Voltron: The Movie

A 300-esq Voltron film? That'd be a very cool route.

Makes me think of this picture:

Oh by the way everyone, I made a little Voltron blogger dedicated to the movie, it's in my signature feel free to check it out.

going this route makes little sense for the script. And judging from the synopsis they are going with the ridiculous premise.

This is going to be a terrible movie.

300 worked for 300 because that was the style of the graphic novel really. It doesn't translate to Voltron, not even this half-baked version of Voltron they are doing.

It's hilarious to me filmmakers think they can copy what one film did well and that's all it needs to be a success.

Making it like 300 ignores why 300 worked and why it was good.

Untilteld:

Just FYI, in the script Fox apparently liked:

-Hunk is a middle-aged Arab man.

-Lance is a black guy in his 30's.

-Pidge is a 10 year old Japanese boy that doesn't know English.
this grinds my gears. :cmad:

I've never heard of him before, but I'm interested to see how he handles the material.

Me thinks this movie will go down Speed Racer style.

Speed Racer was one of the most epic movies I've seen, you haven't seen it so don't judge me! :cmad::o

i've seen speed racer and the best part of it was the middle where there was an offroad race and a few fight scenes. The worst part was the hotwheels tracks, that were never in the cartoon.

Interesting choice for a director. I have been hanging out to watch One Last Dance for a long time but haven't been able to find a copy anywhere to rent.

Never heard of this guy, hopefully he can bring justice to Voltron.

They're talking about the method, not the style, I think.

From imdb for the movie Casshern:

One of several films around the world that was produced almost entirely on a "digital backlot" (i.e. shot with the actors in front of blue/green-screens with all backgrounds added in post-production, a technique which has been used for TV, video and video game production for many years). Although which movie was shot first is debated, the other movies (released in 2004-05) include: Immortel (ad vitam) (2004), Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), and Sin City (2005).

All four of those movies, you can see, have distinct visual styles, but what they all have in common with 300 is the use of digital backlot technology.

But one thing they do have in common is that they all take place in futuristic landscapes or city-scapes that don't exist in the past or present. 300 was the exception; it took place largely outdoors. So one could argue that 300 was the least suited for an adaptation that was largely set in settings that could readily be found in real life. It was the execution that made it stand out. Unless of course, you can show me a quote where filmmakers say they're going to use the actual visual look of 300, they I take that back.

I have to agree with ya and I've been thinking the same thing. Every movie that comes out has to be different and creative. Sure they're going to use the same cheap visuals like 300 but this is Voltron!!! It has the potential to be a gigantic roaring movie!! but nooooo. If I have to say, "gee, this movie looks like 300" I'm walking out on the movie regardless if I paid full price

I'm not really looking forward to Voltron right now. For one thing, the script is nothing like the cartoon from which I know. I've never read the comic books (didn't even know there were any) so can't say anything from that point of view.

Whoever is putting this movie together really needs to rethink what they're doing.

I got to be honest, Casshern does nothing for me. Had some interesting visuals, but that's it. And it's nothing like the original story at all.

I've read this script, and I know what's coming. It's not good.

They are Wing Commandering this movie basically. You can't make something like VOLTRON on a moderate budget. That's like saying, oh let's make Transformers for $60 million and use lots of green screen like that other production 300!

This is not the Voltron we know and love. The script is terrible. The premise and characters are terrible. The dialogue is terrible. I mean it makes sense they got this director who is hardly doing anything right now to do this project. A guy who is not exactly in high demand and hasn't actually done a movie in three years. He's going to be their fall guy.

Hasn't Hollywood gotten the message that movies like this most faithful to their source material are more successful? Movies like 300!

i'm just excited that they're making a Voltron movie. heck i would've been happy if it was a CG movie like Toy Story.

I feel like a broken record:

Fox acquires property rights to a cool comic book, sci-fi novel, or sci-fi cartoon.

Fox doesn't do anything with the rights for an extended period of time(examples (X-Men, Dragon Ball Z, Watchmen))

Once the project finally gets started Fox's lawyers force the hired writers to make drastic changes to the source material.

Fox decides to underfund the project.

Fox hires an inexperienced or hack director.

The end result is 90 minute incoherent mess that only a few people with short attention spans could enjoy.

Awesome pic, never seen it before. I hope that's the kind of tone they are going for in this "post-apocolyptic" film...It could even be a tad edgier looking.

That's what I'm saying. Either way works for me. For the longest time I always had a feeling it was going to be CG, and I thought that was the only way it could be done without looking horrible. But, with TF and how great that worked out, I have full faith in this project now.:woot:

Let's not get carried away with all this stylized 300 artsy fartsy ****....it's ****ing VOLTRON, not Of Mice and Men.

Oh boy, I've been reading some of the script, it is not good. :down

That's like saying the Resident Evil movies are acceptable just because we are getting Resident Evil movies.

So the script is "out there" somewhere? You're the first to mention it, all the stuff I've read has been based on the review.

What's bad about it so far??

I read the script like a year ago after El Mayimbe posted that stooge script review for the Latino Review site.

It's a horrible script and I will answer any questions about it.

Keith in this script is more like one of Jason Statham's schlocky interchangeable action characters like from DEATH RACE than the Keith we know.

Voltron does not appear at all until about the last 5 pages, and its utterly disapointing.

What I dislike the most about the script, OK Voltron is Voltron. I mean these days, watching Voltron, the show doesn't hold up very well. But I mean none of the cool nostalgic things you like about Voltron are in it.

They've totally ruined the characters and put them through the meat grinder. It definitely feels like this is a script done after horrendous notes by Tom Rothman.

"Ok let's see no aliens, no outer space civilizations, no royal aliens trying to take over everything. It's got to be on planet earth, ONLY planet earth. OK they need to be more like Han Solo and Princess Leia, and there can't be more than one type of evil monster because audiences its bad enough we have one giant robot in this thing."

Damn, now I see why you guys say it's so bad.

Ok, so Voltron not showing up til late. What's the deal with that? Are they searching for him the entire movie?? Or what? Dare I ask about the Princess?

And VileOne, feel free to give up as much info as you want to me. I don't mind be spoiled at this point. Who knows, we may see changes once production starts.

Well going by the synopsis for the production, it sounds exactly the same as the Justin Marks draft I read. So its the same general BS storyline. Bizarro, it will be easier to me to answer the questions if you give me a better idea of what you want to know.

For Voltron:

Here's the deal. A group of human resistance fighters led by Princess Allura are building the Lionbots in a secret bunker in Mexico. Allura and her middle-aged, Arabian bodyguard Hunk have been searching everywhere looking for the keys to the lionbots. You see even though the Lionbots are built from scratch according to hieroglyphics an ancient prophecy dictates that they need the interstellar keys in order to make them form together to make the Voltron robot.

So in the post apocalyptic world sometime after a Drule Empire invasion that's devastated earth, Allura and Hunk are looking for the lost keys. They are able to find the last key in the FUBAR'ed NYC where Keith and Lance live. They get Keith and Lance to transport them to Mexico and that's basically most of the movie right there.

On Princess Allura:

Apparently she's an alien that came to earth from outerspace. She and one of her close confidantes (forget his name it's been about a year since I read it) go to earth in order to warn the people of earth about the Drule invasion. BUT OH NOEZ! No one believes them! She helps with the resistant movement and the building of the new Lionbots. The building is led by Sven Holgerrson who's made out to be a total *****ebag in the script. What they do to Sven is disgraceful.
