TPBs Bought/Thought Thread

Picked up my first Hellboy trade, Seed of Destruction, as well as the first volume of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the Iron Man: Mask in the Iron Man TPB.

I found that all three were very good reads, but LoEG seems to be kind of overrated whenever I hear other people talking about it (needs more Griffin & Hyde awesomeness), although it's still perfectly entertaining.

Read Volume II. You'll get your Griffin & Hyde fix, trust me.

I picked up Black Hole by Charles Burns. Now I just have to read it after I finish another book and others, since I doubt my stack of books will ever shrink

recently finished:

Spider-man: Reign - This was a pretty good read. I liked the artwork, it seemed to pay homage to Miller while still maintaining its own style. I liked the Miller and Klaus references as well. It did seem a lot like DKR but a lot less deep and thought provoking. Kind of just a watered down DKR with Spider-man. I didn't really like the whole Venom/Symbiote reveal at the end though.

Infinity Gauntlet - Really awesome read! Finally got around to it. All I can say is Thanos is bad-ass. He rocked all the cosmic people easily and had a lot of good moments. I wish he didn't screw himself over so much though. I really liked the Thanos quest as well, I read that before IF and it shows some more Thanos bad-assery.

Fanstic Four 1,2,3,4 - I really liked this book. Jae Lee is an amazing artist and I can't get enough of his work. I liked the uneasy alliance between Doom, Namor, and Mole Man. Also, Jae Lee's moleman is the best rendition of that character i've seen!

working on:
Batman: Dark Detective
Avengers: Kree/Skrull War

I just bought the Frank Miller Daredevil Omnibus. I should get it any day now,I've been told I got a good deal, since I don't have any Daredevil comics at all and I want to read essential stories about the character.

I just bought Brian K. Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad. Here be my thoughts...

Eff you, Brian K. Vaughan! Your tragic tale of a family of lions living in war-torn Baghdad has touched my soul and broken my heart! You made me genuinely care about the main characters, and feel for them in their every plight! I laughed! I cried! It was one of the best graphic novels I'd read in probably years.

How dare you, sir. How dare you write something that is now on my top 10 list of must-read graphic novels.

You should read Infinity War next, which they amazingly gave a trade. It's the direct sequel to IG and well worth reading if you enjoyed it. Lots more Thanos stuff.

Yeah, it was pretty awesome.

Fear Agent volume 1 was awesome... until the last page, which was ****ing infuriating. I gotta track down the second volume today at the shop. :o

Hulk Gray - 9/10 - Sale's Hulk is so strange and bizarre, very unique take.As with most of Loeb's collabs with Sale, this was close to perfection.

Hawkman Rise of the Golden Eagle - 10/10 - Johns' and Graymiotti's 40+ issue run on Hawkman is one of my favorites. The run had it all and really showed why Hawkman is one of the DCU's best and most badass.

Flash: Return of Barry Allen - 10/10 - I love Waid.Everything he's done from Kingdom Come,JLA Year One,Flash and GL:Brave and the Bold to the current Brave and the Bold series have been some of DC's finest. This book really emphasized the whole legacy aspect and character of the Flash, Wally and Barry.I found it more emotional than I expected and LaRoque's depicition of these speedsters' abilites in action are mind blowing.I might have to check out the rest of Waid's Flash run if it's as awesome as this book was.

The rest of Waid's run is easily the best Flash run ever. He's about 75% responsible for the character Wally is today.

Also,it's pretty obvious where the Hulk and Iron Man movies are taking this secret "crossover" scene from.

Oh. Okay. That just came out of nowhere, so I had no idea what you were talking about.

I bought "Titans East". Been seeing a few people who are really down on it, so i didn't know what to expect, but I actually enjoyed it. Real high-quality art, especially for the first few issues. And there was solid characterisation across the board.

This is actually the first "Teen Titans" trade I've read. So perhaps this is why I enjoyed it while longtime Titans readers hated it. Either way, it's made me a "Teen Titans" fan, and I'm interested in reading more.

Hellblazer: Original Sins - I first heard about Hellblazer thanks to the Dangerous Habits mini in my Constantine DVD. I bought this book and quickly fell in love with the series. John Constantine isn't your typical comic character. He is a complex man and is more human than 90% of other comic characters I've read.

Identity Crisis - Amazing. Simply amazing. I wasn't much of a comic book reader until I came across this. This book is mature and deals with what I've always wondered about: Why do heroes do what they do knowing what can go wrong if their identities are found out? The characterizations are the most amazing I've seen of the original continuity of DC Comics. Usually everything I read was bright and cheerful.

Kingdom Come - This is the best DC Comic I have ever read, hands down. The story does an amazing job of how Superman's ideals are becoming outdated in the majority of the publics opinion. The violent society in the book reflects the violent society we live in today. The bible passages add to the drama greatly. Also, the art is the best I've ever seen, period.

I also have Marvel Zombies and Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness. Both amazing books.

If that interested you, you should REALLY read the Brian Michael Bendis's run on Daredevil. It's all about exactly what you found appealing about IC

No offense, but how can you claim that the characterization was solid if this is your first exposure to the Teen Titans?

I meant that it took a bunch of characters - many of whom I didn't really know anything about - and made them interesting, and made me instantly like and care about them. After reading "Titans East", I went from a total Titans novice, to feeling like I have a good grasp of the ensemble.

Ah, okay. Most people noted Titans East for its horrific mischaracterization of practically everyone involved, so I was a little confused.

Good stuff and I second Eli's recommendation on the Bendis/Maleev run on Daredevil.
