Yes, this "teaser" is better than most actual film trailers. It's genious, for the fans of the comics, they are saying "SWEET!" because they know what they are seeing on screen and how it relates to the comics.

The non-comic fans are saying "SWEET!" because it wets their whistle, and they don't know what to expect.

As for them not knowing why his costumes black, it's pretty clear when they show the symbiote goo, melding to Peter's costume. They may not know what it is, but they are probably keen enough to figure out it relates to some monster in the comics.

I simply must agree with you Truthteller, I have a feeling that this is going to be the best one yet. I was thrilled to see the teaser trailer, an overwhelming feeling washed over me, just like for the first two films.

Saw the trailer and a few things came to mind:
• I didn't get the goosebump feeling that the teaser for "2" made me feel.
• Would a casual "movie only" fan be confused? The whole inner conflict-Venom thing may be too much for the casual fan, and this, being their first exposure to the third movie might turn them off. At least part 2 was very understandable: One villian - Dr. Octopus. Venom is a fairly new enemy, not as familiar with Doc Ock.
• Are we headed down the Batman “Too many villains” path???
• Also, not to be sexist, but casual female fans that want to see where the romance between Peter and Mary Jane goes might be left out of the trailer too. If you remember, part 2's trailer started with Peter and Mary Jane talking about their relationship.
• I showed the trailer to both my brother and my Dad who are huge fans of the MOVIE but not the comic books. They both had the same response: "Why is he black?" I explained it to them and they both went, "Oh." Not good.

Hey, I'm VERY excited about the new movie - but I also read the comics and am familiar with Venom. Being in the entertainment business, I just worry that this movie might lose the casual fan with all of its complexities. I hope I'm wrong on this one!

I'll say this, The trailer is good. It looks very dark . It reminds me of the graphic art of the 1980's . Very bladerunner . It doesn't look like either of the other films to me. Actually it reminds me of Tim Burton's Batman from 1989.

I'm not as confident in the plot however. I think they have the enough elements for a good film with out Gwen , Captin Stacey,Sandman's family, Venom and the 4th villian. I do think it's gonna make a ton of money though .

This is just the first of what will be several different teaser trailers between now and may 2007 folks, no need to get worked up. This first trailer was brilliantly well done. It served its purpose.

I don't think people are going to be very confused. Though Venom has been around only a short time, he is quite possibly Spider-man's most popular villan. Even the people who have never read Spider-man or watched the cartoons know who Venom is why I describe him. He's pretty well known.
