Tim Burton's Dark Shadows - Part 2

I will be watching this as soon as possible as well. Just for Eva. The material seen so far? Good lord. :D

I sat through New Year's Eve for Michelle alone... So I'll be there this weekend.

I've already made sure my friends have a free night Friday. :woot:

October or November would have been a great date, Or even Alice in wonder land's date. Just seems like WB wanted a film for this spot in particular.

Anyone else get the feeling that Dark Shadows is gonna flop next weekend? The Avengers is a monster hit. So, it's definitely gonna continue to dominate for the rest of the month. I think Dark Shadows will be lucky if it opens with $20 million. Maybe WB should have released Dark Shadows in October. May was always a big gamble.

The Avengers doing well (and it won't win Memorial Day weekend) does not necessarily effect other films like DS. It's counterprogramming that actually can appeal to males and children, on top of the women demographic. If it's good (which I really can't tell--it could be great or a Mars Attacks!-styled mess), it will easily find its audience with Depp, Burton and vampires.

I think it will open in second place with around $40 million and be able to cross $120 million at least domestically if it's good. That would be a success for this smaller-budgeted film. Still, let's see what the WOM is first.

Yeah, it is. And what will Mom want to see instead of Avengers?

Yeah, Avengers and Dark Shadows aren't going to affect each other one way or the other. Different kind of movie.

If Avengers is going to hurt any film it's Battleship which will probably tank hard in North America.

Not saying moms wouldn't enjoy Avengers, but odds are they'd be more interested in Dark Shadows because they like macabre-esque soap operas.

You know how many moms adore the Twilight sereis? Dark Shadows is their original Twilight. DS won't be number one at the B.O. but I can definitely see it being in the top 3 at least.

Keep dreaming.

Keep dreaming? It's a Tim Burton and Johnny Depp PG-13 comedy about vampires and you don't think that will bring out the tween girls and usual Burton audience? If the movie is good and has at least solid WOM, which I don't know at this point, I see it pulling 40-50 million next weekend easily. Meanwhile The Avengers will probably still take in 80-90 million, but they're not really competing in the same league.

The Avengers has Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth. I think Moms will be just fine with the Avengers.

I don't know how many women above 20 really drool over movie stars like that. Over 60 percent of TA's audience was male and a good chunk of the close to 40 percent that was female were probably dragged by their boyfriends/husbands/children. Now when it is "their turn" the next weekend, they may want to see something else. And unlike traditional romantic comedy fare, DS can appeal to male audiences given the cast and subject matter.

Listen to the entire score.

Seriously guys, listen to that prologue.

I'm listening to that prologue. Interestingly the first 30 seconds or so is one of the background themes from the old TV show. I find it odd that of all the (relatively) famous music from the show, that's what Elfman chose to carry over.

The rest of the track is traditional Burton-Elfman fare and reminds me of a cross between Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish. That's a great thing.

depp and burton alone will bring in 40 mill wont effect avengers at all.i see 40mill ow and over 100mill domestic.

A week after the Avengers? You can't be serious.

Um...yeah. Ever heard of counter-programming? Now, unlike most counter-programming, this appeals to more than just women given that it's Depp/Burton and it's subject matter is more horror-comedy than romantic-comedy.

What was this movie's production budget?

I heard it's around $110 million, but I'm not sure if that is right.

That sounds kind of high for what this movie appears to be.

Yeah... I heard it's between $100-110 million, but nothing official.

I think this might be another Sweeney Todd for Tim/Johnny.

Tell me the last time a Tim Burton movie that wasn't based off an already popular property (because Dark Shadows isn't a popular property) crossed $100 million domestic.

The answer is NEVER. Unless you adjust for inflation. In that case, it would be Edward Scissorhands which grossed $105.8 million in 2012 dollars.

BURTON-DEPP DOMESTIC GROSSES:

1. Alice in Wonderland - $334.1 million
2. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - $206.4 million
3. Sleepy Hollow - $101 million / $156 million adjusted
4. Edward Scissorhands - $56.3 million / $105.8 million adjusted
5. Corpse Bride - $53.3 million
6. Sweeney Todd - $52.8 million
7. Ed Wood - $5.8 million / $11 million adjusted

As you can see, Burton & Depp have only had two big hits. And both were based on popular children's properties. The duo is more of a cult hit than anything else.

Burton has actually had more success without Depp.

BURTON MINUS DEPP:

1. Batman - $251 million / $500 million adjusted
2. Batman Returns - $162.8 million / $310.7 million adjusted
3. Planet of the Apes - $180 million / $251 million adjusted
4. Beetlejuice - $73.7 million / $142 million adjusted
5. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure - $41 million / $91 million adjusted
6. Big Fish - $66.8 million / $85 million adjusted
7. Mars Attacks! - $37.7 million / $66.5 million adjusted

I wouldn't mind watching this. Certainly would have done if it was out a few weeks ago.

Well the only one he made after Johnny Depp became an A-lister with Jack Sparrow was Sweeney Todd. Yes, it wasn't 9-figure hit, but it also was an R-rated musical horror-tragedy. Not a PG-13 comedy about vampires without characters bursting into song.

My mom would rather watch paint dry than sit through The Avengers. She hates those movies. She wants to see Dark Shadows, she loved that show way back when and she loved the trailers for the movie.

Speaking as a 30-something female...plenty of us like them just fine. And there were lots of us at Avengers this weekend.

Yeah.... No women over 20 drool over movie stars?

I think Zac Efron's career would disagree with that. :o
