Al Pacino is on top form as a worn down, world weary cop with a drinking problem, the way he cuts through the cocky cop facade to show the vulnerability of Frank is really at the centre of this thriller that sees him and a fantastic John Goodman on the trail of a serial killer seemingly using the lonely hearts ads to pick victims. This was also Ellen Barkin's breakout role as she holds her own with Pacino and she does a great job of keeping you uncertain about her character Helen right to the end.
