Deadline Hollywood and most industry insiders.

Well I work in the industry too, and frankly if someone was talking Avatar numbers they were either BSing people trying to talk the movie into a better position, or they were just plain stupid.

It looked destined to perform like any mid-year blockbuster. It scored low against that benchmark as well, but no way was it ever going to be the next Avatar.

TRON: Legacy was released the exact same weekend as Avatar was last year.

With the added addition of earthquakes, floods, and blizzards. Oh well. Better luck next time Disney!

Saw this two weeks ago and forgot to post my thoughts, which is strange, cause I really liked the movie. I had a lot, a lot of fun. I was kinda surprised, as I figured with all the negative reports, it would mostly be an unenjoyable, mindless action film. I guess one can call it mindless action to an extent, but for me, it actually had some heart to it. I didn't really have any problems with Hedlund, and I actually found myself invested in his relationship with Flynn. There was a bit of substance there, and it was enough I think to make me at least care about their reunion and subsequent separation. I loved Quorra too. She was a fun character to watch, and the ending with her experiencing the sun was fairly touching. I really liked that. It also helps that Olivia Wilde was freakin beautiful as all hell in the movie. I was never a huge fan of hers (haven't seen enough of her work to be honest) but I think I might become one after this. :)

On a purely audio-visual level...wow. I saw it in IMAX 3D, and while the 3D wasn't particularly existent, the IMAX presentation was frackin awesome. I was kinda shocked that the fact that a large portion of the film took up the entire IMAX screen hasn't been talked about too much. That was pretty revolutionary when TDK did it, and Legacy used it fairly frequently when in the Grid. In conjunction with the awesome production design and popping colors, I found this to be one of the more immersive theater experiences I've had in a while.

And Daft Punk. A-W-E-S-O-M-E! This was probably the first time I've ever gone into a movie after already listening to the score countless times, and that in no way ruined the experience. In some ways, I think it added to it. I'd be lying if I said that there weren't any times when I was bopping my head or tapping my feet during the film. The fight in Castor's club set to 'Derezzed,' and then transitioning into 'The Fall' when Flynn lands on the dance floor... F YEAH! Wanted to pump my fist in the air. LOL. One of my fave sequences of events (in terms of strictly audio and visual collaboration) of the year.

Anyhow, I can certainly understand the complaints about the film, but I dunno, somehow I ended up really enjoying it, and I really want to make an effort to catch it in IMAX again before it leaves. It was just a really cool and fun experience.

glad you liked it

Yeah bro, when I first noticed a scene taking up the full screen, I was kinda shocked, seeing as I had no idea that was going to happen prior to seeing the film. What a pleasant surprise, especially considering that it was actually used quite a lot throughout the movie. Definitely added to the already immersive and beautiful environment. Like I said, I'd love to catch it again in IMAX, if only for the experience. It also doesn't help that I listen to the score everyday, constantly making me crave a return trip to the Grid. :woot:

BTW, for the sake of the census, I've actually never seen the original (I know, I know...I'll catch it eventually). So, mark me down as a member of the GA who really had no investment in the franchise prior to Legacy, but really enjoyed the sequel.

yeah my first time seeing the original was years ago and I had to rewatch it before Legacy came out. Granted the first film came out years ago and it didnt age as well but the elements of the first film was very interesting. After hearing that Joseph Kosinski wanted to stay true to what the original had intended my expectations was on the level of the first Tron film. By doing that, I really loved Legacy for what it was.

And yeah I can't stop listening to the soundtrack, Daft Punk really should be recognized during the award season (sucks that they didnt get a golden globe nod)

Y'know, you make a good point - that's something that hasnt really been touched upon on here as far as I'm aware. Speaking from experience, I myself had to cancel my opening day tickets because cinema's in parts of the U.K. were either closed or inaccessable because of the unpresidented extreme cold weather.

I know that die-hards probably went to see the movie balatedly but how many casual movie-goers missed out on seeing it when it first came out and have just not got round to actually seeing it (if they actually do now at all)?

A lot of people may just be waiting to see it at home now.

Sucks for Disney - as knowledgable as they are, even they cant control the weather.

I don't understand the negativity for the film, honestly. I really enjoyed the flick. Was it slow paced? Yes. And you know what? That's why I liked it...I didn't want this to be one action sequences after another. It was a great story that flowed well and I felt a connection for the characters. Even for Clu and Flynn. You could see that Clu was frustrated...he thought he was doing what he was created for...and his creator basically tells him he's wrong, therefore Clu's purpose, his entire reason for being is wrong.

It was a beautiful film, story and in appearance.

The music is spectacular. I get addicted to a new track everyday. XD

Lately I can't get enough of "Recognizer". That music is do damn epic and the greatest musical number to get us reintroduced to the Grid.

The sense of elation is tremendous.

Or so Papa Walt would like you to believe. MUWHAHAHAHA!

I can't believe that was one of the complaint. That breathing room allowed us to have a moment to let the Grid sink in.

Also any complaints about the action scenes go out the window with this movie. They outdid themselves with their depth of fields utilizing the 3D and the steady shots were a welcome relief.

This is a CGI extensive movie but didn't use the vomit/headache inducing camera work that a lot of movies go with now. Kosinski maintained integrity to his scenes by doing this and wasn't afraid to put in the work to make sure the CGI was in top form for his filming technique.

While some directors let the CGI guide their camerawork which is a completely wrong way to look at things. IMO

The music really was the best part of the movie. And yeah, I wish that Daft Punk could get some recognition for it come Oscars. I mean, come on, Three Six Mafia won Best Song once! :funny:

I really hope the international numbers and the eventual Blu-Ray/DVD/ITunes sales are strong enough to merit a sequel. I'm dying to see The Wrath of Dillinger.

i am sure it is, and since as others have said toy sales are doing great, and we have the cartoon prequel series coming soon. Disney is more then likely going to do another one.

Not a bad film, good ikshun at hart but too much emulashun or sorry emulation of like minded color schematics... hence underwhelming/flopping box office.

HAHA.

I had forgotten all about that. As soon as you brought that up all I could remember is laughing my ass off. Not at Three Six Mafia because they were just being who they were but the audiences reaction to the entire acceptance ceremony.

Biggest moment of awkward confusion from an audience at the oscars ever (for a few actors here and there).

It was worth the lawls for a show that has basically gone to the dumps. Make the best of it I say.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this probably had my favorite musical score of the year. It has no chance whatsoever to be nominated, but it should be. It adds so much more depth to the movie and gives it an epic, nostalgic feeling of the kind of ponderous sci-fi that was made 30 years ago. I loved the music in this movie.

Overall I really liked this movie. Visually in was extremely engaging, the score is defintiely good and it was pretty fun. I couldn't ask for more.

Mine are:

1. Inception
2. TRON: Legacy
3. Black Swan (yes, nearly half of it is from Swan Lake...and that only makes it more exceptional)
4. True Grit (same goes for the hymns in this)
5. The Social Network

However, TSN will clearly win the Oscar in my estimation.

The Oscar for Best Score? I could be wrong, but I believe that score was disqualified since it included some remixes from Trent Reznor's Ghost album. I could be wrong, though, but I seem to remember reading that not too long ago.
