Tim Burton's Dark Shadows - Part 2

Chloe seems to have a rather larger part then I originally thought. She pretty much being billed right behind Depp and Green. Interesting.

It's all about the women.

Huh?

Shes second last to be credited... this is the official billing:

Johnny Depp
Michelle Pfeiffer
Helena Bonham Carter
Eva Green
Jackie Earle Haley
Johnny Lee Miller
Chole Grace Moretz
Bella Heathcote

Look at the promotion. I think only Depp and Green have more lines and bits in the trailers. Pfeiffer, Haley, Miller and Carter may have higher billing, but they don't seem to be the ones they are using to promote this.

Depp is the icon, Green is the sex appeal and Moretz is the young, cynical and hip bit of the promotion.

Well you were talking billing... so technically we don't have to look at anything else.

Of course they are using Depp and Green to promote this... he is the quasi-hero of the piece and she the villian. It's simple.

And apart from Moretz' 'stoned' comment... I wouldn't say they have been pushing her as much as you think.

The Alice Cooper bit, the husband bit, and she seems to be the only one against Barnabas.

I don't know, perhaps I am just surprised by how much they have sprinkled her across the footage shown so far.

Those moments seemed more like Depp's time to shine as opposed to Moretz.

But hey I love her and hope her role is very meaty. Pfeiffer and Bonham Carter get a few nice beats in the released footage.

Its the men that seem to suffer... Johnny Lee Miller for instance.

Very true. Outside of Haley's discovery of Barnabas, I can't remember much of anything from the men.

Just watched the trailer and tv spots I could find. Outside of Eva Green (big part) and Heathcote (is she really in the movie), it feels like the other three females are all interchangable.

Well most soap operas revolve around women anyway, doubt this movie will be that different. :oldrazz:

I hope this movie can restore the Burton/Depp collab to its former glory...

Phenomenal:
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Ed Wood (1994)
Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Great:
Sweeney Tood: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

Average:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
Corpse Bride (2005)

Not bad, just disappointing:
Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Switch Sleepy Hollow with Sweeney Todd and you're list is about right.

Well, I'd put CATCF down with AIW as well.

I always loved the atmosphere in Sleepy Hollow! I can't wait for Dark Shadows, I truly hope it will be cool!

New TV Spot (I think!):

You can hear Batman Returns music in the beginning...

Back in February when the score was recorded in London I was following some tweets from some brass players who all noted that the score was really, really dark. I think Elfman will do what he does a lot nowadays and ignore the comedy.

Perhaps with a little darker tone... to offset some of the mixed reaction?

I don't think the reaction has been that mixed. Just the usual Burton and Depp haters mixed with Dark Shadows elitist.

In all honesty, do you expect anything from Tim Burton to be played completely straight? Even his darkest stuff has had some tongue in cheek stuff going on.

I would disagree. While the Internet is a bit skewed (the only people commenting are people who already care and most of the GA won't until the week of the movie's release), the reaction has been very mixed and downright negative. So much so, that Graham-Smith (the screenwriter) did a damage-control interview with Entertainment Weekly a few days after the trailer's release.

I think the reaction has been so mixed that they're kind of rushing out another 2:30 minute trailer? One that will come out less than a month after the first dropped?

For my part, I hope the trailer is a lot better than the last one.

Not to start spamming this thread again, but I never expect something straight from Tim Burton. But there is a difference between the tone of, say, Sleepy Hollow and the tone of Mars Attacks! I think it is fair to say many are disappointed the trailer makes the movie look like it leans towards the latter.

I've seen plenty of positive reactions to the trailer (I've now seen it in theaters twice at crowded shows, and both times the audience laughed at all the right places), but I agree the overall response - mainly online - has been mixed.

Also, unlike DACrowe, I like Mars Attacks!, but I think this looks more like Beetlejuice crossed with the suburbia portions of Edward Scissorhands than that movie. I agree that it's nothing like Sleepy Hollow, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

Burton's theme in most of his flicks is that the creepy weirdos are usually better people than the more normal ones.

Two trailers are the norm. That the first trailer took so long to come out is the problem. We know they were testing at least a few different trailers so it isn't like they are rushing another one out.

Where has the downright negative reaction been? I haven't seen it outside of imdb from people who didn't want this film in the first place.

Really? I am trying to think of the movies that emphasized that, but while the hero of the tales are usually misunderstood and would probably be considered abnormal, the best of their companions seems quite normal and good people, while most of the bad people are wolves in sheep's clothing. Wouldn't call them normal in the least bit.
