Superman Returns Was it really THAT bad?

Don't forget some literary terms. Plagarized. Run-on. Hyperboled. Onomonpiea. Fragmented. Lackluster.

I posted this in another thread in the sequel section, but SR's main theme was the love story between he and Lois. He and Lois are the great lovers. They are soulmates. You got that with Reeve and Kidder as they had screen presence. They were like brother and sister when the camera wasn't rolling, and would never have hooked up in real life, but they had onscreen presence that Routh and Bosworth just didn't have. And that is part of a directors job. I was watching the GHOST dvd and the writer of Ghost said: that "on-screen chemistry is so important" and it really is. I mean that movie was directed by a guy who before hand only did comedy and fart jokes. The writers cried when Paramount told him who his director was. But they worked together through 19 drafts to get the story right, and also the relationship right so that you believed these charactes were soulmates.. You can see it onscreen:

And this is from a guy who directed Airplane. But he had enough sense to know that he needed actors with screen presence and he had both Swayze and Moore do a read through of the scripts top see if it was there to cast Swaze, and it was. He knew he had magic.

Singer did SR so you just assumed they had a relationship and that any old actors can have onscreen chemistry. Their relationship was vapid onscreen. I saw a thing with the both of them on MTV promoting SR and they had more screen chemisty in that then they did in the movie. How was Singer not able to tap into that. He just assumed that people would pick it up from STM and S2, but that was with different actors who had screen presence, even if they were reading the phone book.

Yes, it really is that bad.

Fabman said it best, "Bland. Boring. Slow. Uninspired. Hollow."

I've finally got the right description for 'Superman Returns.' It's simple:

Bland. Boring. Slow. Uninspired. Hollow.

An absolutely hollow 200-million-dollar-toy.

Perfect description for the movie. I was so excited going to see this film and thought it would be impossible for it to be bad. I left stunned from how ... blah it was.

I enjoyed the plane rescue and that was about it. The "grand finale" was pretty weak and they turned Superman into a pretty sad and creepy character.

Pretty cool special effects, but I was expecting much more ...

My perfect explanation would be:

Exhilarating, Action oriented but with a story to tell and a character to develop, very emotional in some scenes's, very uplifting in others.

Overall one of the best Superhero movies ever.

Hi! And yes, SR is a very beautiful and inspiring film, and my favorite superhero film.
I definitely want a sequel. :yay:

Singer/Routh 2010

^Agreed (except about the favourite SH movie bit, SR is close but not quite top), SR is a superb movie that jut gets better and better the more times you watch it.

Welcome to the Hype by the way!

I will try and watch SR today as it is on HBO and I will be taking notes on things I didn’t like along with any thing positive I might come across. Do you guys feel that this thread is the proper place to post my comments?

I'm alright with you posting your thoughts here...

I love Superma Returns. I would put it in my top 5 superhero films.

My own personal opinions aside, I think the discussion on this is truly fascinating. I haven't seen a film since Star Wars with this much fan division on how good or bad it was. Wow! :wow:

right....and the total lack of any OFFICIAL news regarding a sequel only exacerbates the division between the 2 sides.

Instead of discussing facts about the sequel, we are left to continue debating the same arguments ad nauseum for the past 1 and 1/2 years......and if the argument gets kicked out of one thread, we simply move it to another......lol.

I mean.....look at the sequel board section. We're still debating the SR there, since all we have at this point regarding the sequel is mere rumor or speculations.....

The Prequels? 'Cos I never heard of the internet in 1977 (nor did I see the film until later - loved it too). ;)

Isn't that often what the internet is about - rumours. And just occasionally something more substantial. Plus lots of discussions - heated or intellectual or silly. I'll admit I like it when there's the occasional pillow fight. ;) :D

summary of SR = a weak and brainless superman awaiting his daddy; lex luthor to kick his ass. that's the peak and whole point of this movie.
welldone singer!

Superman Returns is Fantastic!! An exciting and complex take on the Man of Steel.

It's the epic of superhero movies IMO.

Summary of SR = extremely weak, boring and uninspiring interpretation of Superman by an arrogant director and a movie thats only well recieved by non Superman fans, sensitive folks, people with bad taste and those whos standards don't meet the high standards needed for a character this legendary.
Superman Returns should have been the movie of the year, a movie to blow Spiderman off the top spot and have kids jumping off their bunk beds.

Wow. That real nice to accuse those who like SR as non-Superman fans. Who the hell made you the boss & give you the right to list those who are Superman fans & those who aren't Superman fans when it come to SR? And we have bad taste because we like something you don't? Learn how to respect other's opinions without calling them what they aren't. You know, you're no different. :whatever:

And I do have a good taste. It just SR is another Superman story as others. Wheter it good or bad.

I saw the movie again after a long while and am glad to say it still holds the goodies it had the first time I saw it. It has heart, brains, action and a story. Filled with many good moments and some little ones that most superhero movies don't have at all, while trying to hard to show explosions and punches.

I even liked Spacey Luthor a lot more than I used to, maybe over Hackman's Lex. And yes, I liked Bosworth and what she did with Lois.

My second favourite Superman movie only after STM.

a movie thats only well recieved by non Superman fans, sensitive folks, people with bad taste and those whos standards don't meet the high standards needed for a character this legendary.

Non Superman fans and sensitive folks? Nothing wrong with that. Believe it or not, sensitivity is a good thing. In fact, what movie makers or any kind of artist should have as the very source of thir creativity.

Another amazing fact. Non Superman fans can be really valuable people in spite of not reading Superman comic books.

But then you conveniently mix or add those with low standard people in your desperation of putting yourself and your personal opinion in the "right" "well accepted" "popular" "politically correct" side.

That does nothing but to expose your lack of valid argumentation.

Superman Returns should have been the movie of the year, a movie to blow Spiderman off the top spot and have kids jumping off their bunk beds.

For once I'm happy that a Superman movie wasn't made as a mere Spiderman BO competition or a reason of excitement for children.

^^Excellent answer, El Payaso!!

I don't see anything wrong with a person being sensitive.

Parents need sensitivity when caring for their children, including men. Otherwise, how are we going to guide and understand our children and their trials and tribulations?!

All the better artists in the world Must be sensitive about the world around them in order to produce the beautiful art they make, whether be painting, music, singing, acting, making movies, sculpting, you name it.

And SR was a labor of love, that's so clear to me. SR is high art disguised as a blockbuster movie. Haha. Goooood, Bryan, I'm glad that for once WB execs were fooled.

I probably haven't been very active in this forum, but I want to go on record and say that Superman Returns is not only one of the best movies since the comicbook movie resurgence with X-Men, but one of the best ever. It's poetic, wonderful, it's a beautiful film. Perfectly balanced, tasteful....Singer handles everything with such elegance and never goes for the hamfisted approach so common in superhero movies. Superman Returns is moving and poignant. Empire magazine gave it five stars and declared it, "The best popular entertainment since Lord of the Rings," and I agree.

I won't even be too put out if there is no sequel. The fact that Superman Returns even got made is still a minor miracle. A sequel to the Reeve movies, and such a good one, such a big budget one, with an actor so similar to Reeve, with the Williams theme....the odds of all those elements coming together at once is unbelievable.

It's like Batman Returns. It's amazing it got made and it's to be treasured.
