Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 7

Yes, and frankly I'm disappointed that Marvel dropped the ball so badly on this one.

Going back to Taika saying that the gladiator games on Sakaar are called the 'Contest of Champions', do you think we may get a little more than just a nod to that comics storyline from the title? In the comic, the Grandmaster had a wager with Death herself (for the life of the Collector I believe), so if Hela really is standing in for Death in the MCU, maybe the Grandmaster has a wager with Hela in this universe instead? It seems a bit of a coincidence that Hela blasts Thor out to the exact same planet where the Grandmaster is holding the Hulk, maybe that's deliberate? Hulk is the Grandmaster's champion, Thor is Hela's... they fight to the death and the winner gets...? The soul stone maybe?

I don't know, just spit balling theories. That would be sweet. :woot:

I don't know about the soul stone, but the idea of a wager with Death sounds pretty plausible to me.

It would be a way to tie Sakaar in with the rest of the story in a direct, meaningful way.

Right now we can say that Ragnarok and Planet Hulk are being woven together, but we don't really know much about how all the pieces will fit.

So... Grandmaster and Hela having some sort of wager could make sense.

My guess is Loki and Grandmaster are betting on the fight - theres quite a bit of separation between them on the couch - with Thor gaining his freedom if he beats the Grandmaster's big green champion.

You know, I've watched dozens of reviews of the trailer, and not one has mentioned the idea that the "narration" could very well just be a piece of dialogue in the film used as in a narrative sense in the trailer. And that's what it likely is. Why would they all of a sudden start including 4th wall breaking narration when we're 15 movies in the franchise?

Different director, different style of movie would be my guess

Or as a piece of narration just used for the trailer. One or the other is likely.

It has been mentioned here actually.

I think that narration from the beginning of the Teaser Trailer is part of a conversation Thor has with Valkyrie on Sakaar. And you putted it perfectly. Oh and by the way a lot of people seem to think that Thor talks to the camera in that first scene but that is simply not true.

I always assumed the narration was from the actual film and not 4th wall breaking. I figure it's Thor talking to Banner.

Ya, it would definitely be more meaningful no doubt.

Who cares?

They used a 4th wall break in IM3 - which was what 6-7 films deep into the MCU?

Actually the entire film is Tony talking to Bruce. So it's not really a 4th wall break.

I'm secretly hoping the post credits scene is Thor also talking to Bruce in a therapy section.

I wonder if we are gonna get some Ragnarok taste in GOTG2. Maybe a post credits scene.

lol Kevin Smith was hilarious on the Ragnarok trailer review lol
True story. He was blown away by the trailer.
He's completely sold and on board for the movie. Pretty much 95% of the reactions online we're really positive. People like/love and are amazed by the fresh new look. And you see most of the people that we're on the fence about another Thor movie just jump on the hype train and get really excited for this movie.

But yeh... Kevin Smith was all over the trailer.
"This trailer is one of the greatest things that has ever happen to the civilized world."
:woot: And he was honest when he said he had already watched 4 times when he actually recorded his reaction.

I definitely think Kevin Smith's reaction video was my favourite, that is pretty accurately my exact reactions every time I watch the teaser. "Take all my ****ing money man, take my child's money, take my family's money!" :funny:

I have a theory on that too, I actually think Loki has switched sides and is acting as Hela's representative in that scene with the Grandmaster. Think about it, why is he being treated like a VIP while Thor has been captured and is being made to fight? I think Loki initially helps Thor look for Odin on Earth, but then Hela appears, destroys Mjolnir and casts Thor out to Sakaar. So what happens to Loki after that? Maybe Hela gives him an ultimatum and pretty much says you can either side with me or die. Loki, of course, would act in his own best interests and would join Team Hela. Hela, who has a wager with the Grandmaster, is too busy making plans of mass destruction to go to Sakaar and watch the contest herself, so she sends Loki as her representative.

Loki then goes on to switch teams a couple more times probably ("FOR MYSELF!" and all that :cwink:) but ultimately ends up back in Thanos' clutches either at the end of Ragnarok or the beginning of IW so he's all set to play the Mephisto role there.

But Hela has been imprisoned for "millennia". Why would she even have a wager with the Grandmaster? And when Thor arrives to Sakaar it's kinda surprising for The Grandmaster. He even asks Valkyrie what did she brought him that day... Like she normally brings gladiators in and he's wondering who is the new guy.

On the other side i can see Loki being together with Hela at some point but then realizing that she wants to rule over ashes he flips his allegiance once again.

And i gotta agree with Zarex... i can also see that Loki and The Grandmaster have something on the line in the Thor vs Hulk battle. The Grandmaster is clearly on Hulk's side and ironically Loki can only be on Thor's side. By this time he probably realizes he needs his brother to take back Asgard. And as we learned from those descriptions of the scene with Korg and Miek... Korg says to Thor that the only way to escape is defeating the Champion aka The Hulk which apparently no-one has accomplished and it's kinda a suicide mission.

That's also why Thor has such a happy reaction to the appearance of Hulk in the arena. Thor is screwed in Sakaar... he has been captured and is in a cage... without mjolnir wich has been destroyed by Hela who probably describes to him her plans for Asgard... Thor goes into that fight thinking that he gotta defeat some sort of beast and has to find a way somehow back to Asgard where he has to stop Ragnarok. Seeing Hulk is a massive relief for him and a confidence boost because he knows/thinks that they are friends and the Hulk can help him on the long run.
