Smallville Tom Welling - Clark Kent/Superman : The Man Behind The Cape

I am very big fan of Clark Kent. He's one awesome character who turned into Superman. Till came to know about Smallville television series, which is more interesting that narrates us about the young Clark Kent. Best Simply Best :yay:

Ah Tom and Maggie together again lol. Hopefully this on-screen pairing of theirs will be better than the last.

Do you guys think the Smallville Season 11 comic suit could have actually worked in live action?

Sure. No red trunks, it would've worked just fine in the Finale.

1. Tom Welling As Clark Kent
It takes a lot to cast Superman perfectly but to find the right guy to accurately portray awkward 14-year old Clark Kent all the way into adult life as Superman is a totally different story, but did they ever make the right decision in Tom Welling. Welling was 24 at the time he was playing 14-year old Clark but it made no difference because of the honest charm he brought to the character. Much like Christopher Reeve’s ability to convince us of his bumbling nature while all the while we knew the superhero was inside, Welling had the same effect in Smallville. He could go from a tongue-tied lovestruck teenager to a strong and dependable hero in moments.

We miss a lot about the show, and a lot of the actor’s takes on their characters, but what we miss most was the consistency Welling brought to his role as Clark Kent/Superman. What makes it harder is that Welling did not go on to mega-stardom, leaving us to watch re-runs of Smallville anytime we’re feeling a little depressed he’s not on our screens.

Tom certainly likes to keep out of the limelight these days, asides from the premieres for Draft Day and Parkland he hasn't been in the media much at all. Wonder has he anything else lined up besides 'The Choice'

Came across this weird news bit on TMZ yesterday.

Tom Welling: Super Rich Divorce Settlement

Tom Welling's divorce is now final, and the settlement is unusual in the spousal support dept.

The "Smallville" star's 10 year marriage to Jamie Welling is officially over, and according to legal docs Tom has to pay spousal support for 5 years, but not a set amount.

The 38-year-old actor has to shell out 20% of his net professional income to Jamie, but there are limits. Anything Tom earns north of $5 mil a year is his and his alone.

So, you ask, is Tom that loaded? Apparently, yes. He's worked consistently -- most recently in "Draft Day" -- and according to docs, he and Jamie own a Florida horse farm, and homes in Florida and Massachusetts. They have a bunch of fancy cars and lots of other stuff.

BTW ... as for the farm, she gets all the horses, including Springstein, Donatello, Zoozee, Cliff and Tomorrow. He gets to keep Tomahawk.

I actually think that it'd be really cool if they did get him to be Superman on the show. I've found myself constantly thinking that the vibe & atmosphere of Supergirl at times perfectly reflects Smallville, so I could see it working out.

From what he said above, it basically seem like Tom is saying "they haven't offered it to me yet but if they do, I'd be game." It's not out of the realm of possibility for him to get the offer.

After all, he was offered Superman Returns, which he turned down so that Smallville could continue & so that no one attached to the show would lose their job.

And maybe I'm biased too because I've always been a huge fan of Welling & his Clark Kent/Superman is still my favorite live action interpretation.

Really? wow I never heard any thing about him being offered superman returns.

Actually he wasn't offered Superman Returns that was a rumour at the time and an April fools prank. Singer never offered it to him, WBs may have but not Singer. Also WBs we going to wrap up Smallville for the film universe but Bryan Singer convinced them not to as his film was set further down the line in Superman's career.

He'd have been a great big screen Clark Kent/Superman though.

While Smallville usnt my definitive take in the character it is a true favourite of mine, Smallville us my favourite TV show of all-time.

Usually when they cast actors famous for a certain role, they have them playing a different character, latest example being Laura Vandervoort (she's going to be Indigo). I don't think they're going to cast Tom as Superman, besides, he didn't even wanted to wear the suit in Smallville:

Just out of professional curiosity, does that mean we'll see Tom Welling in some spandex tights next year? I know the fans really want to see that.

Brian Peterson: Probably not as soon as you expect, but you never know. The one person who doesn't want to see that unfortunately is Tom Welling, so that's a bigger conversation.

Tom is not really a Superman fan, he was always for the infamous no flights, no tights rule, with the ridiculous result of everyone flying except Clark.

Tom Welling: “This needed to be a show about Clark Kent, not about Superman,” the actor said. “That was always the rule: No flights, no tights. When we got into Season 5, they started to say, ‘Well… maybe…’ But I always maintained that’s not the show. Thank god Peter Roth [chief executive of Warner Bros. Television, which produced Smallville] knew that and always championed in our favor.

They could cast him as a villain though, you can tell he had fun being Clark Luthor and red Kryptonite Clark.

I think it was more a case of him wanting to stay true to what the show was. People often say he didn't want to wear the suit but there was never any suit for him to wear.

There's conflicting reports, but this is something I've heard as well. I might be remembering this wrong, but in the retrospective at the end of the series, Erica Durance talked about how much she would bug Tom about wearing the suit, and I think she said he was even against doing the Bumbling Clark Kent character because he was so protective of that character and the essence of the show, that to transform it into a Superman show just didn't feel right.

But like I said, there were conflicting reports. Some same he was actually a diva and very difficult to work with. I listen to the Quiver podcast, where they are set up in Vancouver where Arrow shoots now, and they rarely speak highly about Tom, in regards to what his reputation behind the scene was.

It is true, Tom is not a very open person, he's too guarded, he barely does any interviews, etc. Henry Cavill and Brandon Routh are real Superman fans and like sharing with the fans, they're not afraid of others.

I can understand the claim that some made about Tom, saying that he was really scared of being typecast in a similar way to George Reeves or even Christopher Reeve. Not to mention, with how tragic their lives turned out, there was all the talk about the Superman curse, and I could see Tom being scared of that and thinking that if he wore the costume, it would be a permanent stamp on his career and maybe even life.

But there's no real way to be certain about any of this since Tom is still a relatively quiet person. It wasn't until Amell started doing all of his Facebook videos that I realized how much of a difference it makes to have a guy who is very engaging with his fans, or comic fans in general. Like, you could love or hate Arrow as much as you want, but you can't really knock Amell or what kind of person he is based on how willing he is to be out there.

As I stated before, If Welling was called to be Superman on Supergirl, it's imperative he is accompanied by Erica Durance's Lois Lane, they already established that they work incredibly well together and it would be a nice nod to the fans who waited 10 season for Clark to become Superman on Smallville and 7 seasons for Lois to end up with Clark.

Tom might be offered a role in the series but I highly doubt it will be Superman much like Laura Vandervoort is guest starring as Indigo (female Brainiac)

Tom was never offered SR. At one point in like 2003-2004 when Smallville was off and running he met with Brett Ratner about the role in the Superman movie that Ratner was tied to direct at that point. Tom and Ratner figured that for him to take the Superman role that Smallville would've had to end and neither him nor WB wanted that.

Ratner later rolled off the project, and then Bryan Singer was hired, and the rest is history.

He later popped up as a possible casting choice for Supes in George Miller's Justice League film that never happened, but it was due mostly to an erroneous report by Latino Review.

It would be awesome to see him on Supergirl even if it's not as Superman. Radio KAL suggested he be cast as Ultraman, Tom was always good as the villain so I think that would be great.

Actually I think one of the biggest compliments I can give Tom whether it was as Red K Clark, Black K Kal, Lionel in Clark's body, Bizarro or Ultraman whilst most of them were just evil version of Clark he played every one abit differently. You didn't feel like you were watching the same character everytime.
