'Transformers' has $27 mil Thursday

'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'


Paramount's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is on its way to scoring one of the top five-day openings of all time at the worldwide box office.
The film's opening-day bow of $60.6 million from 4,234 runs at the domestic box office was the best ever for a Wednesday release and the second best of all time after that of "The Dark Knight" ($67.2 million).

Early estimates for Thursday show "Transformers 2" grossing another $27 million, bringing the two-day domestic cume to a bfo $87 million.

BTW $27 million is about a 55% Thursday drop. By comparison Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix (the previous opening day Wednesday holder) dropped 58.5% on Thursday.

Harry Potter went on to make $139 million after 5 days. That's about a 3.16 multiplier of its opening day. Since Transformers is holding slightly better we can use a 3.25 multiplier to get a pretty fair estimate of Transformers' 5 day total. Using that logic (and assuming these numbers are accurate) a good estimate for the 5 day total is $195 million (more or less).

Then again TF2 could be more front loaded than Order Of The Phoenix was so that number could be lower. "Experts" are predicting about $180 million for TF2's five day total.

UPDATE: Variety now puts TF2's Thursday gross at $28.6 million. That is a 53% drop. That's pretty good. That puts in more in line with "Return Of The King", which had a 50% Thursday drop. That movie went on to make $124 million in its 5 days which is a 3.59 multiplier on its $34.5 million opening day.

Using a generous 3.4 multiplier on TF 2's opening day number a fair estimate for its five day total is right about $205 million (which would break TDK's record). Again though this number may be too generous as Tranformers may be more front loaded than ROTK was. Still $200 million in its first five days is not out of reach.

FRIDAY PM: Sources tell me Paramount's Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen is looking like it took in $35M tonight from 4,234 theaters. The studio is now estimating its 3-day weekend cume bigger than expected: $105M vs $90M previously anticipated. That means the robot sequel can get to $195M for the 5-day opening total. "Any bump on Saturday and it has a shot at $200M," an exec excitedly emailed me tonight. Because $203.8M was The Dark Knight's 5-day record 2008 opening cume. New Line/Warner Bros' counter-programming with the simpering My Sister's Keeper looks like $5M today from 2,606 venues for an estimated $14M weekend.
