Tom Welling as Superman

Most of this is old news so bear with me cause i will be posing a question sometime during this post. So the interview with Al was is actually true saying that tom isnt going to be in this movie at all. So the question is with more than a few sites on the internet saying that Tom hasnt been approached or is no longer in the running, would/could WB talk to tom and his agent without the consent of of Al or Miles? I guess basically back door them. Could he have the role without them knowing at all? Couldnt WB use the excuse of Plausible Deniability as the reason why they kept Al/Miles out of the know.

I mean granted if they know they arent going to come right out and say hey our boy is the new Superman. It just really bugs me how adament he was about not being approached at all and Tom's agent didnt tell me s*** and so on and so forth.

Ok now im just rambling

although he is out of the running. See its crap like this that makes me angry. Im glad he's their choice though.

I wish I was keeping track of all the sites that have been picking Welling. Shockingly, even Empire Magazine sited him for the part last week.

Regardless of whether or not Welling has ever been approached for the role (as Gough would have the public believe), I really have to wonder what the suits at Warners think about all of the support he's getting even *after* Gough's vehement denials. It's almost as if people are saying "we don't care what you say, we want him anyway."

Gosh, I hope they're watching. :o

Sure they COULD. Gough doesnt represent Welling, nor does Welling have a contract with Gough, his deal with with WB TV.

But WOULD they? I think Gough would have to know because the scheduling for filming would need to be worked out. Plus I dont think it's something they would hide from him regardless.

I dont want to be a fly in the ointment cause I want this to happen just as much as a lot of you do but it just seems with all these reports going around that the WB isnt listening and we are going to get someone else for Supes which is totally going to turn me off to this flick. my glass half full opinion can only last so long. sorry to be a bummer:(

I don't think anyone is convinced that Tom will be Superman yet. Your concerns are shared by a lot of us that are still hoping for this to come through.

I can't even speculate about it anymore. I simply don't know. I just hope.

Gosh, I hope they're watching. :o

I do too!
But didn't Tom lead in all the big polls during the last casting wars? Was it the MSN poll that was huge? They ignored them then, I hope they don't do it again.

did something happen recently that officially said Tom wasn't doing it?

Exactly. Casting Welling makes my anticipation for JL go from "looking forward to seeing it" to "hyperventilating with excitement."

We're all keeping our fingers crossed, DvilDog. :)

That was MSNBC. 74% of over 66 THOUSAND people voting said TW would make the best Superman:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5270489/

CNN did one too. 55% of over 28 thousand people said the same thing here:
http://www.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/12640.exclude.html

They ignored them then, I hope they don't do it again.
I'm not sure they ignored anything; casting for the last film was pretty much the director's decision. The studio just had to approve it.

I'm not sure what the stipulations are this time around, however.

yeah that director "ignored" a lot of things, like the past 30 years of the comics for starters

Pat, I've been lurking for some time now, and it never ceases to amaze me at the wealth of info. you have at your disposal.

Pat, at Bluetights, you mentioned in a very informative post, that Welling was never considered for SR.
But you never explained his statement at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards.
Can you? :)

Are you asking her WHAT the statement was? , or are you asking her to explain what he meant if it wasnt Superman?

Whoawhoawhoa.... I said SINGER never considered him an option for SR. I believe Welling was "considered" however, just not by Singer.

As to the Teen Choice comments, gosh, who knows Boots? We know it wasn't in reference to The Fog or the CBTD sequel because The Fog wasn't even in the planning stages, and the first CBTD film had just finished its run in theaters; the sequel and Welling's casting wasn't announced till the following year.

So, my personal opinion? There was some kind of pre agreement made, possibly just a verbal one, and things were in motion. But there were ALL sorts of rumors flying during that time. Welling's weren't the only ones. Supposedly, Caviezel was actually signed by Warners. The whole situation was just a clusterbleep of rumors. On boards like this, the trons were peaking and everybody was on edge.

It's been a little while and my memory is a little rusty...so sorry to ask you to for repeat info...but hey it's this or the usual ping pong game of is TW in or out...

Could you refresh my memory for me...What was the statement TW made at the Teen Choice Awards? Wasn't it a sly answer to a Superman movie or upcoming movie he was to be in--related question?

Also, didn't Caviezel say in an interview somewhere that he was upset about the Superman thing at how they did him. Like you mentioned he was supposedly signed and then they went another direction?

And I agree, Pat do you have some type of Superman news folder stored on your HDD divided and cross referenced by actor/year/movie/BS or something??

It is amazing at the quotes and links you can dig up.

Here ya go:

"Smallville" star Tom Welling told reporters at Sunday's Teen Choice Awards that he's signed on for a movie but is not allowed to discuss it, fueling rumors that he will star in "X-Men" director Bryan Singer's new Superman movie. "I'm sworn to secrecy," Welling said with a smile. "It's too early." A spokesperson for Warner Bros. said the role has not yet been cast.

This is a long story. Lemme come back to it later (food's on the table and hubby's hungry.)

LOL! Yeah, basically. I've got quite a few folders, not to mention a bleepload of bookmarks. ;)

Be back in a bit...

Yeah, now I remember about the TW quote.

Don't stress over the Caviezel thing, just curious. I remember reading bits here and there about it, but couldn't remember if it was rumor or had been confirmed some what. As you can see I have been more of lurker around these parts than a poster for a few years.

Thanks again!

ya know I dont hate the idea of Jason Statham as Batman. He's got the gruff angry thing going on and he can fight like a madman

I kinda like the idea of Statham, if it's a treatment were we'd only see Batman in costume. I can't see him as Bruce Wayne, though.

Pat, I've been lurking for some time now, and it never ceases to amaze me at the wealth of info. you have at your disposal.

In my experience It's not so much the info that Pat has at her disposal, as much as it is her use of it. There are a good many helpful people on these boards, but Pat is damned near always the first to jump to help someone with info. If knowledge is power, then Pat could take down big blue.

... Good thing she uses her power for good.

I believe there was actual video of this too. I'll go look for it.

Just got thru catching up on 2+ days of posts and it seems we're still at square one! My computer crashed on Sat. and I have been in withdrawal mode waiting to get back online. (I just knew the big announcement would come and I'd miss it.) Anyway, I don't have any inside info and I'm admittedly biased but in my heart of hearts I just really think Tom Welling is going to be Superman in JLA. Noone else makes any sense to me given all that we know.

1. Tom embodies the part. He has the look, the talent, the experience and noone deserves it more.

2. Superman Returns was a disappointment. We wouldn't even be having this discussion if that was not a fact. Yeah, it made its money back but it did not break box office records and did not inspire a new generation of fans which was the plan. It did however split the already-existig fan base.

3. WB still wants a piece of the comic/movie world pie. And now they want vindication for the misstep they made.

4. Welling was/is the fan favorite overall to portray this beloved character. He was considered last time but in the end they wanted their cake (a successful TV show) and to eat it too (a successful movie franchise). Not wanting to sacrifice their #1 show they took a chance and tried to have both.

5. This time around the TV show has already passed the 100th episode mark and is gearing down to the final moment when Clark becomes Superman to the world. It is actually at a point to be used as the perfect lead in/promotion vehicle for the movie.

6. This movie is a great opportunity for Tom. If it is successful it opens all kinds of doors for him. He is already typecast as Superman. This doesn't mean he can't break out of that but in order to do it he has to be given the chance and offered roles to play. The real problem is he may be typecast as a tv actor if he doesn't get a big break soon. This movie moves him into a whole new category.

7. If WB wants Tom they can make it happen. The bottomline in Hollywood is always money. This movie is their big money maker for summer 2009. They already have a great script and a reputable director. Now they have to get the casting right and the pieces will all fall into place.

I'll be glad when this wait is over.
And if my sheer force of will could have anything to do with it we'd be celebrating right now! :super:

... and I have first hand knowledge to back that up everyone. Pat's a winner, when it comes to resources. :yay:

Wow Twistim!! Fantastic post, I just hope that WB is looking at the same things here.

Not finding it (did I hallucinate seeing that clip?), but I did run across this:

http://www.superherohype.com/batman/index.php?id=1911

Remember the uproar over that? :D I don't remember if it was ever revealed who did it, but what a way to stir the pot!

LOL! I remember that. :woot: Mr Kent. :ninja:

It would be great if you could find that clip from the TCA's, I dont think I've ever seen that particular interview before.
