The Hound of the Baskervilles (1988)
TV movie starring the great Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, with Edward Hardwicke as Dr Watson. Co-starring
Kristoffer Tabori as Sir Henry Baskerville, and Ronald Pickup as Barrymore. Strong adaptation, loaded with mist-shrouded atmosphere, and great performances. The Dartmoor locations look fantastic (actually filmed in Derbyshire, in the Peak District). The hound is big and glowing, and that baleful howl across the moors never fails to make you sit-up a little straighter! The whole production exudes class - as was the case with all of Brett's Holmes run. Basil Rathbone's version of HOTB may still my favourite, but this - with (for me) the greatest Holmes of all - comes very close. 8/10
