I just got home after a long, bad day at work. I've read the threads leading up to this now and I'm going to be echoing the same sentiment, but I am hoping that sharing the details of my quest today will at least perhaps provide some of you with a little amusement. In a nutshell, I went through hell and I need to share a bit.
As I said, a bad day. I was so, SO excited this morning I left a little early and even broke one of my cardinal rules: I went to Walmart (only place open that early). For some reason every trip to Walmart ends with me rehearsing terrible, terrible things in my head - things I want to do to people to hurt them. Anyway, I run in, straight to the music section, and look for the score. Nothing. I finally ask an employee... "Hi, I'm wondering if you have the new Transformers music cd that released today out yet". Notice how I specifically didn't use the word "score", or "movie". His immediate response? "The movie isn't out yet". Ok, I explain again, "No, a music cd - it came out today". His response, "Oh, the soundtrack - here...". I explain again... and after a little back and forth and much confusion on his part, he says "Let's ask so-and-so, she would know better".
We walk over to Miss So-and-so and I ask "Hi, I'm looking for the new Transformers music cd that came out today.". She says, "Um, the movie comes out next week". You know the rest... it ended with her looking at me with a completely blank face - then conceding that she didn't get anything in yet.
Disappointed, but figuring as much from Walmart, I left. It was worth a shot. So I get to work and now it's the usual stupid stuff in the morning, bad coffee from Dunkin' by a girl who apparently doesn't know what sugar and cream are, followed by clueless customers calling and calling, then topped off mid-morning by a BSOD (blue screen of death, for those that don't know) on my work computer. Turns out not one, but two drives crapped the bed - with all my data on it.
I worked on that all morning until lunch time when I got the brilliant idea - when I go out to pick up new hard drives, I will stop by Target and get the score! I was already in withdrawal as the promo has been playing non-stop in my office since I got it (on my now kaput computer). Now, I kept an eye on prices of various places and even though it was cheaper I knew I didn't want to order on line because the wait would KILL me, so I hit a brick and mortar store. On my way to Best Buy, I hit the Target store (attached building), go inside, and repeat the Walmart fiasco... when I can't find it on my own I ask the guy working there. His first response to my question "I don't think the movie came out yet". OMG, here we go again. After some back and forth, he says he opened today's shipment of stuff and nothing had to do with TF. Great. I figure I'll just get it at Best Buy with my drives.
I walk over to Best Buy, find the hard drives in a second, then look all over for the score. When I can't find it (surprise), I ask. I would tell you what the kid said to me when I asked but you already know. Still, not convinced he takes me over to the regular soundtrack. When he sees my disappointment he says "Let's look it up", and I got the clear feeling he didn't believe me (about a second music cd). Well, he looks it up through BB's own website and wouldn't you know it's the FIRST thing on the screen. He kinda cocked his head, then does a system search. NOTHING. He admits it shows that it should be in but has nothing. He checks a screen full of other Best Buy stores, a list of at least 10 stores - all show ZERO. I leave.
In the parking lot, I debate heading right over to the mall next door, but wise up and decide to call FYE first. I get the kid on the phone, ask him, and AGAIN I get the whole "The movie isn't due out til next week" thing. He finally understands and goes to look. A few minutes later he comes back on to tell me NADA. I hang up, and just for kicks I decide to call an FYE a few towns away. Now - after a brief and concise conversation I am SURE the kid on the phone knows what I mean. SCORE that came out TODAY, not SOUNDTRACK that's been out. He comes back and says "Yes, it's here". I go "SWEET!" ... Wait, this IS the SCORE, right? His response "Yep! It's the cd with Linkin Park and stuff - it's right in my hand".
Again, this town would have been about a 20 minute drive. After all this, I've had enough. I respond to him, just excitedly as I said "SWEET" and moment earlier, "Ryan - tell me, have you gone to lunch yet, or are you going to lunch soon? Listen, I am leaving now and if you're still out there when I get there I'd like to kick you in the balls".
I didn't really, but I wanted to. And with that I gave up. That is, until I left work. Leaving an hour late due to the computer issues, all the way home I am shaking my head and reflecting on how disappointed I am. I'm wondering if, when I get home, I'll jump on here and read the same or just read about everyone raving, listening to the cd's they now have. I can't describe it... except to say that it's a little like waking up on Christmas morning and finding out someone pissed on your face while you slept and burnt all your presents. ... Yes, that's close.
Well, I scan my brain for any place I may have missed - ANY. About 30 seconds from an exit I realize - BORDERS! It IS "Books and Music", after all - though I have NEVER purchased a cd there before (high prices). I jump off the highway, head into the store, and look. Nothing. Grudgingly I ask the guy at the counter. He goes "Yeah, I saw the soundtrack earlier...". I correct him, he thinks, then goes to the computer. Good boy. He looks it up, cocked his head, and goes "Hm, it SHOULD be here". I make sure it's the score by looking at the screen - it is. He tells me it shows that one came in. Yes, you read that right: ONE. He goes to a rack on wheels of items that are to be shelved and looks - invites me to look. Nothing. We head over to the "T" section of soundtracks. I look there while he checks out "R, S, U, and V". I ask why... he says "Cause sometimes people pick up stuff and put it back in the wrong place". Smart boy. As it becomes apparent it isn't there I just about give up. I thought he had too... then he says "hold one, I am going to check a few more places...". I tell him how much I appreciate his help and he takes off. I wait. I wait. 10 minutes I wait. I give up. He got sidetracked or forgot - whatever. I get on the phone and call Barnes and Nobles - I could tell you what they told me but you already know.
So, as I hang up the phone, I look up and here comes this guy from ACROSS the store, with something in his hand, waving it in the air. On his face is a big smile. I run at him, jump into the air and in one, fluid motion, snatch that mofo right out from his paws. Take that, grasshopper!
Not really, but I shook his hand before I even received the cd from me. I think I will send him a box of cookies tomorrow. The only one that came in - the only copy in the county as far as I'm concerned, and he got it for me. I spent the next half hour in my car in the parking lot, listening to that sumbeatch louder than I have ever listend to anything in my life. That includes pissing off my woman... I think I blew my BOSE (not like that! - sickos...).
That's my story. I still cannot believe what a PISS POOR distribution we got for something we waited SO long for, but it's ok. The cd was $19 for me though the other places were $15 or less, but I would have paid double for it at this point.
It IS worth it. I'm telling you, it is ... magical. I can't even begin to describe, but I will leave you with this sample... if what happens at 1:19 of "Arrival" doesn't make you wet your pants, just a little, you're not human. If you haven't completely closed your eyes when the angelic voices begin at 3:06 (Ironhide, the pool), you are deaf.
I leave you with that. I'm going to blow some more speakers now.
