I just think it's funny that all these so-called experts who've been dissing Superman Returns are the same ones who said MI3 and Code would be blockbuster hits. Well, MI3 made money, but fell far short of what people expected, and Ron Howard's Code, with its stinging Cannes preview, will prob. lead to disappointing figures, and X3 next week will likely drop it off the top pretty quickly.
And let's not forget all the dark clouds over X3. Sci-Fi Mag recently ran a piece suggesting Ratner may need mutant powers to make X3 a hit, and there've been plenty of set reports expressing concern over FOX's rushed timeline and greater attention to meeting deadlines rather than making the best possible movie.
Bottom line: EVERY big summer movie this year is coming in with a good dose of negativity and skepticism. It's unfair to pin it moreso on one title than any other. If we have to analyze this, I think a lot of us would agree that SR has just as good a set of circumstances around it (Singer, Williams score, Donner's blessing, unknown Reeve-looking lead, Spacey) as any other summer film. Everyone likes to hear about the problems and the conflicts, and I'm not saying we shouldn't speculate, but I think we all need to acknowledge that all of us, Superman fans or not, should be pleased with the way this film was developed and be thankful that despite all the missteps and omenous decisions, the people who eventually laid and directed the road are some of the best ones we could get.
So, let's speculate, but I think it's unfair to suggest SR has any more chance of flopping than any other summer film at this point.
