Superman Returns Was it really THAT bad?

I prefer the more brief like trunks on my superheroes. But the kind in SR was fine, there are far more things to complain about. The color tone of the red and the lack of yellow S on the cape bothered me much more.

At least Superman was given trunks instead of being deprived of them like Batman has been for about 20 years on film.

Same here. I mean the trunk in SR could've been worse. I do think they could have pick better trunk, but the speedo look is fine. It's not that bad. Better than what Reeve wore.

You know, a lot of my friends said this about SR. For the same amount of running time, they know of a lot of movies that are shorter that had a hell of a lot more story. But one of my friends put it best. Superman Returns is like that "Very special episode" TV thing that they do that really amounts to nothing. That is what SR reminded him of. The afterschool special (if you are old enough to remember those) of Superhero movies.

I saw basically no resemblance. The L&C suit had to be the worst one of all time. Talk about a terrible S on the chest, it was like glue on. And the trunks were too puffy.

I don't see that resemble to it at all. It look quite like Reeve, but a little bit smaller. I would say Cain's trunk is more like brief tightie whitie, while Routh is more of a speedo look.

Those trunks look awful. Seriously, what is that suit made of? Nylon material from k-mart? Good show but I don't imagine the budget was too big.

I'm going to get blasted for this I know it, but:

I really did not think this movie was that bad. In fact, I would easily rate it as the second best Superman film under Superman the Movie.
The plot, while not exactly an action packed story, was sufficient, and I understand how Singer wasn't going for the same action level as we were used to. He wanted to show just as much of Clark dealing with coming back to Earth and dealing with the changes around him as he wanted to show Superman saving the day.
After watching the film for the second time, I really began to get used to Routh as Superman, and I admire his dedication to the role, especially stepping into such big shoes after Christopher Reeve.
Kevin Spacey was perfect as Lex, I can see no problems or complaints whatsoever.
Lois could have been a little stronger but overall she fit really well with the general tone from the original films.

Overall, yes there were some moments where you were expecting a little more, but I generally enjoyed the film and believe it to be an excellent piece.
Now notice, my attitude has changed dramatically since I watched it the second time.

After I watched it the first time I was bashing it for all its worth, but thats because when you come into a movie like that you have certain expectations, from the trailers, from the previous films and from the hype. So watching it the first time very few people get a true sense of the film for what it is. Thats why when you watch it the second time, more often you really come out understanding the film and being able to rate it for what it is.

There are a lot of powerful messages and powerful moments in this film, and it deserves a lot more credit than its given. I really think Bryan Singer did a great job, and even though I wish the costume's colors had been a bit brighter, Superman still shines through any imperfections for me.

I hated Luthor and his plot, Kitty, the henchmen. In a word, i hate Donner`s Luthor.

Thats what bothered me most. The rest i can ignore.

If Luthor was post-crisis in this movie, it would`ve saved it...I get pissed just to think about it...

Brilliant post, and i agree entirely with it, the movie really shines on repeat viewings, and that is were i gained my major love for the movie, despite enjoying a lot first time.

I have said this to a lot of people who have only watched the movie once or twice, but you really need to watch it at least 5 times to truly take in everything the movie has to offer. The powerful moment and messages that you mention Dark Guardian are sometimes hard to spot in 1 or 2 viewings or are sometimes overshadowed by other things in the movie.

I truly find it an astonishing movie that i have managed to watch about 55 times and still not got bored of.

I loved Superman returns and although it has its flaws, I just love everytime I see Superman flying looking so good and that Plane scene is the single most spectacular Superman moment for me ever on screen.

I feel the exact opposite. I thought Spacey was great, just as Hackman before him. Luthor was my favorite part about Superman Returns.

Yes...I think it is sadly on par with Superman III. While Superman III was silly and stupid, SR tried to be smart but was in fact stupid. In the end, they suck equally.

I gave this movie a shot twice in theaters (thinking the 2nd time maybe it is not as bad as I thought), but felt the same. I even gave it a 3rd chance when I got the Ultimate Superman Collection cause I was so hyped for this movie when it was coming out (I said on this very site that I thought it was going to be amazing weeks before I saw it) and wanted to love it, but I just can't even remotely like it.

I gave it a shot, and the result was always the same...I hated it, and couldn't wait for it to end.

As for your 55 times comment, I think the only movie I may have seen that many times is the first Spider-Man (though SM2 is not that far behind). Possibly the original Star Wars trilogy also. I am not sick of those movies yet either.
