Endgame Thor/God of Thunder - Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth potentially returning for more films as Thor should not serve as an excuse to justify his poor outing in "Endgame" imho.

I seriously doubt that Marvel will be able to dish out another film that will rival what "Endgame" has achieved and have Thor in it.

If there was ever a time to let loose with Thor, EG is where it needed to happen. Yes, Thor is not the main star and his story may not be over but I can think of several ways that could have made him actually shine in the film and not look useless.

Thor is really the one hero that this film did not need.

When I saw the movie the first time, Thor's arc was jarring. I didn't expect it at all. But as I thought more about it and watched it 3 more times, Thor's one of the best characters in this movie. He'd rank probably 4th or 5th behind Cap, Tony, and Clint. There is a lot of depth to Thor's arc. Yes, there is a lot of comedy at Thor's expense here, but then you get things like his moment with Frigga on Asgard or when he says "Please just let me do something good. Something right!" when he wants to wield the glove. Thor's a tragic figure in this movie. I love how he is used here.

well that is factually wrong, as Dr Strange foresaw all the events leading up to the defeat of Thanos in IW, including this incarnation of Thor, and it was needed to defeat Thanos. So no EG Thor equals no defeat of Thanos and the end of Marvel movies as we know it.. Thor saved the Marvel Universe by gutsing it out. Thanks Thor and you should be very grateful you have something to talk about. Dont thank me, thank Thor

One great thing about Gunn is that he really brings heart into his films and understands this idea of healing and found family. With all the loss he has suffered and how damaged he is, Thor fits better with the Guardians at the moment than he does the Avengers if you ask me.

As great as Ragnarok was you never really get to see Thor reacting to all that loss. In Infinity War he continues the bravado while recounting his loss to Rocket (a very poignant scene) but you can see him starting to crack just a tiny bit. However, the two moments in Endgame where he sort of breaks down in front of the other Avengers while explaining the Aether and when he has his talk with his mother - that is really the first time we get to see those consequences and how they've affected Thor. That was great stuff.

Now I don't need to see Thor a sap for an entire film but that kind of insight into his character was needed and has given him way more depth. I think Gunn can work with that. I'm cautiously optimistic.

As great as Ragnarok was you never really get to see Thor reacting to all that loss. I would hope Thor will be more his old self by the time we get to GOTG3. Flying off with them doesn't seem to be a whim of the script, and now we know Hemsworth re-upped with Marvel way back in 2017. So the path for the character has to have been thought about for a while now.

Of interest to me is that he's a "god" and now in a place where he has stepped away from the role he thought he had to take up. If Adam Warlock is in GOTG3 and it would be dang silly if they teased him in GOTG2 and that turns out not to be the case... Well there we have a character often described as a sci fi messiah type. He too was created with a purpose and eventually found a new one. If they follow even some of that in the MCU it would be an interesting dynamic to see Thor and that kind of chararacter interact.

Thor is on the front lines against Thanos probably more than any other character including Cap and Iron Man.

So... Useless? No. Where is this coming from that fans think Thor has always been this Thanos trump card? Outside of his "Warrior Madness/Power Stone" story he's never been one to be presented the way MCU fans disappointed in the handling of Thor in AEG seem to think he has in the comics.




The one clear cut victory Thor had one on one that I can remember was a fight in which Thor used weapons given to him by his father that included a portion of the Odinforce in them and like two of the strength enhancing belts from the mythos. And even then... That got retconned as it being one of Thanos' renegade duplicates.

What Thor did in the final fight, which was actually a lot of face to face combat with Thanos despite what it's being characterized as, actually is in line with the majority of what Thor's fights againd The Mad Titan have been like in the source material for decades.

The issue isn't that Thor should be more powerful than Thanos, no one should be (including that Captain Marvel shouldn't shrug off a big blow by Thanos like it's nothing, especially after Thanos was the guy to get to break Cap's shield with pure force). Thor is certainly a big deal compared to the other heroes in the film though if we compare their comic counterparts. Even without any boosts like the Odinforce. It's primarily the comparison with the heroes that is interesting, not the one with the main villain. Especially since Thanos isn't the only villain in the climax.

I of course don't expect to see him breaking moons, nor do I think that he should get more important moments than the heroes that are going out in this film, but I certainly do expect him to be a noteworthy presence in the battle given how powerful he was in IW and because he's one of the characters with the most build up around this climax. Add that he did wield two of the most powerful weapons around and still didn't do much and I would have to say that this particular aspect is underwhelming. Cap doing so well initially after picking up Mjolnir shows very clearly that you can make someone look really good while still ultimately being beaten by Thanos.

I'd say that giving Captain Marvel's big spots in the finale to Thor and Hulk (he's certainly been overlooked in this aspect over the two final films) would be more emotionally rewarding within the story of the Infinity Saga as they actually are integral parts in it, although less of an advertisement for the future. Wanda's moment was awesome, and much due to that it's emotionally built up within the story.

I do think it was oddly undermining of Thanos's status as "big unbeatable bad guy" (straight up called unbeatable by Tony, even) to have him nearly get soloed by both Scarlet Witch and Captain Marvel. The former was admittedly a really cool scene, but still, it's not like they felt the need to undermine Thanos for the sake of giving Hulk or Thor an equally cool scene.

Sif not being there was an odd oversight given how many callbacks were in the film. I do hope we get more Sif in the future somehow. With Jane long gone they really should have moved that arc forward.

Just too bad that her filming schedule on Blindspot didn't allow her to do Thor: Ragnarok, IW or Endgame. She's basically the only main Asgardian character that didn't have any type of resolution the past few films.
