Tom Welling as Superman Manips

A poster I made for a possible Metropolis movie or tv-series.
This took a while to finish because it was all photoshop drawn, but near the end of it I had another idea for another drawing and I sorta rushed it. Not what I was hoping for, but it'll have to do.

That’s what I am talking about!


Two things you nailed, that I have tried to explain in the past. You made his lips more regular skin tone, and got rid of the bright red/pink, and you reduced his hair cut some too.

1. If someone wants to make him look less boyish and more masculine, then need to subdue the bright colored lips. This is something that could even be done on the set by the makeup team. It may even be the other way around, I suspect the show makeup team tried to make the 30 year old actor look early 20's by putting lipstick on Tom to make his lips more red. Anyway, seeing this pic confirms by belief that is someone wants to make him look more manly, one big step in the right direction is to make the lips less colorful
2. You reduced his hair some. I think it could even be taken down further on the sides and back. The longer hair on Clark in the Smallville series looks like another attempt to make him look more boyish. Having a round silhouette to the head with a bigger haircut makes anyone look more effeminate.By cutting it back some, and it could even look up to 1" shorter on the sides and back yet, makes him look more masculine as the head silhouette is made to look more rectangular, more square and less round.

The above two changes should be done to any Welling manip, and would go a long way to avoiding "SuperBOY" insults, as it would make him look far more like a SuperMAN.

Here is another example I just whipped up after seeing the last one.

Changes made:

Used Reeve body, with belt moved down, more narrow waist to be more like Tom's real proportions.

Changed the hair, to make it look shorter, mostly on the sides.

Reduced the color of his lips.

Fixed the snagle tooth in the mouth, by white over it.

He already had the 5:00ph shaddow, I tried to remove it, but it looked too painted over so I hit undo and left it.

Anyhow, there you go, hair cut, reduce the lip color back to his normal flesh tone, and fix that tooth, and Tom Welling looks far more masculine.

Hey there. I am mostly a lurker these days, due to my insane class schedule at school (Mizzou), but I managed to (finally!) throw some colors on a drawing I did of Tom-as-Superman a while ago. I can't quite remember if I posted this exact drawing on here--I think I posted a different one a few pages back-- but I wanted to post THIS one none the less. I "inked" and colored this entirely in Autodesk Sketchbook Mobile for my ipod touch, so it looks quite a bit different then it would have if I had used photoshop. That being said, I was going for a "painted" vibe, which was easy to achieve with that program, given that I was making the "brush" strokes with my finger rather than with a mouse. It's a pretty cool program.

Here are the original pencils for the drawing. Originally, I drew the costume sans-head as an idea for a more "Superman-esque" costume for Conner Kent in the comics...but then I decided I liked it MUCH better as a "Smallville Superman" costume concept. If any of you want to throw some colors of your own on this, go for it! I'm sure most of you could do a better job than I, haha.

As always Mike great job! As much as I enjoy the iconic suit I really think its time for a reboot. My idea is controversial but I think it could work especially for Smallville. My idea is to make it a Kryptonian Military dress Uniform. Think of Ross's version of Captain Marvel for the top have with the emblazoned shield and a gold belt over a red sash. I would also change the boots to more militaristic look as well. I would keep the cap but make it long ala 300. I picture a Dark blue suit with a traditional shield, (metallic) and a blood red cap. I know it's a radical departure but it makes sense. The closest I could think of this would be the Red Son version. What do you think? It makes more sense then a pair of pajamas.
