Tombstone

Yeah, seeing The Pink Panther and A Prairie Home Campanion reminds me of how badass Kevlin Kline was in that movie, and hey, any other movie!

Tombstone has a great cast going for it, but Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp tops it in every way. Kevin Costner owns Kurt Russel's portrayal of Wyatt Earp, and Dennis Quaid even out-does Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday.

bump.

this thread made me go out and purchase the special edition dvd. that's how awesome this movie is. and it Costner's Wyatt Earp hasn't got s**t on Tombstone.

I love this movie....it's basically a superhero movie in the guise of a western.

I admit, I haven't seen many westerns, but I love the whole look and feel and mise-en-scene of the western. I just find it attractive, and this movie nails that.

I love everything about it- the cast is pitch perfect, the dialogue, the pace, the action- everything about this movie comes together perfectly.

Show the love for a fine movie here.

How is it a superhero movie?

If you called it a 'comicbook western' then I'd agree.

I haven't watched Earp in about 100 years but Tombstone rocks for all the reasons already given. Most notably Val Kilmer.

Sure it was a little stylish and maybe not 100% historically accurate but it's still an awesome movie with an awesome cast. It's definitely not a "wannabe".

My fight's not with you, Holliday.

I beg to differ, sir. We started a game we never got to finish. "Play for Blood," remember?

Oh that. I was just foolin' about.

I wasn't.

I liked Tombstone. But it's one of those movies that I keep passing on when I see it. But I will buy it.

As for best western- Once Upon a Time in The West

this movie is a good time. i liked it a lot more than wyat earp with costner. I thought Val Kilmer was cool as Doc Holiday. which is a great hero name.

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Haven't seen it in years, but I'll get around to watching it again someday.

Yeah, they had all the great names back then.

Yes, I love Tombstone! Everything from the wonderful dialogue to the cinematography to the acting to the action to the score! It isn't in the same league as say GBU or Red River or some of those types of westerns, but its a great modern western and pure entertainment.

RIP George Cosmatos!

You are so wrong. SO wrong.

WTF? The best western? It wasn't even the best western of that decade (the decade that saw Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven!).

Not to mention:

-Stagecoach
-Red River
-Fort Apache
-She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
-The Searchers
-The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
-Shane
-High Noon
-The Man From Laramie (any fan of Firefly/Serenity needs to see this movie and Stagecoach)
-How the West was Won (admittedly not the best)
-True Grit
-A Fistfull of Dollars
-For a Few Dollars More
-The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
-High Plains Drifter
-Once Upon a Time in the West
-Silverado

Sorry, i like Tombstone, but I don't think it aged well. I own it on SE DVD and have watched it for years. It is a good entertaining movie. But after seeing it a few times I think the real rewatch value comes from Val Kilmer's performance, but not much else. To be fair I think Sam Elliot and Michael Beihn were quite good in supporting and don't get enough credit for holding the movie up at the edges. But Russell as Earp? Paxton as Morgan? Dana Delany? The whole last half hour other than Kilmer vs. Behin?

It is good but eh...I find the Costner one worth revisitng. More historically accurate and just a deeper movie. it is too long and does lack structure in the second and third acts, but it is a very well made movie, wonderfully acted all around (except, surprisingly by Mardsen's forgettable take of Virgil) and a well crafted Lawarance Kasdan movie.

I suppose it is because the characters feel more realistic and thus more human and there is just more to chew on scene for scene in that movie.

I'd take Dances With Wolves and Unforgiven from the same decade over both though. Open Range too.

P.S. Kilmer is more crowd pleasing but Quaid was a better Holliday. He unfortunately had less to do than Kilmer, but made more with it. I like them the same at the end but Kilmer was playing an anti-superhero, not Doc Holliday.
