The Dark Knight WB to go with new marketing plan

I had no personal affiliation with Heath Ledger. Obviously I'm not heartbroken like many other people on here and he was just an actor to me. The only film i enjoyed of his was Brokeback Mountain. It's sad when anyone dies, but this is just an everyday thing for me. I live in Philadelphia where the murder rate is through the roof and cops are being killed. Now that's something I really care about.

From how I'm taking this Dark Horizons news it sounds like they were planning to change the marketing anyways in March focusing on all characters. To me though I hope they don't just ignore Heath in the marketing, he is still half of the movie and one of the main pillars of it. I think in respect to Heath it should be shown. But I understand on toning some of it down maybe.

So a trailer in March, though that makes me happy to hear, still clouded in Heath's tragic death is very sad.

Interesting advice from Wall Street Journal on the Matter:

"The Dark Knight" is basically a big-budget movie with tragedy now attached to it, it would be unwise to change the marketing strategy or campaign at this point. "The best thing that could happen is that all this marketing stuff just goes on and the movie and the campaign don't turn into some kind of weird grave marker," he said.

cant believe this lasted 7 pages. Anyways, i think if the wb reworks it, they should have us helping out batman, he could give us clues... kinda like what they were doing with the joker....

I think the WB was thinking of changing the VC game plan well before Heath's Death.

Harsh... but true. Whenever I see those types of sigs, I get all :whatever: . As if 'Mr' Nolan (love that smug, condescending 'Mr') is gonna click on it and go 'ZOMG! dats the batsuitz i've been luking 4! thruodo FTW!'
Rant over. Man, I'm tetchy today.

From Latino Review:

LR:
In regards to Christopher doing only 3 Batman films, with Two Face as the villain for the 3rd movie. I said I know Harvey Dent is in The Dark Knight, but is Two-Face? And would he be the main villain in the third film? (Charles looked at me like he wanted to slit my throat.)

TDK Producer Charles Roven:
"I just told you about my film making philosophy, Chris Nolan is so much of that, even more than I am. He is such a focused guy that he really only thinks about one thing at a time. Hes editing right now. You know, we're all very sad about what happened, but you know, right now, other than a pause to think about and give honor to Heath, we're gonna go forward and just finish the movie."

i doubt the family would feel any different in a year than 6 months. We're talking about all of this in the context of Heath dying 2 days ago so of course it all feels close to the bone now, but 6 months is a long time.
It is. We're all still emotionally caught up in this. We all need some time to get some perspective. WB shouldn't make any rash decisions about this movie, aside from the immediate marketing situation.

His family could choose not to watch it, but I think they should, if it's his last performance.

Thanks for the info.

A lot of people deal with loss by just working. Honor the person, but you can't stop your own life. Nolan has a job to do, and now he has an extra responsibility, since this film will be a huge part of Heath's legacy. He'll honor him by making the best movie he can.

More of the same info from CNN:

Ledger's death puts last films in a bind

(CNN) -- Before he died, Heath Ledger had two films in production: "The Dark Knight," the latest chapter in the Batman saga, and "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," the latest film from director Terry Gilliam

Ledger's death has affected both of them in different ways.

The actor, who died Tuesday of unknown causes at age 28, had finished filming "The Dark Knight" late last year. It's due to be released in July. But marketing of the film, currently in post-production, has been thrown into turmoil, the trade paper Variety notes.

The early push for the film has focused on Ledger's villainous Joker character, including a poster with a shrouded Joker scrawling "Why So Serious?" in blood on misty glass.

The film's studio, Warner Bros., recently restructured its marketing department, Variety reports, after the departure of the executive who helped create the "Dark Knight" campaign. (Warner Bros., like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.)

The trade paper speculates that the marketing campaign will be changed abruptly.

The studio put out a statement Tuesday saying it was "stunned and devastated" by the news of Ledger's death. "The entertainment community has lost an enormous talent. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person. Our hearts go out to his family and friends," the statement said.

With the Joker, Ledger was taking on a role that Jack Nicholson had rendered indelibly in 1989's "Batman." But "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan said the actor had more than measured up to Nicholson. "To be perfectly honest ... what he's doing is indescribable. He's figured it out," Nolan told the crowd at an August comic book convention in Chicago.

The role as arch villain The Joker disturbed Ledger, according to The Associated Press. He called the character a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy."

Although unusual, Ledger's death does not mark the first time a major star has died while a film has been in production.

TDK will be out in July. It's the marketing that is the only thing that might change, but the film is well into post-production now, Heath's part was done and dusted, so that's not an issue. It's the Terry Gilliam film that's really going to suffer.

The only issue is possible voice-over stuff that wasn't finished. And while Ledger's voice is fairly unique in this, there are many talented voice-actors who can imitate that and get a close enough impression if needed.

I think it'd be more respectful to just stick to their guns and go ahead with everything exactly as planned. It's not the same, obviously, but it reminds me of how post-9/11 movies scrambled to erase the WTC from everything (including that classic Spider-Man teaser); it's more jarring to me than if they'd just leave things alone.

Nah from rumblings and it seems to be true that he was 100% done, not only filming but sound dubbing as well. Because now they are just doing editing. So apperently Heath was done with the film.

I agree with this as well.

But I wonder how this will translate as far other things go such as the video game and what not. They could just borrow dialogue from the film I'm sure.

With some video games they don't use the real actors, some they do. If there is a game to be released they will use some one else I'm sure.
