The Thor: L&T announcement coupled with Natalie Portman involvement has had quite an impact.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to this. After all the work Taika, Hemsworth and Tessa did in Ragnarok to make this franchise well loved by people. Jane is going to reap all the reward. So I guess Tessa is not going to have much screentime in this and its going to be all about Thor and Jane again. Who was even clamouring for Jane to come back? The two have no romantic chemistry whatsoever. I'm down for Lady Thor, but it should have been Valkyrie. That was who most thought was going to get the title if the MCU did that storyline. Tessa has the swagger and is a fan favourite and they passed her over for Jane Foster, who is the dullest female character in the MCU.
I was so excited for Thor 4 when we got the announcement. I was hoping Thor, Valkyrie and Hulk would get to go on an adventure together. I'm still going to watch it, I trust Taika, but I'm very skeptical about this. I just hope this Jane foster is from an alternative universe.
So you were hoping for a rerun of Ragnarok?

And I didnt immediately think of it, but its ridiculous that they arent giving Mjolnir to Valkyrie. Her origin and redemption in Ragnarok, and her actions in Endgame, and her becoming Queen made her the obvious female to wield Mjolnir.

This! I love Natalie, but it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that Tessa's Valkyrie, a more worthy character in this franchise is passed over for Jane Foster.

Then like me and many others, you can buy it and watch it whenever you like! :D
Oh I do watch it whenever I like, but that's not stopping me from wanting more space adventures for the revengers.

Which is fine. But the idea that most or any of the crew wants to make the same film again doesn't really ring true to me. Especially as Taika seems to be in firm control and both Hemsworth and Tessa seems to well aware what was going. This was his pitch after all.

Count me as another whose excitement for this has unfortunately dampened. I just have no desire to see female Thor either in the comics or on the big screen.

I will keep an eye on what Waititi comes up with though. And like a few others I did like Jane Foster in The first movie.

I never said anything about the cast. I was talking about what I wanted to see and why I was disappointed. And being an adventure set in space doesn't mean it's going to be the exact same movie. I'm still going to see it, I trust Taika. And I hope Valkyrie still gets enough screentime.

Tessa was on stage. I am sure her role is substantial.

If my math is correct i think Thor: L&T will start filming summer 2020.
It would line up with how Ragnarok was done.

mjolnir is still destroyed so idk how they're even going to do it with jane

being a sif and beta ray bill fan is true suffering :csad:

If it's done right it doesn't, but there was a couple of occasions it was poorly timed in Ragnarok ruining what should have been more emotional moments than what they were.

Korg's lines & interactions at the end on the ship regarding the foundations being gone, him trampling over Miek etc is a good example of that.

A lot of people brought this up and I had a completely different reaction to the scene. Dear, sweet Korg was trying to remain upbeat and positive in the face of a cataclysm until the foundation literally collapsed. It was funny and sweet and sad and uncomfortable all at the same time. The audience I was watching it with chuckled and then got really quiet. It was beautifully done and I'm hoping Taika gives us more of that great scene making in Love and Thunder.

Im with ya

I wasnt as enamored with the jane thor story as most (and i agree that Thor is the guys name, not some title)

But the biggest issue is portman, she looked so damn bored in her other two performances and always seemed like a rare MCU miscast to me. She doesnt sell the fantastical aspects of Thor, and even the chemistry between her and hemsworth always felt unnatural outside of the one cute scene of him kissing her hand in Thor 1(which wasnt scripted)
I love ragnarok tho so I have hope Taika does well here, but this took a lotta the wind outta my sails

This, I was really excited when Thor 4 was announced but this just isn't the direction I was expecting or that I wanted at all. :csad: I'm not giving up on it completely because Taika is wonderful and I do trust him and his vision, but I am very disappointed. I've never found MCU Jane Foster to be an interesting or likable character, part of that was how she was written but part was also Portman's lifeless, uninterested performance and her complete lack of chemistry with Hemsworth. There are many characters I'd like to see make a return to the Thor franchise, but she wasn't one of them, as much as I want to see more female heroes in the MCU.

I'll wait and see, but Doctor Strange 2 and Blade have both leaped ahead of this now as my most anticipated MCU movies.

He is. Why, is something that I'm trying to figure out due to the premise of the film.

You know the premise of the film? Wasn't it just announced yesterday? Please provide a plot summary. I'm interested in what's going on

Not sure what you mean. They announced her as the “female Thor”. But Thor is a name, not a superhero identity.

Thor gives up his name in the comic and Jane takes it.
You may not like it but is in the comics.

While I'm not a fan of making copies of heroes I have to say that, after letting the news sink in for a while, I can see the Jane Foster Thor thing play out well in a film. Her overall arc in the comics is a really good tragedy, but my issue with it was that it dragged out a bit long, which has a lot to do that we only get short parts of the story once per month.

In a film things flow much faster and as long as they find the time to get enough strong beats the quicker and shorter format might actually be quite fitting to the story.

I just hope that Taika has the same attitude as he had with Ragnarok, which was that if the film is called "Thor" then Thor has to be the best character. Meaning that as long as Thor is the focus of his own film and isn't overshadowed by other things I'm fine.

Ah good to know. This is making me feel better about the first two Thor films and Portman’s involvement in them. Mandarin in Shang Chi also makes me feel better about Iron Man 3.

I have the same issue as the comic. “Thor” is his real name, not a superhero identity like Captain America. So she isn’t playing female Thor, she’s playing Jane Foster who has the power of Thor.

This. I said this same thing in another thread.

And Thor isn't some kind of identity like Shazam. It's certainly not like how it was in the original comics with Donald Blake physically transforming into Thor.

There are plenty of Scandinavians named Thor too. It's just a name, like someone if they were named Bjorn. If Thor were named Bjorn instead, would Jane suddenly become a female Bjorn?

Steve Rogers didn't become an American Thor when he picked up the hammer in Endgame. Even Beta Ray Bill didn't suddenly go by the name of Thor.

Only a year away from now. I can’t wait.

"Female Thor" is a quick shorthand that instantly gives everyone an idea of what to expect. It rolls off the tongue better than "A movie about a woman given the magical or super advanced powers previously attributed to the alien once thought to be the Norwegian God Thor".

If they bring back RDJ for this, they can call it Thor: Love and Tropic Thunder.

Let's call it what it REALLY is. "Jane Foster" doesn't sell movie tickets, but the name Thor does. So just like in the comics they're willing to strip a major character of his namesake (and abilities) in order to prop up a lesser one.
