Tim Burton's Dark Shadows - Part 2

From what I've gathered from SGS interviews, August's draft was darker and more in tune with the show. Since Depp and Burton wanted to movie to be fun and accessible they brought SGS on instead.

And that was their mistake.

I like how none of them are really Hollywood hot. They all look like they'd be pretty weird.

Not like superficially hot. They have very specific facial features.

Green's way too offbeat to be "Hollywood hot".

Had my advanced screening on Tuesday. Here's my review for Dark Shadows:

http://reelmoviehero.blogspot.com/2012/05/review-lights-go-out-on-dark-shadows_10.html

Snippet:

"It definitely has the Tim Burton vibe going for it, but Dark Shadows lacks in many areas that make for a thoroughly enjoyable time. While the first half is fun enough, the movie ultimately relies too heavily on Depp without giving him enough to work with and the sloppy story telling only ends up making matters worse."

To be fair Ebert didn't like Beetlejuice or Edward Scissorhands either. However, he seems to think the first 5 minutes of prologue promises a great gothic horror movie and that the rest of the film fails to deliver on that promise.

While I don't entirely agree with his review, I do agree that the prologue was the best part of the movie and it should have continued in that tone. I wouldn't be surprised if the prologue was one of the few remaining elements from John August's original screenplay.

So is SGS going to be Burtons new script guy?

Burton in that cast picture looks a lot like Nicholas Cage lol
but he should stick with his main script guy they have had more hits then misses.

The prologue sounds a lot like what I wanted from this movie when I heard "Tim Burton's adapting Dark Shadows." If he decided to keep it as a gothic horror/fairy tale and not a comedy that boils down to "See the colonial aristocrat be dumbfounded by the silly '70s," I think the movie could have been great. Oh well.

Frankly... I've only glossed over some reviews, mainly because I don't want to bum myself out before seeing the movie.

The biggest negatives seem to be shifting tone and simply trying to do too much without focus.

I kind of expected this... but oh well, my bum was always in the seat for Michelle alone.

I'll still check it out come tomorrow after work or something, just being a Burton fan. It's a summer flick, I'm not expecting like Oscar season ****.
