Tim Burton's Dark Shadows - Part 2

Yea, I wasn't too much of a fan of the revival show. It wasn't that it was played straight but that it lacked alot of the demented, slightly bizarre and surreal vibe of the original series. I also thought Ben Cross wasn't a very good Barnabas. He wasn't very charasmatic.

Angelique was in the revival but the show was canned before they could really conclude it. We get their backstory and what not, but they never saw it through.

Anyways, I'm not really feeling the trailer all that much. I was expecting something closer to Sleepy Hollow. The thing with Dark Shadows is that it's aged the same way that the old Universal Horror films did. The scares have dissipated but what you're left with is something incredibly surreal, demented and mildly disturbing. And for all the goofs and slip-ups of the show, it was still damn good. All of that seems to be missing in this trailer. Depp's Barnabas seems to lack much of charm of Frid's, who was far more suave and straight laced. It helped that Collinwood felt so detatched from the rest of the world. The "man out of time" as a comedy thing feels really tired here, too. I really wish Burton played it straight, but we'll see I guess.

Agreed. Also, in the show Barnabas, while the protagonist, was also a bastard and killed people--sometimes good people--and could be cruel and vindictive. In short, he was an anti-hero who could be very menacing. In the trailer, you get none of that. He seems less threatening than Edward Scissorhands. And that's a problem, in my opinion.

I like Cross' Barnabas, sure he doesn't hold a candle to Frid but I find it impossible to do so anyway but he's very good in its own right and I like seeing parts of his human side still left. Mayhap's that I have a soft spot for the show since that's how I discovered DS but it's interesting with the differences Curtis made to some of the characters and I like that it's longer than the 60's so there's no room for filler plot-lines. A shame that it's canceled since I wouldn't mind it going on for a bit longer.

"I've seen the movie a bunch of times with an audience and, to me, it's a return to form of more like Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice tone. It's that weird, subversive tone. It's not overtly for kids like Alice in Wonderland, I think people will be fine once they see it. There's are some bloody sequences in it and dark witchcraft sequences. We had a test screening last week and it went over great." - Seth Grahame-Smith

I'm actually thinking its going to be more around the tone and style of The Witches of Eastwick... only, of course with the PG-13 rating.

Think of Dark Shadows being much like Burtons Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow in tone.

I for one, am looking forward to this film. I think it will be a pleasant surprise.

I don't think we saw that one...

I think Eva Green looks amazing in the trailer, but I'm rather lukewarm to the rest, including the gothic Johnny Depp who is deadpanning throughout the movie. It's not the kind of movie I'd rush to see on its first week.

The differences of opinion are interesting for it...

Personally I'll be there opening weekend if possible. This is right up my alley (fidelity to the source material be damned)... but the much hyped about Prometheus, I honestly have ZERO interest in seeing. My attitude to that is ''I'll get to it when I get to it''.

The thing is, I see and am reading about people genuinely laughing or grinning at some of the funny parts and intrigued by the horror aspect. BUT they feel it's wrong to laugh because... the tv series from the 60's which its based on never made me laugh, therefore...

This does not compute.

weird.

For me it's not so much that they added comedy it's that the comedy seems to be unoriginal and not that funny. I will check the movie out eventually but unless a better trailer comes along I'm not in a hurry to see it.

Meant to be a response to DACrow above:

SPOILER ALERT!!!

One critic who saw the screening (might have been AICN), said it was difficult not to like Barnabas, even though he sometimes acts like an a-hole AND he kills quite a few people.

Sound better?

If he murders Vicky's (supposedly the main girl, though she's barely in the trailer) successor, beats Willy (JEH) near to death for trivial anger, buries the local reverend alive behind a brick wall in the basement, enslaves Caro....scratch that they turned her into a kid (how about Pffeifer? :oldrazz: ) and reveals he drove his fiancee 200 years ago to her suicide....yeah okay. ;)

I just think he is going to be more like Depp's Jack Sparrow who killed a few people, but is a lovable goof to the audience. And nobody of importance, save for Geoffrey Rush who they brought back in the sequels.

Look forward to this. Dark Shadows is Burton's first gothic film in years.

I don't know why, but I just find Jonny Lee Miller's hilarious.

He looks like he should be wearing a monocle.

I'm really excited for this movie, I'm a big fan of the original series, but my goodness. All these posters so far are HORRIBLE. Why are they all so white? It's just so garish.

Moretz looks a tad aged up.

Creepy and yet not remotely surprising.

Also, these posters look cheap/fanmade.
