonna give Quill flack for his inability to lose weight.

Okay my turn to rant. It could upset Thor fans so you may not want to read on.

This is bad. They may as well put Darryl the accountant in his house telling him the kingdom finances are a mess, bonds are defaulted and the IMF isn’t going to pump more money not even as humanitarian relief for a few more laughs.

There is a saying, when the going gets tough, the toughs .. whatever doesn’t kill you makes you ..... never mind. Yeah half of the people disappeared because of whatever he didn’t do but there are survivors left who need their leader. Turning his back on them and holing himself up, becoming a melted ice cream is a sign of weakness for a 15 year olds not a “hero” of 1,500 years old who have been through it all. No he is definitely not fit for a king; criticizing Valkyrie when she turned her back when she didn’t even have a kingdom to lead is hypocritical.

Any redemption arc for this buffoon to win me back will be long and hard, and until then, go away. Don’t come back.

Rants over. Back to normal channel.
You simply fail to understand the weight of his guilt. He literally feels DIRECTLY responsible for the deaths of half of all life in the universe! The words of Thanos, "You should have gone for the head," have been haunting him...
He even tells the other Avengers, "I went for the head," after killing Thanos. Then, when that proves fruitless, he sinks even deeper. He feels utterly useless. I'd wager he plays back in his mind, "I killed that bastard and it changed nothing." Does it make him a bit of a hypocrite for doing what Valkyrie did, yeah. Does he find a way to work through it, he does.

You also don't really seem to understand how depression works. You seem to think there's some sort of age limit on it. Like it's just something you can shrug off. I wish it was that easy. I also hope you NEVER have to deal with it in any real capacity.

That’s not what I think the problems with this version 3.0 Thor but I’m not going to debate about this anymore with so many depression experts who have experience all stages and forms of depressions here when my issue isn’t about him having to deal with depression. It’s kind of you know depressing. Like something you all so know well that I have NEVER had to deal with. Actually no, I never had to use an ax and missed the head, I usually use my barehands. :)

Yeah, your point was pretty indefensible.

I’m not even defending. It’s a movie and how I feel about it no one need to defend that. At least I’m not passive aggressive about others opinions.

Okay, my opinion on Thor was, it was pretty hilarious...because I can now cosplay as Thor...just need to let the beard get really out of control...and grow out the hair. And now PUT ON weight...

*Sigh* Too light or too heavy....always a bridesmaid, never a thunder god.

I do have to admit, it's nice being able to finally say I'm in better shape than Thor.

Quill must be stoked, doesn't have to feel inadequate anymore

Lol, well at least he's not the chubby one anymore

Thor has had “arguably” the best shape in the MCU for the last 9 years. Hell more like 1500+ years of his life, he lost everything and basically everyone he loved... Can’t he drown his sorrows in a few beers, comfort food and some fun with his friends? Also 5 years for him is probably equivalent to a few months for everyone else.

I feel it’s totally understandable his physical and mental state after the worst time in his life.

I wonder how much time passed between Thor losing Odin and him knowing that the Infinity Stones where destroyed by Thanos. A 1500 years God losing everything in what amounts to probably a couple of weeks or so is just nuts. How much would that be in human years? Hours? Days?

When one puts stuff into perspective it’s pretty messed up what he had to endure.

Yeah, his story fully worked for me
It was just the level of it, how jiggly it was, how ridiculous he looked in his suit
if it was a small potbelly it'd be fine

but instead, he was, as one of my friends put it "The Nutty Profe-Thor"

I think the issue with Thor's portrayal is not that he ends up how he ends up.

I have a friend with depression who ended up looking that way in much less than five years. It's a very, very real phenomenon.

The state Thor is in is understandable. The problem is that within the film, it's not really done to draw attention to how depression can affect people, how to support them when they reach that point, etc. I think there's one line where The Hulk asks Thor "Are you okay?" and even that is kind of played for humor.

In a lot of ways, it's a joke at the expense of the overweight and the mentally ill/depressed. I just don't think that's okay in a superhero movie, and I don't think it was handled with any care within the film.

Now, if they stick with this somehow...if Thor embraces his new persona/image, and they play with "Quill STILL can't compete", then it could work out okay. If he goes back to being buff Thor...meh.

I'm not a believer in his dramatic range, but Hemsworth is a star at comedic range. He is insanely funny.

It really wasn't. The moment he broke down was really affecting.

But yeah, being 2019 and all, I thought it was a strange choice to be "fat-shaming" a character all movie, especially given the stereotypes about the audience for this film
