That article gave me a headache. Why does this writer feel like he has to defend another reviewer? Did poor Simon Larkin get his feelings hurt?
He published a review that people didn't agree with. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm not saying the EuroGamer reviewer isn't entitled to his opinion, but if he puts it out there that means it will get a reaction and be scrutinized.
That Giant Bomb piece is one of the most pretentious pieces of garbage I have ever read. It was hot garbage.
That being said, I think game scores especially out of 10 are a little ridiculous and people put way too much emphasis on them.
Now that being said, I do think the EuroGamer reviewer is entitled to his opinion but I found his review style to be way too flowery and over the top. The review didn't sound like an 8 out of 10 review honestly. It sounded more like a 6 or 7 rating but the reviewer was too scared to rate it lower probably at the fear of his own life. If he feels that strongly about how repetitive and "shallow" the game is, he should stand by his guns and give a rating that actually reflects how he feels and it didn't read like an 8/10.
Like in the review he points out that the game points you toward "trigger points" and where to go, how is that different than millions of other classic games as well when there is only one way to go? Just because Uncharted does it and sort of reinvents it doesn't mean this is bad and he's in denial of plenty other high rated games that also do this.
For me, part of my appeal in Uncharted is the linear style and that you are sort of playing through this classic adventure movie and it's captured that in a way I don't think any game has done before.
His basic complaint sounds like he's ticked off that there isn't enough freedom of movement and a gigantic open world or sandbox which is what sounds like really wanted. To me that's not Uncharted. Uncharted is not about open world gaming. And there is more to action games than just getting a big open world/sandbox to play around in.
Anyway, Giant Bomb gets two thumbs down from me from writing the most ridiculous WHITE KNIGHT editorial I've ever seen.
