The DaVinci Code earned a hefty $28.6 million on Friday , and a rival studio (i.e., not Columbia, the domestic distributor) is projecting a $78,790,000 weekend. The question is what it will do on weekend #2 and #3, especially with X-Men 3: The Last Stand expected to go through the roof when it opens next Friday. Brett Ratner's sequel is going to make over $100 million over the 4-day Memorial Day weekend . (A recent tracking report had general awareness at 89, definite interest at 56 and first choice at 23. By the time next weekend rolls around the first choice figure for X-Men 3 will likely be up to 40.) Mission: Impossible III did $3.3 million on Friday and will only do about $10.9 million for the weekend, which means it'll be a push to $120 million. M:I:3 may do okay with foreign revenue and everything else factored in, but that's not much of a domestic haul for a film of this size. Over the Hedge is expected to do about $38,200,000 for the weekend. Poseidon is off 57% this weekend, with a projected $9,500,000. It cost $160 million to make, and it may earn a bit less than $50 million before leaving the domestic arena.

Well Da Vinci Code wasn't the bomb some of the fans on the Hype were hoping it to be.

DaVinci wasn't going to bomb...that book is too popular that at this point it's too critic-proof to have bad reviews take any effect on it this weekend.

It will be next weekend when we'll see how well it will ultimately do.

Also, the DaVinci demographic is older--they won't rush out to the movies opening weekend like X-Men or Superman fans would. It will hold pretty strong for a few weeks, even if it drops off a lot next weekend.

Everybody knows that X-Men will outsell all those movies. The point of this is...

Movies like X3, DaVinci, Superman, etc....wait til the end of the summer to make a judgment. The opening weekend is all about buzz and marketing. They are all going to have huge openings. Whether the film has legs will show the true popularity of the film.

I liked DaVinci...critics slammed more than they are doing X3, but I am sure I will love it even more. DaVinci ran on and on the last half hour...could of ended 3 times but we won't get that with X3.

Just saw The Da Vinci Code and I think it was a good movie I don't know why the critics are bashing it.

The critics aren't the only ones bashing it. It's listed as a rotten tomatoe and at 37% I believe. However, I don't understand why either. I liked both the Underworld & Underworld Evolution, but those two movies were both rotten tomatoes as well, so who knows? I say that a movie like The Da Vinci Code & X3 are going to do well in it's opening because of the buzz and the marketing (Xcellent marketing by Fox with X3 by the way). But as LMason stated, we will have to wait until the summer is over to see if the films have the legs to walk to the top.

i wont see it at theatres, but on dvd or cable. nothing this month will b good as xmen

And then Advanced Dark would make us eat our words. :(
