Tom Welling as Superman

Not finding it (did I hallucinate seeing that clip?), but I did run across this:

http://www.superherohype.com/batman/index.php?id=1911

Remember the uproar over that? :D I don't remember if it was ever revealed who did it, but what a way to stir the pot!
OMG...so long ago. That was...crazy, to say the least. It feels weird to be entering somewhat similar territory, though perhaps not as entertaining. All we keep getting are conflicting statements from various "in the know" parties. Gah. Something juicy has gotta come out soon about this movie. They can't cast forever if they actually have any hope of actually getting to the production stage.

I think Warner Bros. may be going as crazy as we are because they are backed up against a wall in a sense. We don't know if Tom was being considered or was aproached for the role in the initial stages or as someone mentioned he might have been and then things fell through. But thanks to the leaks, even if they wanted to go with another guy or go back to Brandon, they can't because of the huge publicity and support that Welling's name has generated.
Now they can try to milk the publicity as much as they want before crushing everybody's dreams like the last time but they (at least we all hope they did) have learned the error of their ways and want to try and please the fans and that means getting Welling by any means necessary.
And if wasn't ever considered, there's enough evidence from all these polls and websites and comments.
Remember before Welling's name was thrown in the mix, there was barely any discussion on the JLA movie, it was even though of as rumor. After Welling was mentioned it was free publicity of the likes Warner could never buy. And in 2004 the same thing had already happaned and they seazed that publicity but failed to capitalize it. They never thought their movie and their choice would be rejected by a large number of the public.
That (the publicity and public that Welling brings) deserves attention and they would be idiots if they hadn't noticed it by now. I believe they will try to get Tom. If now they will have to prepare for a backlash, possibly bigger than the last time and face the possibility of a big rejection of this movie that up until Welling was thought of as a huge rushed up joke.
Welling's name brings credibility to the project and someone that ppl really want to see as a super-hero in the theaters. He may not be a hude draw in other movies but the name Welling and Superman are guaranteed money in the bank. I would bet everything I own in it.

the name Welling and Superman are guaranteed money in the bank. I would bet everything I own in it.

Wait wait wait. You would -bet- everything you have that someone who's already characterized as Superman, would bring in money if they actually cast him as Superman? Someone tie this man down. He can't be thinking rationally.

Of course, but Welling only spent three weeks shooting his scenes.

Excerpt from Variety, 1/25/06:
"I did 'The Fog' in a fog," Welling laughs. "They shot for a month before I got there and it was shot at night and really fast."

There's another article/interview out there where it is stated specifically. When I find it, I'll post it. But I do remember being surprised by that because he was the star of the film. He did his CBTD2 scenes in ten days. He might not have been the full on star of that pic, but it was a much bigger production than The Fog.

Anyhoo... the point is, they can make it work if they want to. That goes for Welling OR Routh.

Thanks Pat for posting this article:word:

As for TW being able to shoot THE FOG and juggle SV, as we know both were shot in Vancouver so even though it was probably pretty tiring with proper scheduling The FOG got done. Where they filmed THE FOG was like a 10 minute speed boat ride from where SV does "on location" shoots as well so that helped ALOT I bet. What a sceduling nightmare if TW does get JLA if its shooting in OZ. 16 hours from Vancouver!

I remember last year at the beginning of season 6 that Alison Mack did an interview with Chuck at KRYPTONFAN and she mentioned SR and Tom.

If I remember right she said she was glad that Tom didn't do the movie because SV would have been over but he would have made a great Superman:) She also said she knew BR.

"Although there was chatter early on about his taking on the bigscreen role of Superman (which ultimately went to newcomer Brandon Routh), there were too many conflicts, scheduling and otherwise for Welling to be cast, says Gough.....

"I think if he had ever been offered the movie, it would have killed the series," admits Gough. "I don't think Warner Bros. would have done that on a corporate level.....

Welling, 28, is coy when discussing the negotiations that took place. If he's disappointed at not being the new Superman, he won't say.

"It's such an odd thing to talk about. There were so many issues that would have had to have been dealt with -- scheduling, the future of the show -- for it to have happened.""

Doesnt this confirm that WB did want TW for SR? And that negotiations did take place between them, NOT necessarly with BS?
That means that Welling WAS talking about SR at the TCAs. :)

It confirms that WB wants Welling for Superman, and has for YEARS.

SR wasnt "SR" at the time of the TCA's, it was still McG's project at that point.

The only one Tom ever fessed to talking to was Ratner.

Alex Ross painted that for Wizard 155 (I have the issue)

and then he also painted this for it:

Has Robert at IESB said anything since he was talking with Emijay? When I go to his site. All I read are verbal jabs between Welling & Routh fans.

Was it this 1?

That's all I got though.

Hmm.. that looks like it, but it was MTV interviewing him, not E. That's the same night though. I wish James was around, he'd either have it or know for sure that I'm wrong. Maybe Pat or Trip will remember.

I have a ridiculous number of vid clips saved, but it would take forever to go through them all. I'm not nearly as organized as Pat with my stuff. :O

SR wasnt "SR" at the time of the TCA's, it was still McG's project at that point.

Actually, it was. BS was announced as director in August. The TCAs were at the end of August.

Welling's name has been metioned for every Superman project since Smallville debuted.

TODAY, the studios are announcing some of their pre-strike films for 2009. From greenlighting, to casting, to directors. Varitey and HR are reporting on Land of the Lost, Terminator 4, Star Trek, and Thundercats.

WB should be announcing the cast for JLA........ANY DAY NOW! :)

does anyone remember the Paul Walker for Superman rumours? Gaaaaaahhhhh!

That was NOT a rumor. He was one of the three final contenders for Superman before Ratner was fired. The other two were Branden Fraiser and Matthew Bomer.

Talk about dodging a bullet.

And we think the boards are bad now.
If he had been the man of steel I think SHH would have imploded.

So I am assuming that WB have plugged all the leaks they had because we havent heard a word since like 2004?
