Tim Burton's Dark Shadows - Part 2

How I'd rank Burton's movies:

1. Ed Wood
2. Sweeney Todd
3. Big Fish
4. Edward Scissorhands
5. Beetlejuice
6. Batman
7. Batman Returns
8. Sleepy Hollow

I did not care for the others. I hope Dark Shadows joins that list because I loved the show. But the trailer made it look like an uneven campy mess and that's what all the reviews say. I am worried.

I'm going to see this in about an hour. I'm going to stay optimistic and give Burton the benefit of the doubt.

you didn't like Pee Wee's Big Adventure?

How about this:

A movie based on a cult hit gaining a cult following AFTER it's long gone from theaters

Would be a nice 360.

This movie suffers from a jarring tonal shift. The advertising is grossly misleading -- there's a handful of funny scenes and one-liners but it's not a comedy (especially the jarringly different third act). Either Burton should've gone all-out and made this decade's The Addams Family or went all Sleepy Hollow for it. Not try and mix the two.

Bruno Delbonnel's cinematography is excellent, but his masterworks were A Very Long Engagement and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Dark Shadows fits Delbonnel's various filters and angles to Burton's skewed aesthetics.

5/10
that is a good way to put it he mixed sleepy hollow with the addams famliy.he should have went one way or the other.its only gonna do around 27mill this weekend i thought it would atleast pull between 35 and 40 mill.with its budget its a flop.i still think it would have done better between november and december rather than summer.its just not a summer blockbuster better served in the winter.

I think the movie was actually much more fun and entertaining than the trailers made out.

The film could have done with a more focused marketing campaign (and one that started sooner quite frankly) AND a better release date. around October/November.

Shame.

A flop? It's only been Friday. Wait a few weeks (apparently it's already doing great overseas).

I think Burton has had only two misfires and they were Planet of the Apes and Alice in Wonderland. I think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory gets a bad rap because of the nostalgic love of the 1971 version but I actually think Burton's film is a much more faithful and better version of the book.

Anyway, keep in mind his inspirations (other than the original show) for this Dark Shadows.

This.

It's just a shame Tim got to make a vampire movie with Johnny and it turned into this... I was hoping for a serious movie, not a silly one.

yes a flop 27mill ow with a 150mill budget.its not going to make back its budget or hit a 100 mill with that kinda opening.the movies comming up will kill it battleship mib3 and snow white and the huntsman.i thought it would get 40 mill opening weekend.i dont consider a movie a flop if the studio made profit off them like plant of the apes alice in wonderland even charlie.they all 3 made back over their budgets domestically and overseas.

same thing i wanted a interview with the vampire or bram stokers dracula type movie.probably wont see depp as lestat after this.

But yeah, I overestimated how popular Burton-Depp are these days. Perhaps, his cooky characters only hit if it's a family film which this does not appear to quite be.

Even if this were family-friendly, like the Addams Family, the Avengers is too much competition. The release date was all wrong. Warner Bros. should have released the film in October. Or, at least, September if it didn't want to collide with Burton's Frankenweenie.

this had winter release all over it. i would have put it out the week before thanksgiving so it would have a good run thru xmas.it would have made more money.

Just got back from the theater. I liked it, but the tone was all over the place and the script felt clunky at times. The ending felt kind of rushed. When the film was dark and gloomy and really gothic I was loving it, but whenever the humor would show it's face it felt, I want to say, juvenile. The humor wasn't anything special and I didn't find it all that funny. I wished to hell Burton would have just made this a straight up gloomy gothic movie instead of doing this tongue in cheek thing that kept showing up. I hope it does well, because it's not a bad movie. It just has an inconsistent tone and the plot was a bit wishy washy. I'll give it a 6.5/10

Oh and the release date IS awful. I went to a 3:00 showing and the entire theater was mostly people swarming for The Avengers. They still had multiple line and sold out theaters. This should have been a early or late fall release for sure. It's going to get smashed by The Avengers and MIB3.

That would have also been a horrible release date. September or October would have been the ideal release date.

I did like the use of Alice Cooper's Ballad of Dwight Fry, especially since in the movie Carolyn had the opening line, it's like she was saying about her own father, Paul.

Remember while Ed wood and Sweeney todd are considered fine films from Tim Burton Ed wood bombed In 1994 and Sweeney todd underperformed in 2007.

Planet of the Apes,Catcf, and Alice all made money at the box office.Quality Is a different matter.

Coming out the week after The Avengers was dumb move by Warner brothers as was their marketing campagin.Wiated so long to release any trailer and people are saying the trailer misrepersents the final film.

Dark Shadows may turn out to be one of those films that get lost In theatres but gains a cult following.

Caught it earlier. It was definitely a fun little flick, the final battle reminded me of Beetlejuice's climax almost, with all the crazy stuff going on. It goes back and forth between comedy and straight horror/adventure, but it's not a bad flick.

Alice grossed over 1B WW so it's definitely not a flop. I think you were thinking of Mars Attack! as the other Burton flop.

Marketing

It can kill movies if not properly managed like John Carter and this movie.

All the tv spots and trailers are highlighting the funny parts and the movie is much more than that.

People will go in with the wrong perception of the movie.

An early April or late March would have worked.

burtons planet of the apes is much hated but is not a flop.the movie made 180 mill domestic

I have seen It,and like it.I don't get the negativity some people are giving It.

If you watched previous incarnations of Dark Shadows there are a lot of homages you can pick up.It's a remake that respects the original.I actully liked Burton's planet of the apes.

The trailer and TV spots totally misrepresent this film. They would have you believe this Is zany comedy. It's not.

There Is homage to Jonathan Frid In Johnny depp's performance. This Isn't Jack Sparrow as Vampire.

Michelle Pfeiffer Is great In this film. And hey she has to be about the sexiest 50ish actress today.Burton needs to work with her more.

Helena Bonham Carter does good In limited amount of screentime.Intresting twists to Julia Hoffman Dark Shadows fans should apprecate.

Chloe Moretz shows why she Is turning Into queen of Jailbait.Still I don't feel this was a strong performance from CHloe. She has done better.

Eva Green defently goes over the top and as far as sexyness goes she to me was upstaged a bit by Michelle and Chloe.I am glad Jackie earl haley as willy didn't turn Into copy of 1991 version willy.Johnny Lee Miller as Roger was wasted In film.

Bella Heathcote was was very beautiful as Victoria. She could have used some more screentime.

I think this Is one of better collorbations between Burton and Depp.A shame It Is getting this negativity.
