What do you think of Ron Paul?

You agree that illegal immigration is a problem. But you are against a sure way cut the incentive to sneak in here in the first place??

How can you get rid of the illegal if they can have "anchor babies"?

This is the only thing that Ron Paul has said that makes any sense. If your parents are illegal, you should be illegal too. This law has been exploited for too long!

I concur, I agree with his getting rid of the "US citizenship by birth and parents able to stay" stance. Like you said, it's been exploited far too long. It's just a loophole immigrants use to stay over here. His idea to end the IRS is intriguing to say the least. I am starting to like this guy.

You'd be surprised how long a visa can last. I have friends who migrated here during infancy, and had to apply for citizenship sometime during their high school senior year. Imagine being born here, and having to do that.

Those are the breaks. They still should not get automatic citizenship just because they were born here. This is a privilege, not a piece of candy to be casually given away.

Just because illegals abuse birthright citizenship, that doesn't mean we should eliminate it outright. It just has to be reworked.

That is more than enough reason to get rid of it. We have over 12 million illegals here now! And most of them have had babies over here! So tell me when enough is enough.....

Why cut off an arm when you can perform surgery to fix it?

Demolishing birthright citizenship is unfair to the US-born children of legal immigrants. As I was saying, we need to find a way to rework the system, not get rid of it. What if the illegal immigrant parents of US-born children were given a chance for legal status, rather than it simply being handed to them? Like if they came forward with their child, they'd be given the chance to apply for a green card through some sort of test.

If they failed the test, they and their child would be forced to deport back to the parent's home country. They child would retain a kind of inactive citizenship that wouldn't come into effect until the age of 18.

If the parent passed the test, they'd be given temporary residence in the states, until their child's 18th birthday. During that 18-year residential period, they (the parent) could apply for citizenship themselves. If they fail to do so, they'd be given a window of opportunity shortly after the child's 18th birthday to do it before getting deported.

I heard him speak here in Dearborn at the Republican debate 2 weeks ago and he brought down the house. He was the only candidate that completely had the audiences attention and applause. Every time he spoke people cheered, and we were told not to because of time constrains.

I find him somewhat intriguing, but all in all, I just can't bring myself to support him. I disagree with too many of his stances on immigration, foreign relations, and the IRS. There are a ton of vocal Paul supporters at KU, and not a single one can ever come up with a better argument FOR HIM than "look at how stupid such-and-such more famous politician is". It just irritates me that this sort of thing is actually gaining traction.

Bored can you give some specifics on what you disagree with him on as far as the issues you mentioned.

Manic, please correct me if I am wrong but wouldn't children of legal immigrants be eligible for US citizenship. Nobody is arguing whether children of legal immigrants shouldn't be citizens (since their parents are) its whether children of illegal immigrants should be citizens and have access to various social programs within the USA.

You cut off the arm because the infection has spread too far. At 12 million plus illegals, I'd say that's where we are right now! And legal or not, they are not citizens yet! Period.....having those babies is just a fast track for them to stay here.
Get in line with everybody else. If you become a citizen, then your kids are too! It's really pretty simple.

The Legal immigrants he's referring to are those with visas (not yet citizens). They are just over here working or going to school for a limited time. They are here legally. But they are not citizens. He wants the kids of these people to get automatic citizenship and that ain't right either.

I'm a libertarian. Of course I think Ron Paul is the best candidate. But I think the Republicans are going the Neo-Con route with Rudy. However, Paul is getting more and more media time and raising ridiculous amounts of money. He should have been considered a top-tier candidate for the Republican Party a few weeks ago.

We'll, we'll see what happens. Unfortunately, I'll be very surprised his he somehow captures the Republican nomination from Rudy. Surprised, relived, and satisfied.

And this is where we reach Impasse City. I believe that if you're born in the US (mind you, under legal means), you deserve to be a citizen. You disagree. Let's leave it at that.

Thank you for clarifying. I agree with you and I believe that some debate could happen within the government to meet a mid way point (if it must even though I would get rid of birthright citizenship but I don't represent every voice in America) because anything would be better than what we have right now.

Not that I'm an immigration expert, but I know the government was pushing for amnesty for the current illegal immigrants that are living within the USA right now. I'm worried about the strain that would put on the social programs we have set up now. I think that many more people applying for welfare, social security and subsidized medical programs in such a short amount of time would be a very dangerous situation to introduce to the budget of the US.

Drunken Savior, I'd love to get your ideas on the IRS and the Federal Reserve. I think a lot of people aren't aware of the history and effects these two organizations have on our monetary policy. As a Libertarian, I think you could educate a few people on the boards.

Here is the end all be all, if you do what you need to do to gain LEGAL citizenship, like our ancestors in the past, you have all the rights I have here in America. Not from sneaking across the boarder nor on Visas (a sort of back door cheat if you will) do you deserve the same rights my family, who fought in wars for this country, do. Just because you birth a child you can have the valet open the door for you? NO! And neither does the child, your parents aren't citizens, and neither are you. CUT OFF THE ARM BECAUSE IT IS INFECTED WITH GANGREEN!! My children no longer have a schoolyard to play in and it's the same school I went to. Are you serious??? God Bless Ron Paul, I hope he makes it!

Since this is more of a political thread than a celebrity thread, shouldn't it be moved?

As I read in the earlier posts, Justin made the thread in the regular comm. bd. but the mods moved it. I would ask them.

It was probably moved by a mod who didn't know who Ron Paul was.

I say put the words "Libertarian Candidate" into the thread title and put it back in Community.

Wait... you're against immigrants coming into this country on visas? God damn, I give up.

Manic, don't give up the debate just because they (and possibly I) have a different view than you, debate us on it. Thats the problem right now. We don't have a decent diolouge in America going on, without someone getting offended. Bring up some counter points against making birthright citizenship illegal. Don't just give up that (in my opinion) is not the right way to go about it, whether I agree with you or not.

I agree this can be an interesting debate. If there is a way I can do it please tell me and I will make it happen.
