Tom Welling as Superman

lol hey pat I put out a bet there for a one week ban if Welling is not cast. I am ready to take the fight to the end
Baahaa! You didn't? TE, that's a risky bet y'know? I mean, I re-heeeeely want it to be TW (duh!), but I wouldn't bet a week's ban on it. LOL

That said, I can't see a mod actually BANNING you for a week. I don't think they'd do that. Maybe a voluntary ban from you - like not posting for a week. But that's kinda stupid too. You're too funny. ;)

I think it's great that there's an actual JL forum, but like the DC Film's forum, I won't be posting there much until the announcement. There's WAY too much negativity there right now, and that doesn't float my boat. I want to ENJOY discussing the film, not battle with people over it. So I'll just sit back and wait for something "real" to finally be announced. At least then, we're not arguing things that aren't even confirmed yet. What's the point, y'know? This applies to the casting more than anything.

This is no fight, kid. This is a war. Justice League is just a single battle.
Some fans will never, accept Welling as Superman. It's a never ending struggle.

So tell me soldier..... Are you prepared for war?

LOL! Here's the thing - remember people generally congregate with other like opinionated people. If you have opinions that are in stark contrast to those of the majority, you're probably not going to enjoy conversation there for very long - not unless you're the type of person who enjoys arguing and getting nowhere.

Even in our own little niche, group opinion among SV fans is splintered. If you have strong opinions about one or more characters, chances are there's a BBS somewhere out there where a majority of people posting share your opinion. And most of them will be fairly elitist about it.

Fans are fans, and Superman fans are no different.

Smallville has been on the air for seven years. Some Superman fans love the show. Some hate it. I've never met a Supes' fan that doesn't have an opinion about SV, though interestingly enough, there ARE SV fans that are indifferent to Superman. For example, if you take a stroll over to K-Site, you'll find polls that ask users their opinions of the Superman costume, and if fans want to see it. Not when they want to see it, but if they want to see it. Some users think it looks silly and can't imagine their Clark Kent wearing such a thing. (There's irony in there somewhere.)

SV fans are often seen as the red-headed stepchildren of Superman fandom, and that's why you'll see 'tudes on various Superman specific message boards. For a show that is the longest running live action superhero series ever (not just Superman - but ALL super heroes), it's still not taken very seriously by elitist Superman fans. They say it targets teenyboppers (it doesn't), that it'll be forgotten quickly (it won't), and that very few people even know about it, much less watch it (nonsense!) So the very idea that the star of the show would even be considered for the role of Superman in a film - never mind actually be asked - is ludicrous to these people. And until an announcement is made, that is the opinion you'll continue to see be held.

So, given existing attitudes, here's my predictions for after the announcement:

Welling is not cast in JL:
SV/TW fans who are okay with another actor in the role (provided he's phenomenal) will be fine with it - just like any other fan who wants a good movie despite not getting their cast preference.

SV/TW fans who ONLY wanted to see TW in the role will be bummed and vocal about it. There will be some resentment, but everything should return to "normal" eventually. Technically, nothing will have changed for these people. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. SV will continue to grace their living rooms every Thursday, this forum will still exist, and discussion about TW as Superman will continue - much as it has done so for years.

Welling is cast in JL:
Picture... downtown Beirut on a warm, summer day. SV fans are going to come out of the woodwork in droves. JL boards from here to Timbuktu are going to swarm with hundreds of "new" fans, and they're going to drive those elitist Superman fans I referenced earlier completely NUTS. :p

^ I'm not kidding. :)

Regardless of what happens, this thread won't move. It's applicable to TW's character in SV since Clark is also Superman - just minus the tights and flights. Another thread would be created in the JL forum for the JL Superman. If that Superman is played by Tom Welling too, so be it. I think the Hype can handle two threads for TW as Superman. The Hype's users... well... that might be a different story. ;)

Excellent post Pat. Another thing to take into account to is that the posters on SHH arent really indicative of the fanbases. It's ashame to say it, but SHH for the most part has the reputation around the internet of being a haven for overly-opinionated, nasty fanboy whiners. It's the reason that you see the reasonable but hardcore fans starting their own separate sites for their particular films.

It's why there is a BlueTights.net to talk about Superman. Every last one of us over there met in the SHH Superman forums but were driven away by the utter insanity that ensued after the Casting Wars ended. The fact that this place is about all heroes also seems to foster a lot of the "fanboy peeing in other fanboy's pools" syndrome that you see to some extent here from our "cousin's" over yonder since its so easy to throw crap over the fence here LOL. The same thing happened with the first Hulk film which gave birth to Hulkmovie.com, and Batman with increase in popularity of BoF. Dont be surprised to see the same with JLA.

Smallvile is a bit of a different animal here in that this place isnt really a lightning rod for the Smallville fandom, that's K-Site's distinction and we tend to get a lot of their "refugees" here. This is one of the few civil boards on here.

The thing I liken it most to is the "official messageboards" of sports teams. When you go on them they tend to be overrun by lunatics and trolls. The best boards to talk about sports, and the ones where you get a true feel for peoples impressions on the team, tend to be the ones run by the fans.

god. I just tried going back over to the JL boards. It's funny how some people completely flip out when someone posts a picture of Welling.

What's the deal? if someone posted a picture of Routh, you wouldn't see a Smallville fan scream "STOP IT! ROUTH IS NOT SUPERMAN! WAAAAAAAH!"
I just don't get it.

Why are you guys acting like people don't already have an opinion of Welling? He has baggage whether it's good or bad. I talk about Smallville here at school and people laugh and talk about how bad it is. THe day Welling is announced two conversations are going to happen, "What happened to the other guy, what's his name?" and "Isn't that the guy from the tv show?"

So they'll remember the other guy, but they won't remember his name? LOL.

No, the only thing that's gonna be said is, "Finally".

Sadly, Routh isn't a household name. He'll have Superman attached to his bio for another year or so.

Hate to tell you, but if the reaction I get about Welling is any indication. People won't be going to see him at the theater.

If you're talking about your school or group of friends that's hardly an indication of anything.

Really? that's strange.

I've never met anyone who dislikes Smallville in day to day life. I've met plenty of people who've never watched an episode. But nobody who dislikes it. I do know a good many people who've been wanting Welling in the suit for a long, long time, though.

Considering I'm apart of the age group that this movie is targeting. It does. I don't think Welling will repel people, but they aren't going to get up to go see him. I can't believe how many times i've had the "I used to watch it until I realized it was just Dawson Creek" conversation and have to keep my mouth shut.

Part of what JL has going for it is the piece of the pie idea. Don't like Welling, but i do want to see Flash or WW. Just pick a slice and enjoy the movie.

Different views, but..

considering that you have no plans to watch JL I don't see how this is any relevant actually.. lol. :)

That's the same thing I said about SR. I never met anyone that hated it. The only complaint i heard was " I want to see Superman fight someone." The movie was ok to them. Not Batman and Robin like some say.

I'm a big fan of Smallville, but it's kind of embarassing.

I've heard that. I've brought up the subject with non suspecting "victims." Honestly, my experience has been: "that makes sense," and "why didn't they do that the first time?' [cast Welling as Superman in the film.] My sister-in-laws fiancé is a HUGE Batman fan. He's not big on Superman at ALL! Doesn't hate him or anything, he's just indifferent. Even HE has said "that's what I *thought* they'd do."

If you look at casting Welling as Superman from outside the box - I know it's hard because we're decidedly IN the box - it makes "sense" to a non fan and general audience. They know SV is this show about "young Superman," so they think why wouldn't the studio use "that kid" in the film too? THESE are the statement I've heard from people - total non-fans with no real interest in a Superman or Justice League film outside of something "cool" to see when it comes out. They don't give two poops about the mythology or how the characters are "treated." They just want to have fun at the movies. THESE are the people that Warner Bros. is targeting. To argue that fact is like pissing in the wind: fruitless - and a completely stupid endeavor. LOL ;) :p

Before I say another word, please describe what age group you are speaking of.

Count me as one of the "refugees"!

I review for KryponSite and I don't hardly ever post on that forum.

I think that probably speaks volumes in and of itself.

Well, for Tom I think it's either love him or hate him.

I think most people who don't think he's a good actor either have never seen the show or aren't really paying attention when they do.

I honestly believe (if he gets it) that once Tom pulls on the tights on the big screen, he'll prove to everyone how good he really is.

The OMAC storyline is a pretty dark one. You got Maxwell Lord mind-controlling Superman to turn him against his friends with the intent to kill them all.

That's pretty dark and we've all seen how much Tom seems to love doing darker stories. Some of his best acting has come from episodes where Clark isn't himself: Labyrinth, all the Red-K episodes, Transference, Splinter, Blank, Bizarro...

Usually it's those episodes that are the ones that have Tom's detractors say "he did pretty well," even if only reluctantly.

Even ones where Clark is himself but that have been darker, Reckoning & Vengeance for example, he seems to shine brighter.

If he gets this part, with a seemingly crazed Superman out to kill his friends, I am convinced that Tom Welling will absolutely own the role.

I am convinced that finally people will see how good he is.

:super: :super: :super:

I just hope it's enough to get more people onto his side but he will probably never please everyone even if he does totally nail the part.

:(

You know, the "I have met or the people I know" arguments don't make any sense, it's OK to get different perspectives from different age groups and all, but I wanna look at the bigger picture here, I'm not gonna take into consideration what someone says on a message board about his friends or what his parents think about this or that, be it positive or negative.. it's just irrelevant.

At the end, we're all AT THIS POINT FOR A REASON, that speaks for itself.

I hear ya. The people who dislike Welling always seem to talk to everyone else that does. It's like when any movie unspools, the lovers are always in theaters where the people cheer, and haters are always in the theaters where people walk out or boo and throw their sno caps at the screen. They're ALL lying.

Yeah according to ratings about h million wouldn't mind him in the suit

All this hate elsewhere is why I only posted the link to my JL promo here. :)

Any news from anyone???

Robert Sanchez has posted twice in the past hour.....

Everyone is asking him to post the cast list.....he keeps sidestepping the answer. Asking if the site should change the layout of the board...yada, yada, yada.....

VERY SOON FOLKS......:)

And I mean like we are going to know SOOOOON.
