The Mist

It can't be my horror marathon without The Mist. This was still hauntingly beautiful to watch again for the millionth time in black and white as Frank Darabont intended, this time in 4K. The 4K release does wonders for a lot of the shots that require a lot of shadows and depth of field not to mention the black-and-white version hiding the less-than-stellar cgi shots of the creatures. And while people love to mention how bleak the ending is, I still think they don't give enough love to the story and characters that lead up to that moment. It's such a perfect and horrific portrait of humanity and what it can do in the face of fear.

My favourite Tim Burton movie, a classic, inventive adaption of the legendary dark folktale. Quirky and atmospheric with visuals and dynamic action sequences that stand up well nearly 25 years on.

Prom Night (1980)

Don't think I've seen any of the original four Prom Night movies since they first came out, so I'm rewatching them over this Halloween. This one was actually a fan-edited 'Director's Cut'. It restores several deleted scenes, and removes the subplot about an escaped sex-offender (which wasn't an original part of the story). Jamie Lee Curtis stars as Kim, a high-schooler whose 10 year old sister Robin died tragically years earlier. This year the school prom happens to fall on the sixth anniversary of Robin's death, and someone is hunting down students who were present when it happened. Pros: The performances are good, it's well shot, and it delivers the requisite '80s T&A. Cons: After the atmospheric opening with Robin's death it's an hour before anyone is killed, a couple of kills fall outside the killer's supposed motivation, and it's a bit light on the gore. It's also slow at times compared with later, better-known slashers. Interesting to revisit - but I'll probably give it another forty years before the next watch. 6.5/10

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS (2023) Starring Zachary Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou, Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Taylor, and Rachel Zegler. This was my first time watching....it will be a long time before I watch it again. Surely someone could have figured out how to remove 30-45 minutes from it to speed it up a bit. At around the 45 minute mark my wife said "Is this movie dragging as much for you as it is for me?" Shazam being new to superhero biz was cute in the first movie....but it became annoying in this one. It was nice to see Gal Godot, but she wasn't there long enough to save the movie from being a drag.I would have liked to have seen Shazam go up against Dr. Silvana and Mister Mind (they have a funny cameo).
