Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

Yeah, I've said it before, but here, the gun fights actually felt necessary. In the past, it felt like there were gun fights for the sake of having gun fights. The only issue is, there weren't enough puzzles to balance things out so it felt like most of what you spent your time doing was swinging, climbing or sliding.

I love the little trials puzzles. Makes me think of The Goonies.

Yeah I'm fine with the amount of gun battles and the lack of never ending waves of enemies, but there was a severe lack of epic action set pieces apart from the regular battles the franchise is known for. Had they given us another set piece like the jeep section and some actual puzzles, I think it might have improved the score for me.

I kinda wonder if this is a game where the reactions right away are highly positive, but will dampen once time passes.

I'd give the story stuff a hard 10/10, but when I think about the gameplay, which let's be honest, Uncharted was never great at, I do feel like the rope swing and the sliding were nice additions, but ultimately there wasn't as much to do. Although I did love the stealth mechanics, even though it made things feel a bit too easy at times.

It's hard for me to say this was the best game, because the end really knocks it out the park. But I also didn't feel as blown away as I did with Uncharted 2. But I'm torn because I don't want to make it sound like this was a bad game.

I highly doubt thoughts on this go down after a while. It didn't with TLOU and had a better time with this. I'm not sure why people say Uncharteds game play was never "that good." isn't that a matter of perspective? I have loads of fun when I play it.. That's all that matters to me.

I dunno.. This is just the perfect "action adventure" game for me. Could it have had some bigger action scenes? I guess.. But it's not a make or break for me.

I know people love Uncharted 2..but I honestly rank that 3rd on my list... And it had massive action sequences.

Same here man I enjoy the Uncharted series gameplay. And I really like what they've done on this game with the swinging, sliding and the stealth. Like Darth said earlier in the thread, this game is the love child of Uncharted 2 and TLOU. Or just the Uncharted series in general. It's a perfect blend.

Ben what do you rank number 1 in just the trilogy, not counting 4. U3? I honestly really love 3.

3 is probably my favorite if I'm not counting 4.

If I am..

4
3
2
1
GA.

All great. Some are just improved on.

Nice, I haven't finished 4 yet. But so far it's feeling like it's gonna be my favorite for sure. Which would make it for me

4,2,3,1. I actually think 2&3 are tied for me when I think about it. So 4,2/3,1. I never played GA.

It's all incredibly close, but it's 1 and 2 tied for first, then 4 and 3 for me.

When I rank them.. I don't mean any of them are bad.. I just feel that I've grown more happy with the series with each new installment.

I just finished chapter 16. This game is crushing my soul with the feels. :funny:

Among Thieves
Drake's Deception
Drake's Fortune

Before this one, Among Thieves was easily the best. Right now A Thief's End is ahead, but I have to finish of course.

Theres elements in every game that deserves it to be ranked as the best. It's one of the finest series ever created, in any medium.

No it won't. Great, well developed games don't do that. Once this gen comes to a close, this will be one of those titles talked about in terms of defining that console generation. Just as the previous games did last gen. This series has been stellar from day one and it just kept getting better.

After recently playing 3, it's ranking has definitely gone up in my book. I guess what it all comes down to is that I loved the Elena/Chloe arc much more than I did the Nate/Sully stuff.

U3 definitely raised the stakes and bar in terms of the action, and it was probably much more stronger in the emotional area, since you had scenes like the Drake/Elena Return scene, where so much was said about their relationship without anything being said, as well as Sully finally calling Drake out for always being a smartass and making him be serious for a moment. Those were some of the strongest moments in a long list of strong character moments in the series, prior to U4.

But there's just something about U2 that resonates with me more though.

And as for the gameplay, they never really innovated on much throughout the franchise. U3 was a nice step forward because they introduced some melee and stealth aspects, but they were very simplified. And overall that's how I feel about the franchise as a whole in that area. They adapted certain aspects of several games and combined them in a way that felt new, while also using the performance by the actors and the set pieces to create a complete experience. Again, it's not to say that any of these games are worse of because of it, but rather that of all the factors that go into the games, I feel like the gameplay as a whole is the least impressive.

I guess what I feel like my view right now is that in 6 months, I won't considering it the best in the series, but it will be the best 4th game in a franchise.

Emotionally it is so good, and it would be hard to rank the last 5 ND games based on emotional peak because they all hit high marks. But I just don't know if I will be on that emotional high in 6 months. And this is actually a big reason why I don't want to jump right back in and platinum this. Much like I'm doing with The Last of Us Remastered, I want to take some time and wait until I can jump back in completely and get lost in it all once again, because I want both to feel fresh again in my mind.

Well, because it's...not really? I mean, I guess there's nothing hugely bad about it per say, but the shooting is shallow and basic, enemies have no real variety, the melee is wonky and mostly useless, the platforming is brain-dead, and the puzzles are mixed ranging from fun to similarly brain-dead.

It's enjoyable to satisfy going from point A to B, but if you stripped away the technical wonder and storytelling, and had any of the games stand purely on its gameplay alone, do you think it'd get the same reaction it has? Some may try to say it would, but I highly doubt it would at all. The game's strength's have always leaned on its strong storytelling (especially considering the poor quality of most game's storytelling) and its amazing technical boundary pushing.

As far as my rank goes:

Among Theives
A Thief's End (so far, not finished yet)
Drake's Deception

Drake's Fortune

I haven't played Golden Abyss, but I have a hard time believing it's not at least as good as the first one, though.

There is nothing "best" about the first game. It is down right mediocre outside of the characters.

And one of the finest series ever created, in any medium? Calm down. :funny:

That is something that happens quite often. The poor storytelling in games leads to people losing their minds with some half decent work in that department. But I have to say, A Thief's End is truly great in that regard imo. Almost Bioshock Infinite good, which is my gold standard.

As to gameplay, I feel like they finally nailed it here. The shooting is majestic. The only problem is there is just a little too much space between battles in a few spots in the game.

Here's something I really love that adds a lot.

I'm on chapter 14. I stopped while exploring Libertalia to sit and have an optional conversation with Sam. You can either end it or keep the conversation going by choosing what to say. It was a really nice moment between the brothers. I kept the convo going, just little things like that really are awesome. They took the optional conversation stuff from TLOU and just went a bit further with it, love it.

I still haven't finished it. There was a real dull stretch from about Chapter 4-12, but once it finally picked up I've become really into it. The overall writing and dialogue are quite good, for sure.

I don't know, it's been awhile since I played the last games, but the shooting doesn't seem hugely different to me. I would still say overall it's very basic and shallow, though I still have fun with it.

One part, without spoilers, is there's a section of the game where you have the option to kill no one and totally sneak past the enemies without any confrontation at all. I loved that. I was hoping that would be an indication that more sections like as the game went on, but so far there hasn't been.

I haven't really found there to be "dull" stretches. I myself like the breather in between, it's a nice change of pace. Flows well enough for me at least.

I posted this on reddit earlier; figured you all might get a laugh. This happened to me yesterday. I'm surprised/impressed that Drake isn't reaching through Sam to hold the ledge; he is literally hanging on Sam.

Nah I agree with him. I get more enjoyment out of the Uncharted series than most films anymore. I *do* think it's in the top five... He'll maybe top two.. Of my favorite game series. This and Mass Effect.
