The 1982 film Tron was not a major commercial success, but it became a pivot point in Hollywood history as the first feature film to use computer-generated animation in a big way. The movie holds a special (and quirky) spot in pop culture history, and there are passionate fans of its legacy. One of them is Jay West, who has written a series of guest columns on Disneys elaborate promotions for the sequel, Tron: Legacy, which is due out Dec. 17. Tron Night is coming, and Jay is on top of it.
As part of the ramping marketing for Tron: Legacy, a preview Tron Night was held at select IMAX theatres and Digital 3-D theatres. I attended Tron Night at the Universal City IMAX and the vibe from the audience while queued up was one of bottled excitement. Some wore Tron T-shirts and caps and others came in Daft Punk tour t-shirts (the French music duo created the score for theTron sequel and have cited the original 1982 Tron movie as a major creative influence). Disney passed out complimentary glow necklaces and Tron: Legacy posters and a curvy model decked out as a siren program dsitributed Tron swag like light-up caps and some die-cast vehicles.
Steven Lisberger the writer and director of the original Tron movie, and a writer and producer on Tron: Legacy was on hand to introduce the footage. Lisberger jovially addressed the audience by saying: Well its great to see all this neon you guys look amazing. Lisberger said 1982 audiences werent ready for many aspects of Tron: Parents had never been to a Disney movie where they couldnt understand the story. It left 10-year-olds saying, If parents dont get it then this is for me! and added: I thought the movie would be a revolution, but people dont change that quickly. People leave the theatre and go on about their lives. It takes a generation to really make change happen.
Ive put together a video report on the event that includes an excerpt of Lisbergers introduction and a brief interview with him after the screening, as well as reaction to the preview footage by some of the attendees. A couple of scenes from the movie that were shown are also included: When Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) first meets Quorra (Olivia Wilde), and when Sam is reunited with his father, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges). Theres also a video for Daft Punks Derezzed track which includes a montage of imagery from the movie. Thanks to Hero Complex for a chance to be a guest fan correspondent and share this Tron moment.
the movement doesnt get better you just got used to it.Y'know what - I just rewatched the new trailer and Clu.v2's mouth actually seemed better on repeated viewings.
As I've said before, the face and the hair was absolutely perfect to me. So now that the mouth is looking better - I'm definately 100%![]()

Man, did they find the lead actor from the Hayden Christensen school of acting? I've never seen so many male actors in recent years land big lead roles simply because they're good looking. It's mind boggling.
I don't know, his acting in the 7 mins of footage had better acting than Christensen displayed in the Star Wars prequels and Jumper.Man, did they find the lead actor from the Hayden Christensen school of acting? Flynn lives, all right, but hes awfully elusive. One of the toughest movies to get your hands on right now is Tron. Not Tron: Legacy, the breathlessly promoted movie due in theaters Dec. 17, but the original 1982 saga starring Jeff Bridges as hacker Kevin Flynn, which has gone out of print on DVD.
Director Steven Lisberger recently remastered the film, color correcting it and reframing certain shots for a planned Blu-ray edition. But Disney hasnt yet set a release date for Lisbergers new version, and as the studios marketing for Tron: Legacy has become ubiquitous, interest in the original is outstripping supply.
Theyre trying to figure out when the best time is to release it, Lisberger says. I dont think theres anything intentional going on to deprive Tron fans of the new edition.
The last time Tron hit stores was as a two-disc 20th anniversary collectors edition released in 2002.
As fans or would-be fans seek out DVDs of the 1982 Tron, they have to be willing to open their wallets. In August, copies of Tron were still available on Ebay for under $20. Now used DVDs are being auctioned for more three times that amount. Netflix lists Tron as availability unknown, only two of Blockbusters 30 L.A.-area stores had copies in stock this week, iTunes doesnt offer the title and even specialty stores that pride themselves on stocking obscure used DVDs are empty-handed. Weve been fielding several requests a week for Tron, says Matthew Messbarger, a clerk in the movie department at Los Angeles Amoeba Music. I just sort of assumed they would have a new version out by now.
Studios rarely miss an opportunity to capitalize on interest in one of their catalog titles. In 2009, Lionsgate released a remaster of Terminator 2: Judgment Day the same week Warner Bros. opened the franchise reboot Terminator: Salvation in theaters, and in 2004 20th Century Fox unveiled a Star Wars box set eight months before the release of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
Tron was a much more modest success than those films, however, earning $33 million at the box office and becoming a cult favorite for its groundbreaking use of CG effects and prescient story about computer culture. Today, its effects might look quaint to sophisticated audiences.
Disney has declined to say when the studio will release a new edition of Tron, but its possible the company is deliberately holding back on printing new copies of a movie that could alienate the broad, non-geek audiences theyll need to make Tron: Legacy a success. [Update: Disney now says Lisberger's remastered version of "Tron" will be available sometime in 2011.]
That film was ahead of its time, says Jan Saxton, analyst at Adams Media Research. But they want the focus to be on their new effort.
