New 'Transformers' bows No. 1 overseas
Pulls in $20 mil from U.K. and Japan locations

By Frank Segers

June 21, 2009, 03:46 PM ET
Playing in only two key foreign markets, Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" from director Michael Bay nonetheless premiered at No. 1 on the international circuit during the weekend, rolling up $20 million from 846 locations.

The sci-fi action sequel to "Transformers," Bay's 2007 smash that grossed $389 million overseas, opened at No. 1 in the U.K. ($14.1 million from 517 screens) and Japan ($5.8 million from 329 sites).

The explosive saga of shape-shifting robots, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, outperformed the original's opening weekends by 71% in the U.K. and 13% in Japan, according to Paramount. "Revenge" is set to open worldwide Wednesday.

btw. Can we use this thread to discuss/post the TF:ROTF boxoffice instead of multiple threads cluttered around discussing the same thing

That Japan number isn't anything special but it obviously still did well.

Well...after the crappy reviews continue to roll in...I don't kno whats gonna happen now...but I'll still say its gonna open big and probably perform like Pirates 2 but fall off a little and end up with 400m. I'll have to decide for sure after I see it tomorrow if I think that might change :D hope it doesn't but have a feeling it will :(

I think it still start big and drop quickly. I don't want to say it won't break $350 million, but I also don't think it will break more than the first.

Highly unlikely that 400M is happening. I'd say 350M, give or take 15M or so. Obviously I'm rooting for lower.

It's just before midnight on the east coast, and word on the street is that the film is tracking huge. Sellouts reported throughout the country. A $50 million+ Wednesday now looks extremely likely.

I tried to go to a midnight showing tonight without pre-ordering tickets. There were 2 theaters in my area, both showing it on 5 screens. That's 10 shows on a Tuesday night so I didn't worry about tickets or seating. They were all sold out when we got there an hour early at 11 pm. I've seriously never seen a line like this and I was part of the past 2 record breaking midnight premiers (Star Wars: Ep 3 and TDK). Neither was as outrageous as this. If this doesn't break records, it's simply because it wasn't a Friday release.

My theater had 3 midnight showings and all of them sold out before my friend could get home and buy them, which was at like 5 o'clock. I'm thinking TDK opening numbers for this.

I'm afraid to say that this movie might actually destroy alot of records this year. Opening 5 day totals, Opening week, fastest to $200 million US, and biggest worldwide opening ever. Not to mention that I think it has a shot at $480+ million domestically and a possible $600 million overseas. Which means I think it could easily beat TDK's worldwide number.

The reason I say this is because of a few facors:
1. Transformers was a hit with all audiences. Kids, teens, young adults, and even middle aged adults. Not only that but it was equally popular with girls/women as it was with boys/men. That means that literally everyone (outside of the senior community) is going to want to see this movie.
2. There's nothing else out right now. The field is so open that The Hangover and Up (which came out 3 weeks ago) are really Transformers only real competition. Plus during the weekend only 1 other movie opens wide. "My Sister's Keeper" (Warner Bros. attempt to counter market which I think will fail because like I said women want to see Tranformers also).
3. Ice Age and Public Enemies don't stand a chance. Ice Age is a dwindling franchise and Public Enemies (while it's been my most anticipate movie all year) just doesn't haven't mass appeal. Plus it's rated R.
4.Finally. Overseas audiences absolutely love stupid movies. Not only that but the go ape S%it for stupid sequals. Transformers is both stupid and a sequal so expect a HUGE overseas gross a la Spider-Man 3.

BTW: before anybody even says anything: Yes I have seen it and yes it was absolute horse crap. But it was shiney horse crap with huge audience-pleasing explosions so I know that's not going to stop it from making money.

Oh and the perhaps the worst part of the movie were all the attempts at being "funny". Serioulsy all the jokes were carbon copies of all the childish zingers from the first movie. Childish dog "jokes" (check), Mom cussing and being innapropriate (check), dad being embarassing (check), sam looking dumb in front of people (check), BumbleBee radio jokes (check), people getting fluids on them (check), guys in boxers (check), "hip" talking autobots (check). Matter of fact you could make a HUGE checklist of tons of things (not just jokes) that were direct carbon copies of the first. Most of all though the movie was utterly predictable anyone with a brain can guess what's going to happen from scene to scene.

But I digress.... like I said none of that is going to stop TF2 from making tons of money and breaking many records.

Highly unlikely that 400M is happening. I'd say 350M, give or take 15M or so. Obviously I'm rooting for lower.
Really? I think its highly likely 400 million will happen. There is practically NOTHING major coming out for the rest of the summer besides Harry Potter. Transformers is in a similar situation as POTC 2...Highly anticipated film released during a dull and boring summer.

I'm thinking this movie is going to pull $100 million domestically at the minimum.

2. There's nothing else out right now. The field is so open that The Hangover and Up (which came out 3 weeks ago)
Yeah, and Up isn't even released yet in a lot of countries and won't be until this fall.
3. Ice Age and Public Enemies don't stand a chance. Ice Age is a dwindling franchise
No, the last ice age made $652 million. And don't forget, Shrek The Turd made $799 million.
BTW: before anybody even says anything: Yes I have seen it and yes it was absolute horse crap. But it was shiney horse crap with huge audience-pleasing explosions so I know that's not going to stop it from making money.
It's going to make a lot of money, but with it sucking this much, Harry Potter will very likely beat it and it definitely won't do better than The Dark Knight.

The women didn't like this movie! What!?

I haven't seen it. The 20-second clips I did see made my brain leak out of my ears. I could feel my intelligence dripping away....

I do like watching stuff blow up real good. But not at my brain's expense.

HAHA I was joking...this movie is made for testosterone oozing males and fanboys.

I have no more hope for humanity. :o
Yeah...I kinda agree.:csad:

Agreed. Those 20 second clips were awful enough. I don't have to sit through 2 and half hours of s**t to know that it is in fact s**t.

Those clips and the fact that the first movie sucked ass are reasons enough for me to wait till DVD so my sister and I can openly make fun of the movie with disturbing other people.

Wait...so you were going on about the twins being racist and you hadn't even seen the movie???

My theater had 3 midnight showings and all of them sold out before my friend could get home and buy them, which was at like 5 o'clock. I'm thinking TDK opening numbers for this.

Nikki Finke says that the midnight showings for TF-2 brought in a tidy $16 million. It won't beat TDK's opening weekend record -- Wednesday and Thursday openings will burn off demand by the time Friday rolls around.

It's the third behind Revenge of the Sith's $16.9 million and TDK's $18.4 million midnight grosses. It's not adjusted for inflation, however. But it beat HP5's midnight showing grosses of $12 million and almost certainly will beat the $44 million opening day gross.

It could beat TDK's 5 day, 6 day, and 7 day (first week) totals.
TDK's numbers:
5 day:$203,773,518
6 day:$222,150,806
7 day:$238,615,211
8 day:$261,847,503
9 day:$290,119,997
10 day:$313,781,677
11 day:$324,299,793
12 day:$333,929,159

The 8, 9, and 10 day records should be safe but you never know. Also I think TDK's 11 and 12 day records are at risk because day 11 and 12 are a Sat and Sun for TF2 but were a Mon and Tues for TDK.

Note: these are just guesses made of the top of my head. I'm probably overestimating it a little.
I hope I am.

I think the bad reviews will eventually kill this historic run for Transformers..
