Superman Returns Vague History - merged

Isn't the Donner Cut the one to be released later this year with the other Special Edition Reeve Films?

It's a re-release of SII that will include some Donner footage not in the theatrical release, but Donner is not involved.

That is the plan.

Well, in order to keep them alive Singer could've added them somewhere in the script. There could've added something like this:

JIMMY: Hello Mrs. Lane.

LOIS: Hi, Jimmy.

JIMMY: (looking at Lois' monitor sees a picture of the Phantom Zone criminals led by the police to a van): What are you working on?

LOIS: Just a follow up story of the Metropolis Attacks from XX year.

JIMMY: What's the latest?

LOIS: After the criminals were detained by the police, they were handed over to the military authorities. They're whereabouts are unknown but unconfirmed sources say they might've been transfered to a maximum security facility over at Cadmus Labs.

PERRY (Barks): LOIS!!! In my office. NOW!!

LOIS: I'll be right back. (Leaves)

Not a bad way to do it, I think they could also just put it in a newspaper on the wall, as they have the one with Superman missing.

I really DON'T want Zod in the sequal. Give me Braniac, Metallo, Doomsday...just not a freakin' REHASH.

Amen. Zod is played out. He isnt even that core of a Superman rogue anyways. There are alot more that are more central than him.

I have seen that part of the Donner cut when Lex and the 3 villains are taken away by Police.

It was featured on the extended version of Superman II, aired on Canadian television in the mid 80s.

Why all the hate for Zod all of a sudden?

He, Ursa and Non are three of the best villains to be put on screen IMO.

While the three arent mentioned in SR, Im sure they wont be denied either, it'll be one of those left up to the viewer to decide on bits.

Don't think we will see ZOD in the movie or the sequel especially since ZOD is coming to :supes:mallville...

I pray everyday that we don't have to deal with Zod again, he already got one movie. I'll kill myself if he is a villain in any of the movies.

Good to see I'm not alone when it comes to my Zod opinion. I mean, how freakin' AWSOME would it be if in the sequel, Luthor teams up with Braniac, and together (using alien technology) they create Metallo. Then, after he is defeated, we end with a cliffhanger of Luthor & Braniac's latest plan, as we see the blueprints for their new destructive creation. A being of pure, solid mass.

Luthor calls it Project: DOOMSDAY.

No one has seen the Donner cut as it really doesn't exist.
There is surviving footage that he shot and there is a shooting script, but there is no existing film to see.

Well I have a copy on DVD that i bought off Ebay, maybe not Dooner but many of his scenes re-jigged with a totally different ending and love scene in FOS.

That would be the Restored International Cut I presume? I have that too. Very interesting version of the film. You do see Zod and Co. get carted off to wherever...the Arctic Police Dept. I imagine.

Zod and his always wanting dudes to kneel before him should work out well in prison.:)

It is the ABC TV version aired in the 80's...............I just did some rearch and found it on the net and cross referenced my Ebay account.

Alternate Versions for
Superman II (1980)
Some versions show a young boy in the small town get killed by Zod as he rides away for help.

Another version shows Superman destroying his fortress of solitude after he's trapped Zod inside.

In the ABC TV version, Superman passes a Concorde jet on his way to Paris. This is not in the video release.

An even longer version of the film was aired in Northern Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Australia in the 1980s, featuring these deleted scenes:
A scene of a young woman watching a football game, only to see it be interrupted by a newsflash involving the three Kryptonian villains' attack on the small town, causing her to call the TV station and attempt to get them to put the football game back on;
A scene of a young Japanese girl viewing the villains' destruction of the small town on TV, followed by her father telling her that she shouldn't watch it due to excessive violence, causing her to reply, "Shut up!";
An longer version of the scene of Zod using a machine gun in the White House, where Zod kills a young black secret service agent, then fires at a portrait of Richard Nixon;
A longer version of the scene of Clark and Lois traveling by car in the snow before they go to the diner and meet the bully.

Richard Donner originally shot an opening with Lois Lane drawing glasses onto a picture of Superman, revealing his alter ego Clark Kent. And Lois calls this to Clark's attention by throwing herself out a window. Superman of course saves her, but unseen, so she has no proof. Donner also shot a scene where Lois shoots at Clark with blanks. This is when she realizes it's Superman. This can be semi-seen in the screen tests on the Superman DVD.

The ABC television version originally contained 17 minutes of footage that had been cut from the theatrical release, much of it remnants of Richard Donner's scenes he originally shot before Richard Lester became director, while others are alternate scenes involving Lex Luthor in prison and the Fortress of Solitude. Also, the network version has an alternate ending where Lex Luthor is arrested and taken away by the Arctic Police (and, if you look closely, the three Phantom Zone villains are also arrested and taken away!), thus explaining Luthor's appearance in "Superman IV".
At the end of the film Clark Kent bumps into a large bald guy, which reminds him to go to the diner to face the obnoxious trucker who beat him up earlier
Superman destroys his Fortress of Solitude.
The Phantom Zone villains land outside the Fortress of Solitude with Lex Luthor and Lois Lane, trying to figure out how to get in!
Extended scenes of the three Kryptonians invasion of the White House, with Zod using a gun and Non frightening a dog.
Superman cooks souffle using his heat vision, during dinner with Lois.
Extended discussion between Zod and Ursa on the moon.
The three Kryptonian villains are arrested in the TV version.

The Canadian version has scenes not in the ABC version:
A little girl watching the destruction of East Houston by the Kryptonians on TV.
Longer conversation between Lois and Superman after he destroys the Fortress of Solitude.
Lex Luthor taking Perry White's coffee during the Times Square battle.
Lex and Eve Teschmacher admiring the Fortress of Solitude.
Lex's negotiating with Superman after they leave the fortress is longer.

Superman is chased over the Metropolis river and city by Non in a far more exciting and action packed scene (which is abbreviated in theatrical version). During this chase General Zod can be heard shouting "Kill him, kill him!". The scene ends when Superman goes around a building at a sharp angle, Non follows him but chips off a huge piece of the building, scene then flows into the theatrical version, with Superman looking behind to see Non, with General Zod saying in the background "Come on kill him."
General Zod says to Lex Luthor during the flight to Superman's Fortress. Zod: "I trust, you do not waste my time, Lex Luthor!" Lex Luthor: "Of course not, your turbulance!"

That is what I have.

No mention of 3 outlaws at all, then. Not even a news report.

Hmmm.

Well it is 7 years after that. So Singer confirms its a sequel. But I thought only "haters" said that?

Not really, it's always been a sequel, Singer even said it months ago. He was asked if it was Superman 3 and responded with a "Yes". Not a surprise from my point of view.

All because Zod etc aren't mentioned doesn't mean it didn't happen in the SRverse. To which is probobly did. Why mention it when it's supposed to be in line with those 2 anyway.

I dont see why they'd need to mention it anyways. What do you expect.

SUPERMAN: Hey Lois, remember that time I fought Zod and those guys?

LOIS: Yeah, that was neat.

Vague history means vague history. If you want Superman to have fought Zod in this continuity, there's nothing to prevent that from having happened. It probably just won't be mentioned. The whole idea is that SUperman HAD a history similar to SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE prior to SUPERMAN RETURNS (or for that matter, most of the comic book stories). He fought Lex, defeated him, fell in love with Lois, etc. It's really not that hard to understand.

Yeah, Guard, God gave them eyes but they cannot see, or, even worse, refuse to see...

It's really not even that important. It'll become apparent when the movie is seen.

I thought that the reason he seeked out Krypton was to see if there WERE any other survivors because he always assumed he was the only one. Then he saw Non, Ursa, and Zod and began to question whether or not he was right.

-R

I think the DP headline about a planet (planet pieces?) being found is where it'll come from. Especially if Earth scientists can't tell it's broken up (I have no idea of the scientific validity of that idea). He might possibly even think Jor-El just got it wrong. But thinking there may be survivoros on the remnants of the planet probably makes more sense.

And so were denied those fans who still claim it's not a sequel.

Is he saying they are ignoring the fact Superman faced Zod, Non and Ursa?

No.

What he is saying is that that element will NOT be mentioned in Superman Returns.

It probably did happen in Superman Returns continuity...it just wont be discussed...there's no reason for it to be.

In the set report interview with the script writers, they said the first twenty minutes of the movie would unfold in a way that no one would expect and in those 20 minutes they would explain the premise of the movie and the vague history that we speculate so much about. These are not the exact words they used, but I think this is what they wanted to hit at in response to a question on the same lines. So, lets wait and watch, I am sure they will clear whatever needs to be as long as it is relevant for this movie.
